Glenn Perry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 8, 2001.
'No Trouble at All'

People were always noticing that Glenn Perry was handsome, but he'd just shrug it off. His brothers had a different tactic: "We always told him he wasn't," said his older brother, Frank Perry Jr.

Lieutenant Perry, a 41-year-old city firefighter, had other noticeable qualities. A friend was getting his new house ready, and Lieutenant Perry offered to help him paint. When the friend showed up, he found that Lieutenant Perry had painted the entire house.

He had a small-town sensibility from growing up in a close family of five children. His father, Frank Perry Sr., a retired firefighter, and mother, Catherine, talk in tandem, even on the phone: "He was one big smile," his father said.

"Always laughing," his mother called out in the background.

"Always laughing. He was no trouble, no trouble at all."

In Eltingville, Staten Island, Lieutenant Perry met Peggy Riley; he married her in 1984. "I knew he would be a great dad because of all the attention he paid to my niece and nephews," Peggy Perry wrote in an e-mail message. "Glenn would think nothing of bringing six kids to Shop Rite with him. Glenn loved life."

The couple seemed destined for the sentence-finishing that defines lasting marriages. They had three children: Glenn Jr., Meaghan and Caitlin. "They were a very huggable family," Catherine Perry said.

"Very close," Frank Sr. interjected. "They've got his sense of humor."

"Yes, they've got their father's sense of humor," Catherine Perry added.

Our family visited NYC this past weekend on a sightseeing trip. We had a great time and, of course, visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum. It was very sad and difficult to complete but I would encourage everyone to do so. I saw Lt Glenn Perrys picture in the room with all those who perished on 9/11 and it was extremely solemn, but I felt some closure having seen it.
I continue to wish the very best for his family and know that his memory will never be forgotten. (Dr) Glenn Perry

Last year my wife participated in a stair race up the Duke Energy building in Charlotte honoring the 343 firefighters who lost their lives during 9/11. She wore Lt Glenn Perrys nametag, the same name as her husband! She was so inspired by the event that she joined the organization committee for this year. I attended the event this year with her which was held last Saturday. In short, it was terrific with multiple retired NYC firefighters present and truly heartfelt speeches by family members of victims. She and I wore Lt Glenn Perrys nametag and both of us felt moved to be honoring him. We hope to do it every year so that we never forget.

Yesterday I competed in the Melbourne Firefighter Stairclimb, and in memory of all the fallen firefighters from Australia and from 9/11, every single climber is assigned a fallen firefighter. I was assigned Glen C Perry and i'm honoured to learn about the man that I carried with me today. Even though it's been almost 17 years, his memory will now live with me forever

My wife and son participated in a stair race up the Duke Energy building here in Charlotte today to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in 911. Each participant went into a small room to choose a badge with the name and picture of one of the 343 firefighters. She was helping our son with his badge when she looked up to see Lt Glenn Perry's name on a badge, the same name as her husband! She got chills and was happy to run the race in his honor!
I'm an orthopedic surgeon and have been honored to treat many firefighters during my career. In fact, one of the best scrub techs I've worked with is a firefighter full time and part time scrub tech primarily to work with me.
Well the name now takes on new meaning for me. I certainly extend my condolences to his family and if I can ever be of help, do not hesitate to ask.

I'm from Edinburgh Scotland, I recently done the 9/11 tour whilst I was in nyc and noticed the name Glenn C Perry. I had a sudden need to find out more about this man. I think the main reason was that we share the same last name. My thoughts are with his family.

It Is Sadly That Time Of The Year That I Have To Revisit This Site. Read The Short Story About Lt. Perry, And Thank God That We Were Blessed To Have A Man Like This In Our Lives. But it is not just today tha ti think of those Three Hundred And Forty Three Firefighters. I think of them even in a small way every day. The courage it took to for them to run into those towers that fateful day, to assist the occupants to saftey even when their life whas in danger, adn then to run back into those towers to assist more... It's astonishing. Truly these men were God Sent and real life angels. I am proud to share the same last name as you sir. God Bless you and your family sir! And lastly, Thank You...

I actually did not know Glenn Perry. But I feel like I know him now or at least wish I had known him. The only reason I found out about him was when I looked up my last name on Google and Lieutenant Glenn Perry Ladder 25 popped up. For some reason I clicked on his name and I started to learn about him. Thank God I did. Before then I had no idea what the number 343 even meaned .I knew about 9/11 since my Aunt worked on the 88th floor of the North Tower but luckily was not at work on September 11th.I knew that lot of firefighters had lost their lives that day but I had never actually new any of their names. I mean I am only 14, why would I want to learn more about 9/11. But started to realize how stupid I sounded and how selfish I was not to learn more about it. I sure am glad I did click on his name. I mean to sacrifice your own life, for somebody you don't even know and will probably never see. Man that takes more guts than I will ever have. God Bless This Man and His Family and thank you. I am truly proud to even share the same last name as this true American Hero. God Bless the FDNY but most of all God bless Lt Glenn Perry.

Every Sept. 11th, we have a 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb, in Denver, CO, to honor our fallen brothers from the FDNY. This year I had the honor of carrying Glenn's photo up the 110 stories with me. Although I never had the privledge to meet Glenn, there is no doubt in my mind that he is a TRUE HERO and a great American. He willingly sacrificed his life to save others. Please know that Glenn is not forgotten and his memory will live on. We will NEVER FORGET. God Bless and keep you.

Many people have forgotten the names of the fallen FDNY. Lt has remained with me everyday since early 2002 when I received my memorial bracelet with his name engraved on it. I am honored to wear it everyday. He has kept in it when things got to hot. He has helped me through the days when calls all but wreck me. On September 9th I also be honored by carrying a flag in his memory and placing it during a 9-11 ceremony in Grand Rapids Michigan.

You are never forgotten

To Mrs. Perry, the Perry Children, and Glenn's Parents:

I sit here this Palm Sunday afternoon and read about Glenn in The New York Times material on him. What a courageous and loving man he must have been! He should have let people call him handsome, for that he was. His face also reveals a deep inner faith which he must have passed on to his family and his friends, especially his comrades in the New York Fire Department. I salute his memory and wish for each of you comfort and peace in the joy of Glenn's years with you and his legacy to each of you, as well, I am sure, his presence with you every day of your lives. Bless your soul, my brother in Christ Glenn, and may you rest with Him and eternally partake of His fellowship. Christ died for us, all of us, and Glenn obviously lived with that assurance.

Blessings and Peace to all of you.

Dear Peggy, Children, Mr. & Mrs. Perry, Frank, Barbara, Arlene, and Patrick, and the Reilly family,

Not a day goes by that I don't think of all of you. Growing up with Peggy, one of my fondest memories now is Peggy chasing Glenn around on his bicycle when we were probably in the fifth grade. How sweet you would grow up and marry. I always felt as if Frank was another brother to me, and to know the pain and hurt you all feel makes me so sad. Not a day goes by that I do not think of all of you. May you find comfort in one another. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I know that Glenn is watching down on all of you. God bless each of you and your family. Sincerely,

To The Perry Family,

What do I say to someone I never met, but know they were wonderful, caring, self sacrificing and their memory deserves to be cherished? I am sorry? Thank You? God Bless You?

All these things and more need to be said for you, Glenn and everyone whoe perished on September 11.

Just the fact that you were a firefighter expresses what was inside your heart. You were a Hero on earth and now you are an Angel in Heaven.

I truly believe the sky was so beautiful, brilliant, and blue on the tragic day...it was to make your passage to Heaven, Glenn, peaceful and swift. Because you were an officer, I have no doubt you were leading the other Angels, who perished on that day, in an orderly fashion into Heaven to live with God.

God Bless you, Glenn and the loved ones who were left behind to carry on without you.

I am so sorry for their loss.

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

In my school each person could get a necklace engraved with the initials of a firefighter who died in the World Trade Towers. I got Lt. Perry as my firefighter and I wear the necklace with his initials and the date 9-11-01 everyday. It makes me think of the brave people like Lt. Perry who are in America. I live in Dallas and am in the 6th grade.
