Christopher Dincuff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
He Knew How to Share
What his friends and family will tell you about Christopher Dincuff, who would have been 32 today, an assistant trader for Carr Futures, is that he was always smiling.

"He always made people feel welcome," said his mother, Joan. "I never had to teach him how to share." He became the center of a large circle of friends, some of whom had known him since childhood in South River, N.J. All of them learned that if the Villanova Wildcats were playing basketball, he had to hear or see the game.

"He has driven his car to remote places just to get the Villanova game on the radio," said Garth Smalley, his best friend. Mr. Dincuff's father, Jim, a Seton Hall graduate, accompanied him to Seton Hall-Villanova games.

Mr. Dincuff's proposal to his fiancee, Angie Gutermuth, last February encompassed several passions at once. As Ms. Gutermuth opened the door to her apartment, exhausted after business-school exams, she discovered a trail of rose petals, illuminated by candles, that led to Mr. Dincuff, dozens of helium balloons arrayed around him. There was champagne, and music, and a ring he had designed himself. He arranged for her to have a manicure the next day, at the same time there was a Villanova game on TV.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on November 26, 2001.

Christopher Dincuff, 31, a romantic

His friends called him "The Mayor of South River."

Growing up, Christopher More Dincuff was a class president and member of three varsity sports teams at South River High School. Long after he moved away, he was still a fixture at football games and other events in his small Middlesex County hometown.

He knew the town so well, friends would blindfold him, drive him to some obscure corner and have him guess what street he was on. He was usually right.

"He knew everybody. He knew where everybody lived," said his mother, Joan, who still lives in South River.

Mr. Dincuff of Jersey City formed similar close bonds with co-workers at Carr Futures, where he was an energy group account executive. He died when terrorists attacked One World Trade Center on Sept. 11. He was 31.

Born in New Brunswick, Mr. Dincuff earned a business degree from Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Before starting his financial career, he worked for a minor league baseball team in California, indulging his passion for sports.

He and his fiancée, Angela Gutermuth of Boonton, were planning a September 2002 wedding.

"He was a hopeless, hopeless romantic. He always made everything special for me, even ordinary days," Gutermuth said.

In addition to his mother and fiancee, Mr. Dincuff is survived by his father, Frank, and stepmother, Eileen, of Piscataway; two sisters, Beth of North Brunswick and Amy of South River; a brother, Ian of Piscataway, and grandmothers Helen Rojek and Helen Dincuff, both of South River.

Although I did not know Christopher personally, I would see him daily across the hall from the first elementary classroom I taught in during my 33 year career in teaching. Chris was always smiling and friendly entering Mr. Orem’s room. He had charisma and a joy for life, even in 4th grade. He was a child you could tell was going places in this world. I think of him and watch for his name each year. Prayers to his family and loved ones.

I graduated from South River HS with Chris in 1988. Although we didn’t hang out together, he was always friendly to everyone in class and in the hallway, he would always give you a big smile and hello. My friend Michelle Hull and I ran into Chris and his best friend Garth at the bar on Main St in SR called Cocktails one evening (I think it was in the summer of 2000) and we hung out with Chris and Garth drinking and dancing and having a great time. He made everyone feel like a friend. He was such an incredible person. Outgoing, smart and friendly beyond compare! I think of him and his family often. Reading the book Fall and Rise of 9/11 really helped shed some light on that day. Even with the passing of time, people will never forget Chris and all of the people who lost their lives in that senseless act. Our hearts ache for you. ~Ann (Cabell) Rutkowski

Dink, 19 years ago today this world lost such a bright light. It’s hard not to think about what could have been. You were the kindest human being I had ever met and treated everyone the same. After all this time I can still see that wonderful smile of yours. Thinking of and praying for your family today and hoping they have some comfort knowing you are looking down on them. Till we meet again.

Dear Christopher,

We are thinking of you today sweet Chris. I remember your first day as an intern at our California minor league baseball team, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. You were a favorite of our staff.

I remember the day Jeff Patza (another intern) and you came to live with Rebecca, Matthew and me. Intern pay was little at best and this insured saving some money as the ball season was ending and you would be returning home.

Those were fun times and you were such great counsel to Rebecca and Matthew who remember your talks and pranks well.

Many years have past and please know you will always have a place in our hearts. XXOO

Hi Chris
So many years ago that we worked together at the Quakes. I had no idea that you were it that building 9 years ago today until a couple of weeks after that sad day the Daily Bulletin called me for comment on your passing - I was stunned.
Rebecca and Matthew remember with you with such wonderful memories - especially when you lived with us for a while at the end of your Quakes internship.
I went to NY a few years ago - I wanted to "find" you at ground zero - I did! I saw your smile and felt your warmth and kindness.
We miss you our baseball friend and you will always hold a special place in all of our hearts.
Much love to you from Lyndi, Rebecca and Matthew Alongi

September 11, 2009

Hi. I decided to write to you today because no one else has written to you on this 8th anniversary and also I had planned to do this since I found this website a few months ago and found you. You may not know who I am which is fine because the last time you saw me I was a baby and I am 15 now. I am John Chando's son, Michael, you knew him pretty well. I remember when you passed, I don't remember being told, but I do remember your picture in the paper along with the many others, and the obituary. We no longer live in New Jersey, rather Tennessee, but we visit it there often, well, we try to. I drive by your house, and I actually think about you often, though I have no physical memory of you I don't think. So basically I guess I wanted to say hi, and that there are many people still thinking of you, and those people including myself will continue to think of you for as long as we live. And then we will die and hopefully come to be with you. Honestly, I am not sure completely why I wrote this, you probably know most of it already since you are with God, but it doesn't hurt to do so. So hi Chris (if you don't mind me calling you that), we still think of you everyday and will continue to do so until our deaths when we will come to be with you with God in heaven. Take care-

I only learned today of your passing. I always felt blessed that I didn't know anyone that had perished that horrible day but I can feel that no longer. I worked with Chris at the Quakes Baseball team in Rancho Cucamonga. He was an intern. They didn't make much money and had to work so hard but he never complained. He always had a smile on his face. He was an inspiration to all his co-workers. I know he is in a better place but am very saddened about how he died. I will always remember him. I now know that I too lost a good friend that sad day. Rest in peace my friend. I will see you again.

Hi Cris, I'm writing here because I think of you often. I've been having a lot of dreams about you. Mostly of when you, Terry, Jason, John, and George would come down to the shore. We had so much fun and always seemed to laugh till we cramped. I've gone to Dailey's to visit and pay my respects but still leave with that emptiness. I would have never known you were Mr. popular because to me you were just another dude hangin out. You were always so easy going and cool. I'm glad I didn't know because we were just normal people sharing normal conversations without any labels. I waas very truly hurt to hear you had been engaged and was forced to think of what a great husband and father you would undoubtedly become. I never thought you would leave us so soon but it's fitting that you are leading the way. I just wanted to say, I miss you. You may be away but in my dreams we are still all together, hanging on the shore, and laughing til we cry. God bless you and keep you for eternity. We will meet again, but not yet.

I story about Chris I would like to share.I was raised in freehold by only one parent,my mother who suddenly died during xmas break 1988.After the holiday I had to move in with my grandparents in South River.I spent the first 16 years of my life in the same town, house, bedroom ect.then in the blink of an eye,I am in a new town, new school, and my mother is dead so I didn'y exactly hit the school on the proper note.I also didn't want my story mentioned to anyone and I hated attention.Anybody who went to srhs knows how small the school was in the 80,s so when you were new in school, everyone new it.I didn't talk to anyone and some people thought I was cocky or weird, ect.I just had alot going on.One thing I would always do was dress in somekind of pro sports jersey and shoot baskets at the park ect.One day Chris comes up and to me and says hi.He said I notice you like basketball and you prob.dont know many people here yet.He told me where all the kids played and was one of the first people in the school that just stopped to ask me about me.Looking back...A kid who was a popular as him...athlete,girls,grades,ect.Why would he or anyone care about a new kid.Thats how he was and I always wished one day as technology has gotten better I could have looked him up on the internet to say thanx.I never got to know him that well but as I got used to the school he would always say hi to me and give me a lowfive in the hallway as we passed. He was a good man.I guess this is my way of saying thanx Chris.

I graduated with Chris in 1988. He was such a wonderful, caring person. Always a hello. Always had a smile on his face. He was one that never, ever said a bad thing about anyone, or never judged anyone. He was friendly with everyone and anyone. There wasn't a negative bone in his body. All of that is what I will always remember about Chris Dincuff.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Chris' family and friends today and everyday.

I knew Chris from Belmar and didn't find out that he was one of the victims of 9/11 until last year's ceremony. I think I have been in shock since then. Although I hadn't seen Chris in a while, what everyone says about his smile is true. Once you see it, it is etched in your head forever. Someone as special as Chris will live on in the hearts of those who loved and knew him. I know wherever he is, he is looking down on his loved ones with that big smile of his everyday. Again, my sympathies to his family and friends.

Chris and I graduated from high school in South River back in '88. He really had the power to touch people. I still remember the National Honor Society inductions, he had nothing but kind and encouraging words to say to me. We share a picture from that night in the '88 yearbook. I wish I could've been a closer friend to him but just knowing him has made me a better person. Chris, may God reward you for the kindness and love you have given to everyone throughout your short life.

On the 2nd anniversary of 9/11, my thoughts and prayers are with all of the people who lost loved ones so senselessly.

Although I didn't know "Dink" personally, his name somehow managed to pop into conversations I was having with my girlfriends from Villanova '92 that knew him. What I remember most is that when his name came up in conversation, a smile, a giggle, a laugh or a funny story always followed.

My heart goes out to all of you who knew him well, especially his family and his fiance. Remember the good times, celebrate his life and smile when you think of him. He'll be smiling back at you.

I worked with Chris at Dean Witter. You could always count on him to be in a good humor and never be petty about anything. His good will and upbeat attitude were infectious. He could be counted on to be there when the going got tough. He was one of the best co-workers I ever had the privilege of working with.Even though most of the people I knew and worked with at Dean Witter were lost on 9/11, I hope that Chris and all the others who were so special are somehow aware that they will never be forgotten by those who knew them.

I don't know, why but today I was thinking about Chris all day. I was lucky to have coached him at South River High School in Football. He loved everything about SR and long after he graduated he could be seen at every SR Football game. I pray that he and his family find God's peace. The world was a better place because of him and I know I am a better person having known him. God Bless Chris, you scored a touchdown on Homecoming Day!!!!!

I knew Chris through work. We talked on the phone often. I trusted him implicitly and only met him once, that's the type of person he was. He had a magnanimous personality and an infectious spirit. My thoughts and prayers go out to his fiancé, family and friends. Chris' smile will now live on OUR faces forever. I miss you Chris.

A Friend from Villanova

I knew Chris from Villanova. I can remember partying with him and the LXA brothers in the parking lot behind Bartley his Senior Year. He was the life of the party. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I feel sorry that I did not do a better job of staying in touch with him.

I knew Chris from school in South River. We were in the same kindergarten class, We became good school friends, sharing many of the same classes from kindergarten until we graduated from South River High.

After high school was over, we lost touch, but Chris would always be glad to see me whenever we ran into each other at a South River High School football game or elsewhere around town.

When our ten year high school reunion came to pass, I was debating whether to attend. When my wife asked me if we were going to attend, I replied, "It would be nice to see Chris". And so we went. Chris was that kind of person. Always greeting you with a smile and treating you with more than just common respect. I think about Chris often, especially now as the anniversary of the terrible trajedy is upon us.

My heart goes out to his family and close friends.

My memories of Christopher are all happy memories from his carefree high school days. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to work with him on the activities of the Class of '88 for he brought joy to all who knew him. A more generous, loving spirit it would be hard to find. He brought out the good in all of us. Now that he is gone, I treasure the memories and try to aspire to his goodness in my daily life. I pray he will rest forever in God's peace. I keep him and his dear family in my heart and in my prayers. We miss you Christopher. I pray you can feel our love.

I knew Chris from Villanova, and I can honestly say I have no memories of him without a smile on his face.

To his family and closest of friends, know he will forever influence and be remembered by those he met.

I consider myself lucky to have shared smiles and laughs with him. Thanks Chris. God bless.

You only had to meet Chris once to know why he had so many friends in South River and at Villanova Univ.

He would always greet you with a big smile. You could be having the worst morning, you would see Dink at lunch and in an instant he would have you laughing! He was always the center of attention - usually telling a story, a joke or "running his bit" as he used to call it.

All of us were fortunate to know him. God bless you Chris.

I am so sorry this happened to you. Even without knowing you, from what I have read, you were a very special, loved person and the world will forever have a void. I will never forget what you gave up for this country.

I can finally think of Chris now and smile. It took a very long time and sometimes it still turns to tears, but he was such a happy person that his smile can make me smile! We love you Chris and we miss you. Our family will never be the same - he was a great cousin!

"Dink"

I graduated from Villanova with you in '92. "MAKE IT HAPPEN" was our slogan. You my friend were one of those fun loving, make it happen kind of guys. Even the shear mention of your name brings a smile to my face. Most of the moments I remember of you were a bunch of us whooping it up and having a hell of a time around Nova.

My prayers go out to you and your family. I for you can never seem to look at a picture of those towers and not think of you and other friends we lost on that day.

You will be missed "Dink". I know wherever you are, you are having fun and making things happen....
