Robert Mattson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
A Hero in 1993

Robert D. Mattson did not seek out danger. But danger seemed to have a way of finding him. A lot of his friends managed to avoid Vietnam. He ended up over there in the Army, smack in the middle of harm's way, came home with a Bronze Star for valor and some memories he would never share, not even with his wife, Elizabeth. "He would just slough it off as not worth talking about whenever I asked," she said.

Then, in 1993, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center the first time, with a truck bomb, Mr. Mattson, a banker with Fiduciary Trust Company International, found himself in harm's way again. One of his co-workers in the stricken tower was eight and a half months pregnant, unable to make her way down 96 flights of stairs to the street after the elevators stopped. He was one of a handful of people who helped carry her up more than a dozen flights to the roof, where a helicopter plucked her to safety.

On Sept. 11, when the trade center was attacked again, Mr. Mattson called Mrs. Mattson on his cellphone a few minutes after the first plane had struck and told her not to worry, he was in no danger, the plane had hit the other tower. But just to be on the safe side, he said, he was leaving his building and, in fact, was already down to the 90th floor.

He was 54 and lived in the Green Pond section of Rockaway Township in New Jersey.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 22, 2001.

Robert Mattson, 54, 'ordinary good guy' Robert D. Mattson was one of the last people to leave the World Trade Center when it was bombed by terrorists in 1993.

At that time, Mr. Mattson, a decorated Army veteran of Vietnam and longtime banker with Fiduciary Trust Company International, helped rescue a pregnant co-worker before being airlifted to safety from a rooftop.

"He was there in '93 and was the last one out," Mr. Mattson's wife, Elizabeth, recalled. "An employee was 81/2 months pregnant, and he stayed with her. They carried her 16 flights to the roof. They came off the roof in a helicopter."

On Sept. 11, Mr. Mattson, a 54-year-old resident of the Green Pond section of Rockaway Township, was working on the 96th floor of the South Tower when the North Tower was struck by a hijacked plane. He spoke to his wife of 29 years to tell her he was all right and was making his way out of the building.

"He called me and said, 'A plane hit Tower One. It's not my building. I'm all right and I'm on my way out.' He was on the 90th floor," Elizabeth Mattson said.

Then, the second airplane struck Two World Trade Center.

Though she may never know for sure, she has heard that her husband was once again trying to hasten the evacuation of others by "directing traffic" inside the building.

"He was a wonderful husband and a great father. He was just an ordinary good guy," she said.

Employed as a senior vice president for Fiduciary Trust, Mr. Mattson worked for the firm the past 30 years.

Mr. Mattson was born in Brooklyn, attended Cardinal Farley Military Academy in New York and graduated from the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico in 1969.

For his heroism in Vietnam, Mr. Mattson was awarded the Bronze Star.

During the past 21 years, Mr. Mattson lived in Green Pond, where he was a former president of the community's board of directors. He also was a former Little League and basketball coach in Rockaway Township. Mr. Mattson was an avid runner and enjoyed playing tennis and golf.

Along with his wife, Mr. Mattson is survived by a daughter, Jean, 22, and a son, James, 21, both at home; his mother, Marguerite Mattson; and a brother, William Mattson, both of Staten Island, N.Y.

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Mountain Lakes.

9/11/12. Was watching television today regarding the 11th Anniversary of that horrible day, 9/11....when I saw Robert D. Mattson's name across the bottom of the screen as one of the victims. It really struck me, as my Dad's name was Robert D.Mattson, Des Moines, Iowa.... (dec. Jan, 1981). I read about your husband, father, friend and what an extraordinary human being he was. And, am saying a prayer for his soul and for your peace of mind. God Bless you.

Dear Lizbeth, Jeannie, and Jimmy,
Jaime just sent me this link and once again, I cried for Bob's memory and what you have all gone through. I admire and respect your strength, and know that he is proud of the lives you have carved out for yourselves these past ten years. Lizbeth, we go WAY back, and I also have so many riotous memories of raising our kids together at the lake. Jeannie, you were always so darn cute and such fun. Jimmy, you were Jaime's first love, at age five! We think of Bob often, his crazy sense of humor, and his caring and commitment to those around him. We wish you all the best, and know that you will be greeted at Heaven's gates and reunited. With Much Love, Bonnie and Dave Coe

On 02/26/1993, after the 1st WTC Attack, I coordinated/participated in the rescue of 40 people from the 94th Floor of 2 WTC. 23 of those removed were rescued by helicopter. Recently I came across a copy of my notes from that day. Bob Mattson was one of those rescued by helicopter. I believe Robert is the same person. It is heartbreaking, and I'm sorry you did not make it out. May You Rest in Peace.

Robert Mattson worked for Fiduciary Trust and so did I. I never knew Robert but many did at Fiduciary Trust I lost my job at Fiduciary in October 2002 and went on over 150 interviews the one interview I went on at US Trust I will never forget. The interviewer ask me Fiduciary Trust do you know Robert Mattson I said I knew the name. He responded he was my best friend my life long friend we took our families on camping trips together and he showed me a picture. Fiduciary was my first job out of college at 22 he probably had kids my age. This continues to be a nightmare for all of us that survived the twin towers the guilt never heals

On September the 11th,2002 I had the honor of wearing Mr. Mattson's name at the preformance of the Mozart Requiem in Columbus Ohio. Please know, that through this music, many people around the world have recieved some sense of comfort and solice. Hopefully Mr. Mattson's friends and family will be able to gain comfort in knowing those lost on that horrible day will never be forgotten. "Strangers are only friends we have yet to meet."

I would just like to send my thoughts and prayers to you. I participated in the "Rolling Requiem" on Wednesday the 11th. In every time zone at exactly 8:46 AM groups sang Mozart's Requiem. My school participated in this, and we each had a button with a name of a victim of 9-11. I received Mr. Mattson's, and I would just like you to know that I am praying for you and that my thoughts, as well as many others at Lincoln High School are with you.

I worked for Fiduciary Trust Co. of

New York from 1965 to 1974. I was

secretary to the firm's general

counsel (Mr. Lacovara), in the Legal

Dept. Bob Mattson was then an Administrative Assistant, and he worked closely with my boss. I remember his great sense of humor

as he would come over to my desk and jokingly ask "what kind of mood

is the boss in" and "is it safe to go in?" He always had his cup of

coffee in his hand, and we always

joked about the events of the day.

When I left in 1974, I lost contact

with many of the people there, but I

have fond memories of my years there.

I will never forget Bob and his

smiling face, his good nature and his jokes, which always added a happy note to my day. May he rest

in peace, and may his wife and family know that he was loved by many people.

Always in our thoughts and prayers. God bless, "Uncle Bob".

I met Bob in 1973 when I started working at Fiduciary Trust Company of New York on Wall Street. In 1974 FTCo. moved up to the 94th floor of 2 World Trade Center. Our offices were elaborate with a "beautiful sea of blue carpet" at our feet. I worked with Bob for 7 1/2 years. He was extremely serious when it came to business, but he was also funny and caring. I especially remember how excited he was when he and his wife adopted his daughter. A few years later I also adopted a daughter and we often compared notes. I haven't seen Bob since 1980 but, through mutual FTCo. friends, always extended greetings. I know that he is watching over his wife and children in his caring way.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
