Katie McCloskey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2001.
Simply Awesome
Even in grade school in South Bend, Ind., Katie Marie McCloskey and Cherese Djakiewicz were best friends, and somewhere along the way — maybe it was at Indiana University together — they both began sharing a dream: to move to New York City. And so, when Cherese moved to Manhattan a couple of years ago, it was inevitable that Katie would follow. It took a while, but Katie finally arrived to share Cherese's apartment three months ago. Six weeks ago Katie found a job on the 97th floor of 1 World Trade Center, staffing the computer help desk of Directfit Inc., rushing to the aid of employees.

Now her sisters, Leslie and Julie, her brother, Noah, and her father, Richard, are in Manhattan searching for her. The other night, they discovered Katie's journal in Cherese's apartment. "She wrote `I made it!' and that she loved it in New York," said her mother, Anne. Actually, Katie's exact words were that she had found "an awesome job in an awesome place in an awesome city."

I worked at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana at the time her father came in to design her beautiful memorial. Katie was my age. Every 9/11 I think of her, and her awesome family who lost a beautiful young woman that day. Her memory is one of the heart strings that helped me make a huge relocation to Austin, Tx 12 years ago. So to Katie and her beautiful family, SHE IS REMEMBERED and I thank her. I thank you

Although we hadn't met, I bought your flag and card at the Healing Field in Tempe, AZ. It was in 2009 after I had moved from southwestern Michigan. I sent the card to your dad but I flew the flag in my yard for two entire years. In 2011, I went to the Healing Fields to get a replacement flag. I think of you often when someone mentions 9/11.

My daughter entering West Point was emotional with the memorial and Katie Marie stood out. She's will forever be in our hearts from here on.

Katie: Each year on this day, I celebrate your life. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to know you and work with you. You had the wonderful gift of being able to make people laugh with your great sense of humor. Just hearing you laugh would make others want to laugh right along with you! I recall that you always seemed to have a free-spirited outlook on life. You are in heaven now where you are eternally at peace. I miss you.

To the McCloskey Family:
I met Katie when she worked at Lilly in Indianapolis. I had lunch with her and a cicle of friends several times. I remember her smile and bubbley personality. Her long brown hair was shiny and beautiful. I remember thinking, "What an attractive bright young woman!" I hope that the memories of your precious Katie help give you comfort.

A Message to Leslie in Memory of your sister, Katie. I work at Clay High School and at 9:00 am this morning all of the South Bend Public Schools had a moment of silence in remembrance of 9-11. A lot of us do not know anyone personally and even though we never knew Katie, I have come to know your family after my husband Pastor Greg married you and Erich. I made a neat desktop background picture with a small profile of Katie and remembrance of 9-11. Myself and some of my co-workers had this on our computers during our moment of silence. It helped us to connect not only to Katie and your family but to all those who suffered loss. You and your family were in our thoughts and prayers today.

I had the wonderful joy of meeting Katie one day for lunch. I was having lunch with my friend Chad and she came along. I never knew that I would only be in the midst of her wonderful grace only one time. People come in and out of our lives for a reason - sometimes only for an hour or so. She is an angel in heaven now, watching over all of us. Praying for peace and praying for our great nation.

To My Smiley Face Katie,

Every time I saw you, your smiley face made my day. One of the best things I remember about you was up at Indian Lake when I caught you and your friend sitting on the pier and I asked you what the heck you were doing here a the cottage w/out my permission. Your eyes were as big as baseballs, you said you were so sorry for coming to the lake with out your permission. You said you would leave right away with your friend and never do it again. I thought you were going to cry and I said I was just kidding and than we hugged and kissed. I miss you everyday and I pray for you everyday.

Miss you so much.

Your good old,

Uncle Ralph

Katie,

I am your 1st cousin once removed, and I just found out about losing you last year. I haven't been in touch with your Dad ( who is one of my favorite cousins) in way too many years. I promise you, I will take way better care to keep in touch with our family and to always let them know how much they are loved even though we are many miles apart.

To the McCloskey Family,

One of the priests from my parish attended the 9/11 ceremonies in New York last weekend. He brought back an American flag with the names of all the victims printed on it. The flag hangs outside the entrance to our church. After mass he asked us to please pause and visually take a name from the flag, and then pray for that person's family. My eyes focused on Katie's name. I feel God picked Katie for me. I have and will continue to pray for her and you. From what I have read she was a wonderful daughter and friend. May her spirit live on in all of you.

God bless.

To the McCloskey Family,

I remember your family, especially Katie and Noah (swim team), growing up in McKinley Terrace in South Bend. I remember Katie as a very sweet, compassionate, positive and enthusiastic girl...never a negative moment or comment. I can't remember the last time I saw her because of our age difference, but I knew she was destined to have a great life. She wasn't a glass half-full girl, she was a glass spilling-over girl!

I work in the Pentagon and was there on September 11th, and lost 40 co-workers from my agency that day. Despite the emotional toll of caring for the survivors and their families here, the biggest blow for me came when I came across Katie's picture on the CNN tribute site.

I want you to know I can only hope to raise my son as well as you have raised your family. Katie personified what a good person should be.

God bless your family, and take care of yourselves.

Thankyou to everyone that has signed this guest book. Katie would be amazed at all the people who remember her. She is a very special person. She touched the lives of everyone she met. I miss her and love her every day of my life. She was not only my sister, but my best friend. I was so lucky to have her in my life. Even though she was only here physically for the first year and a half of my son Logan's life, he will always be reminded of how much his Aunt Katie loves him. He is 3 1/2 now and says that Aunt Katie lives in heaven now with all the angels and watches him to make sure he is safe. We love you very much and miss you everyday of our lives.

Although I only remember Katie as a little girl, I still remember her. When I used to play with Leslie and Noah, Katie was the kid in the high chair.

On September 11th, 2001, our baby sitter Jennifer Goode, who had a heart condition, died that day at home. I had thought how hard it would be to know someone in the Towers, because I knew the pain of our loss that day, too.

So sad to hear Katie was missing. Even sadder to find that she did not make it out. I know, however, that she has many friends in heaven. I'm sure our friend, Jennifer is one of them.

Take care and God Bless,

Our prayers are with your family always.

I met Katie in our freshman year at Adams. I remember that Katie always had a smile on her face. She lit up the room when she walked in. Katie was such a postive person all through high-school, such a joy to be around.

It has been 2 years since Katie has been gone, and not a day goes by with out a prayer for her and the McCloskey family. Katie will always remain in my heart. I was blessed to have known her. May God continue to bless everyone who has been touched by Katie's friendship and love.

Dick,Anne,Leslie,Noah & Julie - As I was checking my email this morning, this was forwarded to me by Annie. When I talked to her last night she said she was feeling very sad throughout the day. Dear Family & Friends of Katie,

What a tremendous outpouring of love and remembrance to your lovely daughter in this Guest Book. Thank you for sharing her life with the rest of us.

The memories of those who knew and loved her brought tears to my eyes, and in a way, it made me feel I knew Katie, too.

Her light will shine through the lives of those she touched. She lived her life to the fullest.

God bless all of you who had such a tremendous influence in her life and so much love for this dear child of God.

To Katie's Family and Friends:

Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. I think of Katie and how lucky I am to have had the pleasure of working with her here at Bank One, and it saddens me that I did not take the opportunity to get to know her better.

She was, and still is, one of the most beautiful, caring and thoughtful people I have ever met. I have the utmost respect and admiration for her. She was always happy, always smiling and always laughing, especially with Chad.

I often thought she was an angel here on earth, now I believe she is an angel in heaven, watching over all of us. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and in my prayers.

God's Blessings Always,

Dear Katie and your family! I have not met any of you, or even heard your names before today, but I know you must have been a great person

Katie. See I am in high school and today during our theology classes we were all given braclets that are neon orange that have the name of someone who passed away due to 9-11 on them, ya know the kind you cant take off unless you cut them off, well anyway we were told to ware them for a full week and let it remind us of what happend that day and how many great people were taken away. Like I said I didnt know you this morning, but I will pray for you tonight!

Dear Katie...we met when I was a 7th grader at Edison Middle here in SB. Julie and I were friends and we used to hang out at your house all the time. Julie and I used to visit you in Bloomington and you always showed us such a great time. I was inspired by you Kate...So I decided to attent IUB because of the experiences I had with you there. When I was a freshmen, I chose McNutt because you lived there. I always looked up to you so much because you were always so kind, generous and special, you brightened peoples lives! When I was freshman, you'd come to my dorm and get me to go out and have a good time. We always had so much fun. When I was a sophmore and I had problems with my roomates, and you would always lend a kind ear and let me crash at your pad. Thank you for being my stability in one of the hardest times in my life. I never got to say Thank you! But then you moved to Indy, then to NY and we didn't get to see each other like we did. I am glad I had the oppertunity to become closer to you during my years in Bloomington. I thank god every day that I knew you, because you were there for me when I needed you. You were a wonderful friend. I will never forget you Katie...all my love Bre.

April 30, 2002

Katie,

I remember our very first day in orientation at Bank One. The room was very quiet and I didn’t know a soul there. You whispered “Pssss Chad, Hi! I’m Katie. I’ll be working with you at the helpdesk!” Talk about a huge welcoming smile, it made the day so much easier to get through. You ended up being my mentor and taught me the ropes there at Bank One. When they announced that we were moving our offices to Fishers, we both immediately went to Lorey (our boss) and asked if we could sit next to each other and we wanted windows seats. Of course we got them too! Hehe

We both ended up leaving Bank One in February of 2000 and became contractors here at Lilly. From day one we knew they wouldn’t let us sit together because they thought we would be laughing and getting in trouble, instead we were less productive because we had to log off the phone to go to the other end of the room to laugh and goof off! Katie, once we started here, you became my very best friend. We would go to lunch together every day and even out together on the weekends.

I knew your life long dream was to live in New York and your New Years resolution for 2001 was to move there by the end of the year. I went and opened a savings account and made you give me money to put in every month. When you came to me and told me you had enough to move, I was so happy for you, but at the same time so sad that you were going to move away. You promised you would keep in touch and come see me. And of course you did. I talked to you everyday or every other day. It was just like you were here. I confided everything in you and vice versa. I knew you were always there for me and you would have done anything for me. I’ve never had a friend like that before and I never will be able to replace you. There was always something about you Katie; you made me smile more than anyone ever could. You still make me smile everyday knowing that you are looking down over me.

I love you and miss you more than you can imagine!

Love always,
Chad

As a teacher at Katie's school, I knew Leslie and Noah better, but I have vivid memories of little Katie holding her mom's hand, wearing her little saddle shoes. Dear Katie Closkey,

I want you to know that a day doesn't go by that I don't think of you. I love you with my whole heart and soul. You knew that and I knew how much you loved me. I am very glad we had that wonderful talk on the boat in the Bahamas that day instead of diving! What fun we had laughing so much. My memories of you are many and each one makes me smile and cry at that same time. I love you forever KC.

We are extremely sorry for your loss of Katie. May her life and love continue living through all who love her. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I cannot find the words to describe the loss that I feel. I do know, however, that I do celebrate the time that we had, and will continue to have. I am lucky to have been touched by such a wonderful, beautiful person. I miss you Marie...
