Michael Boccardi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 15, 2001.
Loyal Scout
Taking more than a dozen 15-year-old Boy Scouts to the wilds of New Mexico for a 10- day trip on horseback might not sound like the ideal trip for some people, but it was for Michael A. Boccardi. "It was a once in a lifetime thing," said his friend Ed Maselli, an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 40 in Mount Vernon, N.Y., which Mr. Boccardi led as scoutmaster. "Snakes, bears, the whole nine yards. He loved it."

Mr. Boccardi, 30, worked as a senior vice president of institutional relations at Fred Alger Management.

Scouting captured Mr. Boccardi's imagination from the age of 10; he had been an Eagle Scout himself. A typical month might include 20 nights devoted to various activities and events, according to the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Scouting was on his mind on the morning of Sept. 11. From his office, he sent an e-mail message to a mother of one of the boys just before 9 a.m. It was the troop's revised newsletter.

I can’t believe it’s 20 years ! I was at the memorial of his life with my husband who was a good friend of his. Unfortunately my husband died on December 4, 2002 after a long , difficult illness that could have been prevented. I am thinking of Mike and hope he and Steve are together in heaven.

I am sure the ripple effects of your teaching in the Scouts is making a positive impact on our world. I am praying for Michael's friends and family. Much love from Texas,

Hello,
I got your sons name from my church in 2001. Everyone got to pick a person and family to pray for after the attack and I have had it in my possession since that time. I keep it in my drawer at work and say a prayer when I see it in the drawer. I wont ever throw it away. When I leave this office I will make sure the next person keeps it to say a prayer too.

Respectfully,
Laura

Dear Mr. Boccardi,
you have never met me, and i only came to know of you because of a school project about the fallen heros of 9/11. However there is one thing we do share a great deal in common, our love for Boy Scouts. Upon reading how involved you were for your troop and your accomplishment of Eagle, I really do wish we had met. I hope you rest peacefully in heaven, surrounded by generations of scouts.

To The Family,
I did not know Mr. Boccardi but in reading the obituary he obviously was a man who spent quality time with teenagers. In being a scoutmaster, Mr. Boccardi has to be commended for showing younger ones that they matter and are loved also. No doubt, all of these younger ones will remember him favorably.

Sincerely,
Mr. Terry of NC

For part of our opening ceremony today, our SPL wanted something special for this anniversary.

He read The New York Times article "MICHAEL A. BOCCARDI, A Loyal Scout".

At the end of it another Scout read "9:03 a.m.: A second hijacked airliner, United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston, crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center and explodes."

Scout leader & Eagle Scout Michael Boccardi.

We say with our hearts "You are gone but not forgotten and we will not forget the horror that took you away"

my son is new to the tiger scout experience and its thanks to people like you who give of themselves to these young boys so they can become great men like you. a loss of life like yours is unthinkable and to your family we give our sympathy and thanks for you and all you did while you were here.

With deepest sympathy, I salute a unique man who was so dedicatd to the Scouting movement. All of us who were touched by Michael, are certainly better because the high standard he set by "raising the bar" and showing us we could achieve that goal. May God bless his soul, his family, and all of those who now feel a part of them is missing. May we be comforted with the memories Michael has left for us.

Michael Boccardi was my scoutmaster and friend for 6 years. My memories are fond ones. No matter what I am doing, being it in school, play or scouting, I know that Michael is looking over my shoulder and making sure that I stay on the right track.

Mike entered our lives when our oldest son Chris joined Troop 40, eventually followed by our youngest son Matthew. Our family's relationship with him went far beyond scouting. He was a mentor to our children, and a great friend to my husband Ron (also an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 40). Each day holds a memory of Mike, no matter how simple, no matter subtle... he is always there, and will forver be sorely missed.

Michael and I went to college together at the Cooper Union. I'll never forget camping and road tripping to Atlantic City with him and friends - Michael loved his scout techie toys, he was a lot of fun. He had a wonderful, joyous heart.

We are very sorry for your loss of Michael. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 40 in Mt.Vernon,N.Y., Mike's Troop. Having known Mike since we were both youth and having had the wonderful opportunity to work with him as an adult scouter, I can say that he is missed each and every day. Mike was truly a great man with a wonderful gift of leadership and organization. There are not many people with the ability, desire, dedication, or willingness to do what he did for countless youth throughout his years as a scout leader. Mike will be missed in Scouting but never forgotten.

Mike & I were good friends at Alger. We both shared the love of watching the cartoon "Southpark" and I would tape them and have him watch them. He was always so busy with his traveling that whenever he could he would borrow my tapes and watch them with his friends. I will miss him and all my other friends & co-workers at Alger who were losted in the WTC tragedy. I pray for them & their families.
