James Maounis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
A Friend for a Lifetime
How many guys would blow off drinking with their pals in order to drive their sister to the beauty parlor? ("You got a brother?" asked Anthony Giammona. "Would he do that for you?")

Mr. Giammona's friend James Maounis would. "He'd take his sister out to dinner," he said, adding that the Maounis clan — two brothers, one sister, the parents — were "more like friends than a family unit."

In the same vein, Mr. Maounis, Mr. Giammona and their friend Ralph Baione were a lot like family. As teenagers growing up in Gravesend, Brooklyn, in the 1970's, they went to discothèques together; as adults, they biked, traveled, got haircuts and met women together. They even shared a nickname: Way.

"You're out and you're amongst others, if you give out a 'Waaaaay,' it alerts the people in our group," Mr. Giammona said.

Mr. Maounis, 42, was an account administrator at Fiduciary Trust on the 90th floor of 2 World Trade Center; his sister Mary Jane worked in the same building on the 62nd floor. She survived.

Hi Jimmy,
You may not remember me but I surely remember you and your brother Billy when you washed and waxed your car shiny and clean. In the 70s I lived on East 5th around the corner from you, I used to ride my ten speed bike past your house and down Neck Road. Even though you didn't know me you gave a smile. I was very sad and upset when I read your name........I went to Lincoln, my sister met your brother Billy at the pork store. I am the older sister, she was to young to remember, but I shared my memories with het. RIP...Amen

As I sit here teary eyed and read all these wonderful things said about you I am very proud you are so remembered and loved. Your Mom is my first Cousin and I am your Great Aunt Lena's son and I know my Mom is with you because we have such a beautiful family and as I read I know you are making her laugh also as you did your co-workers and everyone you came in contact with. Thank You for being YOU

September 16, 2011

I went to Jimmy's memorial mass in Brooklyn and all these young twenties year old women where there including myself and one of his coworkers asked me why did all the young girls from the company. Jimmy was handsome and friendly and use to talk us all the time. His father had the same good looks and wink at me and all the other young girls and I laughed. It was like father like son with the Italian heritage. Jimmy came over to my department to show the guys the ring he bought for his soon to be wife. He seemed excited. Jimmy was fun, kind spirited and full of life. One thing Jimmy was is he acknowledge people no matter who they where and made them fell welcome he was a true person who could have a great conversation with Rita Blau who passed always said that. See you on the other side Jimmy!

Jimmy,
I never really know what to say when I think about Jimmy and his family. It's been a long time since my family lived next to his in Brooklyn but I have many fond memories. Nick and Connie hosting my family near the holidays and Nick and Jimmy treating me to my first Martini around their bar. Jimmy coming and going in his shiny black Mitsubishi Galant. His beautiful eyes and his disarming smile. He had a good heart and always stopped to talk to me although I was much younger than him. What I remember most is the bond the Maounis family had and I can't imagine what they have been through these last ten years. Please know that your son and brother was a wonderful human being and we will always remember him.

I think of you often. You were the sweetest guy at Fiduciary. I had alot of laughs working with you. You were a breath of fresh air that is hard to come by. I am sure there is a perfect place for you in heaven. I know you are still laughing and making people feel good about themselves. You are very loved and very missed :( Love to your family especially your parents. They should feel so proud that they raised a son who touched so many lives just by being himself. I will always have fond memories of you.

Not even two weeks before that terrible day we all were at bistro in SI celebrating birthdays and you came by to join us. we only knew each other for a short period of time and i knew you were and stand up guy. i was visiting a friend of mine in SI and met your brother Billy who was my friend tommys' next door neighbor. i see your brother in stores in si and at the dance school shows they throw each year. my deep felt sympathy to your family. i know that your are at rest in the arms of Jesus Christ and one day we will see each other again and i will hear a big tom o. my God bless your family even more than he is now because we know that you are next to him. i am truly sorry it took so long to write this tribute

I realize much time has occurred since the tragedy of September 11. By chance I recently picked up my high school year book and looked through the pages and faces of my yesteryear. There were good times and bad times. Some of us were "wiseguys" bigtime and others were what I would call "standouts". Albeit Mayo was not tight with me as I was in a differencet circle we at times would meet and click. He was a standout, classy guy always willing to help and give a good word. I learned of his passing by googling his name. That was a sad day for me.
He is at peace now and clearly will not be forgotten. Please allow me to pass on my condolences to his family, albeit it is somewhat late.God Bless.

Jimmy,
As the sixth year passes I can't tell you how many jobs and people I have come across in my lifetime. You took the effort and personality to stand out at Fiduciary Trust. You made people's days and lives by your charm and personality to go out your way to be friendly and nice to people. I will always remember your kindness towards others. I know your watching over us. My Dearest Brother, Jimmy,

I haven't been able to write until now..words never seemed to express the overwhelming feeling of loss and heartache..now at this sixth year..

As I read all the beautiful tributes sent to you, my dear brother, I am truly proud of you. You had a magical gift..you were a wonderful and very kind person. So many loved and admired you..you touched their hearts and souls..they will never forget you. I am blessed that you are my brother and blessed for the time I had you in my life. I feel your presence in whatever I do..you are my angel on my shoulder. I thank you with all my heart for always being there for me whenever I needed you..I remember that each and every day and I am very grateful. I cherish and treasure the time we had together. You were one-of-a-kind, very unique. Our family is heartbroken without you..there is a hole in each of our hearts and nothing will ever be the same again..a light has gone out of our lives. We miss you more than words can express. Loving memories of you live in our hearts forever.

I love you,
Until We Meet Again Dear Brother,
Your Sister

Just wanted to say hi and that I was thinking about you. Its so funny because even though it was five years ago the pain is still that same as the day that it happened. The pain never seems to subside for me. I think about you all the time Jimmy. I miss you and those gorgeous eyes.

September 27, 2004

Nothing was the same after 9/11. The world changed that day. I still can't believe how many of you died from Fiduciary. I no longer work for the company when asked to put down the address I think 2 World Trade Center but how can I write that. I think about the people, friends, coworkers that where a big part of my daily life. I don't think I will ever meet people like I met in Fiduciary. The company changed and everything else changed that day. You where a great person who always called for the prices and I always and the others answered the phone.

I knew you saved others that day up on the floors for some reason I was not on 90th floor that day. I have very happy memories of you and may your family know that you where a person very liked in the company that made the working day fun because we had a individual like you in the world. God Bless Jimmy never forgotten.

Well Jimmy it's the third year that your gone and I feel as if it were the first. Some people say that the pain will subside. But for me it never does. I went to church today and prayed for all of you. I heard the song. "On eagles wings" and remembered they played that at your memorial service. You are in my mind everyday and I will never forget you. I miss those beautiful eyes. I know your in heaven watching over us. We love you and miss you. Fiduciary will never forget you.

James,

I will never forget the day we met in Paradise Island, Bahamas 8 yrs ago. Your dark tan with your blue sparkling eyes. That was the best vacation I ever had. We kept in touch, went out together had good times. When I mentioned I love blueberry pie you told me about a great bakery near your home and the next day I had a pie with yellow roses. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family who you always spoke highly of.

I met Jimmy my first day at Fiduciary while working in the Pricing Department also on the 90th floor. Jimmy would come everyday to chat with the guys and check his stocks on Bloomberg. He always had something funny to say and made his co-workers laugh with that twinkle in his eye. Jimmy Fiduciary did not

only lose a employee, but a special individual who filled our day with laughter and smiles. We miss you Jimmy, we miss your smiles, and myself I miss your jokes.

Jimmy...I know I wrote to you already back in November but I can't seem to get over your loss. My heart goes out to your parents from Bradenton, that you always spoke so highly of. You meant alot to us at work and we talk about you often. So charming you were, always giving compliments to everyone. Those eyes that I can't seem to forget, were breathtaking. Even when I was upset over something minor, you always cheered me up. We use to always talk about going to Greece one day and meeting up there . I know someday, somewhere well see eachother, and then I can finally smile again.

It has taken several months for me to sit down and write to you and your family because, frankly, I haven't felt like I had the right words. I received a Mercy Band for my 25th birthday on March 26 and your name is on it. I opened this gift, given to me by a close friend, and immediately felt the most overwhelming peace. I am blessed forever to have a new guardian angel in you, even though our earthly lives never crossed paths. I will wear your name on my wrist and your life will be praised with each compliment I receive for the bracelet and a prayer will be sent to your family every time that I think of it. Thank you for being you and for being a hero to your country. May God continue to bless you and all who have known you and may your family find the peace that I found when your name came into my life. I will forever sing your praises.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
