Raymond Rocha Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2001.
28 Weddings in 3 Years
Everyone Raymond J. Rocha met, it seemed, became part of his large family, and he was constantly in touch. His girlfriend counted 28 weddings they went to in three years. Even his ex- girlfriends came to his sister's wedding or his annual ski trip, where Mr. Rocha bought everyone walkie-talkies because cellphones would not work on the mountain. A prankster, he would leave rubber snakes in people's beds. At a friend's birthday party, he would wear a silly costume.

But he would also bake a beautiful cake. The youngest of five and a new bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald, Mr. Rocha was cooking and balancing bank statements at an early age, in part because his mother, Ann Rocha, was losing her sight. "I loved to go shopping with him because he was very patient with me," she said. "He would read me every ingredient."

It was easy to tell when Mr. Rocha had been around. People would find that someone had marked March 27 on their calendars "Ray Day." Plans were already under way for next Ray Day, when Mr. Rocha would have turned 30.

Every 911 I think of the football players I had the privilege to coach at many colleges that I was a part of, men who lost their lives on 9/11. I always think of Ray! And I always miss him! Ray was a phenomenal man, a tremendous person and an inspiration to all of us who knew, respected, admired and loved him. I had the honor to coach him at Brown. He was a young man who only knew one speed.... Fast! He was so dedicated to his friends and loved Brown football. I'll never forget him, will always admire him and will love him forever....

We very often fly two American Flags on flagposes in our front yard. One of them has Raymond's photo and the following on a piece of paper taped to the flag pole: Raymond J Rocha, 29, Cantor Fitzgerald, Maiden, MA,United States, World Trade Center. The other flag pole has the following taped to it: Photo of Thomas Sparacio 35, Euro Brokers Inc, New York, NY, United States, World Trade Center. We pray for both of these heroes and their families and friends. We received our flags & poles after the memorial display was removed from "Art Hill" in Forest Park, St Louis, MO over 9/11/11. God bless America!

To Ray,
Though I'll leave this post anonymous, I know that you're if there is a heaven, you are there. And, I feel as though you are looking down and sending your spirit. From the 'things' I have been directly told, I can gather that you were a very special person to all but especially to the person who tells me these things. I know that you share a bond like no other and even through I'll never meet you, maybe you're watching me write this right now. I just want you to know that you aren't forgotten and I'm 100% sure that you never will be. I hear about you so much, I feel like I was the one who knew the boy who dressed as Roger Rabbit. I'm looking up at the sky and thinking, 'maybe I don't need to leave my name.. He knows'

Ray, it's wonderful to see just how many lives you touched, both near and far. You were quite the character and people often remember how you made them feel alive. The lack of your presence is one that is still strongly felt and will never be filled. Thank you for giving us so much love, so much fun, so much excitement and so much mischief during your abbreviated time on earth. Thinking of you always...

I just felt that I should write something on this day. It is obvious that Ray touched so many people and left such a lasting impression. After all these years I still remember the conversations he had with me and how he look differently at school, sports, ethics and life in general. I always felt he was in my corner and someone who truly cared. Being a father now, I know that Ray had a major influence on how I interact and spend time with my family. The other night I was driving home from visiting my parents in Melrose, I was going down the fellsway and I felt the need to stop and look at his number hanging on the side of the gym. I didn't say anything. I didn't feel anything... I just remembered the times at the Y, the times on the football field, the times walking home from elementary school and just talking. Thanks RayRay.

Although I think of Ray often, today was different, more so than any other 9-11 anniversarry, Ray has been in my thoughts throughout this entire day. Ray has had such an impact for me on this day in particular, it led me to this site which I hadn't visited before. I met Ray way back in the seventh grade and like so many other people who knew him, grew up with him, went to school with him, worked with him.... Ray truly was a great human being. I found myself this evening glancing thru our high school yearbook (which I haven't done in years) searching all of the pages where Ray's pictures appeared. I must have re-read the personal message he wrote in my book 10 times tonight not knowing if I should laugh or cry! I'm glad I had an opportunity to share these thoughts to everyone who ever knew RayRay. Although many years now removed from the streets of Melrose and the Porter Street house where Ray grew up and I hung out often, he will always be remembered.

I went to high school with Ray and while we were more acquaintances than friends, it's always Ray that I think of whenever my mind drifts back to that terrible day. He was the only one I knew personally and Ray always struck me as a "good guy". Seeing people post here still after several years only confirms that he was loved and probably even a better person than I might have imagined. We all had to find our own ways to grieve for this tragic event and hopefully it will be of some small comfort to his family (and close friends) that even those who weren't very close to Ray still thought of him and prayed for you in the wake of 9/11. I'll save my anger for all that has taken place since that day for another forum but I just wanted the Rocha family to know there are so many out there that knew Ray and felt the same way even if you never heard from them.
