Michael Howell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2001.
Boundless Energy
Michael C. Howell rarely took vacations or sick days. He simply found it hard to slow down at Fred Alger Management Inc., where he was the director of management information systems. His high energy also was evident in his tennis game: he played to win. He used to be on the courts nearly every weekend with his 29-year-old son, Kevin, also a computer network engineer. His son was wary of his father's very good forehand.

Mr. Howell, 60, had to make a rotten choice recently. He had been handed a ticket to the United States Open. Should he go? He reluctantly decided that he had too many meetings planned and clients to see. His wife, Emily, remembers how he did the funniest thing. He left his office on the 93rd floor of 1 World Trade Center and drove to his home in Bayside, Queens, staying just long enough to deliver the ticket to her. "He startled me," she says. Then he went straight back to work.

I want Mike's family to know that he made a huge difference in my life although I never had the honor of shaking his hand. I was calling his office the day it happened , he never answered the phone. My heart broke that day.

As I cross-stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vain. We will always remember. God Bless.

I never met Mike but I had the privilege of wearing his name on a red heart at a recent memorial gathering on September 11, 2002, in Santa Barbara, CA.

After reading about him I feel even a greater loss for what was obviously a sweet, gentle spirited man with many loved ones.

I pray that his family can find peace and comfort in our Lord, Jesus Christ and that we will all meet one another in eternity.

I only met Mr. Howell briefly while in New York on business a couple of years ago. It was my first visit to NY and he was so nice to me and my co-workers. He suggested places for us to visit and even though we only spoke for a few short minutes, he made us feel comfortable in a truly overwhelming city. I will always remember him for the kindness he showed us.

I had the honor of creating a quilt square for Michael C. Howell that was included in the United in Memory quilt being created as a tribute to those who lost their lives as a result of the 9/11 attacks. Unfortunately, I didn't have the privilege of knowing Mr. Howell. From what I have read about him, I think I probably would have enjoyed knowing him. My thoughts go out to his family.

To the Family of Mike Howell,

I work for COMPAQ in Colorado and spoke to Mike so very often on the phone. He spoke so very often of his family and I of mine, as I come from New York and my children still live on Long Island. Mike always told me to come and visit as he knew I was going to NY in August of 2001 for my daughter's wedding. I do so very much regret not visiting Mike at that time. He was such a great guy, and, although I never met him, he's still very much missed. My husband, son and I were sightseeing in NY at the end of August and I told them, I wish it weren't Sunday, I would bring you up to visit 'my friend' from work, Mike......but I never got the chance. God Bless you Mike and God Bless your family.....so glad his picture is posted...great to meet you!!! Many prayers, your 'friend', gayle schwartz

Dear Mike:

It's been six months and it seems like six years. I had the honor of attending your memorial on your birthday. It was first class, just like you. The cermony was very moving and I sopke with Emily for quite a while.

I know that you and Dolores had breakfast on most mornings, I often wonder if you were together that day. I sure hope so. Dolores was very fond of you and well maybe your friendship comforted one another. Although I only knew you for a short time, I considered you a friend. May God bless your soul and keep your family safe.

Mike:

I want to say how blessed I am to have known you. Although we met over the phone through a business deal last April, I feel as though you have been a friend my whole life. You had a gift, My Man--you could make someone feel at ease immediately upon meeting them. I knew we would be friends for a long time to come. I had a blast with you on those Friday nights down at COCO's ("Dry Tanqueray martini, please!") and I'm glad I was able to have one last one with you that Friday before 9/11! But now you're gone...

I'll miss you, Mike. God Bless!

I am so very sorry for your loss, I remember Mike from Digital Equipment Corporation. I just found out yesterday that Michael has left us! I could not stop crying, because in life you don't meet too many people like Mike, who loved life in everything he did! He made anyone smile, he made so many laugh, he was a mentor to everyone! The distinguished way in which he conducted himself made me proud to have known him. He was so orderly, and prepared-It's as if he always knew what to say at times when people could not find the words. He always spoke with such love and respect for his family. You can tell that his family was his joy in life, and his number one priority - He was so proud of his son! I remember a time, before I got married, that I hoped in life I would meet someone who spoke of me the way Michael spoke of his wife-My life has been blessed just knowing him, and again, I am truly sorry for your loss, no words can come to mind as far as how and why he was taken, except to say without any doubts... THAT NO COWARDLY BEING CAN TAKE THE SPIRIT AND POWER FROM A PERSON LIKE MIKE WHO'S WILL, LOVE, AND STRENGTH CAN NEVER BE SHATTERED --NOT FOR A SECOND, HOUR, OR ETERNITY~

God Bless you and your family - Love ~ Julia

Mike and I worked together for Digital Equipment Corp. Our cubicles were across from each other's. I remember him as a quiet, very nice man; I was sorry to see him leave the company and he'll be very much missed by his former co-workers.

We are very sorry for your loss of Michael. May his life and love live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Mike & I were friends at Alger. Whenever I had a computer problem or needed something he would always take the time to help me out. No matter what craziness was going on in the company he always remained calm & cool. I will miss him dearly along with all the others that were losted in the WTC tragedy. I pray for him and his family during this difficult time.
