Lawrence Dickinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2001.
Keeping It Simple
L. Patrick Dickinson loved jaunts to Hershey Park in Pennsylvania, visits to Williamsburg, Va., and trips to Las Vegas. But most of all he relished family time at home in Marlboro, N.J., sitting by the pool, relaxing on the couch while his daughter Erin, 7, fell asleep on his belly, or playing a mean game of Trivial Pursuit.

Mr. Dickinson, 35, a stockbroker on the American Stock Exchange who worked for Harvey Young Yurman, spent long days in the hectic world of futures and options trading, standing on the floor of the exchange. On Sept. 11, he was having his weekly Tuesday morning meeting at Windows on the World. With him were five colleagues from his company, including his brother-in-law, who is also missing.

With his days so frenzied, Mr. Dickinson kept it simple when he was away from work, said his wife, Linda. "It was enough for him to look at the stars at night or relax by the pool," said Mrs. Dickinson, who met her husband 18 years ago when the two worked at a five-and-dime store in Jersey City. She is expecting their second child in December.

On September 15, 2016, as I was getting ready to enter into the 9/11 museum, I stopped by the reflection pool to pay tribute to the lives lost. On my walk I saw several roses signifying peoples birthdays, but this one stuck out to me. Since then I have only been able to find small amounts of information on you and your family, but wanted to share this photograph with you. I hope you enjoy it. Happy early birthday to you Mr. Dickinson! We will never forget.

Although I did not know you and I do not know your family, I just recently visited the 9/11 memorial last week. We walked to a random spot at the North Pool to stand and reflect. We looked down and the first name we see is yours. I found this to be some kind of sign or maybe a "hello" from you, since we share the same last name. I'm not sure if we are related or not, but I can't believe that out of all the places to stop along both pools that the first place we stopped at was by our shared name. I wanted to share my experience here so that your friends and family might see this.

Thinking Of You...

March 27, 2014

He was becoming unstuck, he was sure of that - his bones were no longer wrapped in flesh but in clouds of dust, in hummingbirds, dragonflies, and luminous moths - but so perfect was his equilibrium that he felt no fear. He was vast, he was many, he was dynamic, he was eternal.

I went to Marist HS with Pat and was a year ahead of him. We played intramural Volley ball together my junior his sophmore year. Our team won because we had the HS Quarterback on our team Michael LaFrance. Pat was the smallest member of the team but no slouch at all on the court. True to all previous posting's of a quiet individual with very few words. Obviously God needed a bunch of Angel's one day and he got an ACE!!!

A man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries

And high above him you hear the church bells start to ring.

The heaviness, the heaviness of it settles in,

A mother starts to sing.

Then it's one foot then the other as you step along the road

Steppin' on the road, how much weight, how much weight?

And it's how long and how far and how many times,

Oh, before it's too late?

Calling all angels, Calling all angels.

Walk me through this one, don't leave me alone.

Calling all angels, Calling all angels.

We're trying, we're hoping, but we're not sure how...

Oh and every day you gaze upon the sunset

With such love and intensity.

Why it's almost as if, if you could only crack the code

You'd finally understand what this all means.

Oh but if you could, do you think you would

Have traded all the pain and suffering?

Oh, but then you would've missed the beauty of the light upon this earth

And the sweetness of the leaving.

Calling all angels, Calling all angels!

Walk me through this one, don't leave me alone

Calling all angels, calling all angels,

We're trying, we're hoping but we're not sure...

Calling all angels (call all angels)

Calling all angels (call all angels)

Walk me through this one

Don't leave me alone.

Calling all angels, Calling all angels

We're trying, we're hoping, we're hurting, we're loving

We're crying, we're calling,

But we're not sure how this goes.

January 20, 2004

Please don't mourn for me.

I'm still here.

Though you don't see me, I'm right by your side each night and day and within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone, but I'm always near.

I'm everything you feel, see or hear.

My spirit is free, but I'll never depart.

As long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I'll never wander out of your sight.

I'm the brightest star on a summer night.

I'll never be beyond your reach.

I'm the warm, moist sand when you're at the beach.

I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes around.

And the pure white snow that blankets the ground.

I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond of, the clear cool water in a quite pond.

I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the Spring.

The first warm raindrop that April will bring.

I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine.

And you'll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there's no one to love you, You can talk to me through the Lord above you.

I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees.

And you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I'm the hot, salty tears that flow when you weep.

And the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.

I'm the smile you see on the baby's face.

Just look for me, I'm every place!

On 9/11/2003, 3,412 American flags were unfurled in a Tribute Field in Lubbock, Texas. Each flag represented an individual who lost his/her life in the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. We purchased the flag that flew in honor of Lawrence Patrick Dickinson. Although we never met him, we feel very close to him and his family. We would love to send a picture of the flag display and a card to his wife and kids. If anyone could tell us how to get in touch with them, please let us know. We shall not forget you Patrick!

Hi Pat,

The other day Joe and I took

a ride to see Linda and the kids.

We knew you were riding right

along with us, because

every time we visit them,

that same song comes

on the radio from the concert at

"The Arts Center".

We often think about that concert,

and how much we enjoyed that night

with you and Linda.

You are in our thoughts always.

Give Dad a big hug for me!

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time

That I'd see you fall asleep,

I would tuck you in more tightly

and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time

that I see you walk out the door,

I would give you a hug and kiss

and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time

I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,

I would video tape each action and word,

so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,

I could spare an extra minute

to stop and say "I love you,"

instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time

I would be there to share your day,

Well I'm sure you'll have

so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow

to make up for an oversight,

and we always get a second chance

to make everything just right.

There will always be another day

to say "I love you,"

And certainly there's another chance

to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,

and today is all I get,

I'd like to say how much I love you

and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,

young or old alike,

And today may be the last chance

you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,

why not do it today?

For if tomorrow never comes,

you'll surely regret the day,

that you didn't take that extra

time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss

and you were too busy

to grant someone, what turned out to

be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,

and whisper in their ear,

tell them how much you love them

and that you'll always hold them dear.

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"

"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."

And if tomorrow never comes,

you'll have no regrets about today.

Anyone who had the privledge, and it was a privledge, of knowing Pat would tell you he was one of a kind. We went to St. Al's grammar school together and were best friends from about 1971-1977. He was quiet but had a lot of friends. He wasn't shy but respectful of eveyrone. He loved his family and friends. I used to tease him and say he was like a rock or a piece of wood because nothing ever fazed him. He never showed fear. I remember once a bunch of us were threatened by bigger kids in Lincoln Park. Everybody ran. Not Pat. That's how he was. If he read this posting he'd probably groan, "Oh Please."

Strength is not a question of body-building or beauty tips from Men's Health magazine. It knowing who you are and having the courage of your beliefs. That may sound corny, but in Pat it was true. He was always there for his friends and he never judged anybody. I realize now that I use him as the standard for judging my friends. Few have come close.

Last week I ran some old home movies. In one there was a kid about 11 years old covering his face and refusing to look at the camera. It took me minute to realize it was Pat. It brought back a lot of memories. Going to the movies at the Square, Gifford and Fairmount Aves., doing homework, playing records, talking for hours and hours. I was good in English and grammar; Pat was better in Math. I can still recall how his forhead crinkled up as he figured out a tough problem, not satisfied until he had the answer.

We lost touch after I left St. Al's in the seventh grade. I ran into him in McCrory's in Bayonne years ago. He was going to State Teachers at the time and he introduced me to Linda. We exchanged phone numbers but I never got around to calling. I'm a lot poorer for that.

I've thought about Pat a lot these many months. After the sorrow, anger, sadness and the rollercoaster of emotions, I realize I am rich because I did have him as a friend. Most friends have long since faded from memory but 25 years later I can recall Patrick like it was yesterday. And those memories get stronger every day.

I may not have known you, but through your brother Joe, and his wonderful wife, I feel as though I did. Joe and I have been friends since the 1980's and he always spoke so proudly of you. One thing we always had in common was the importance of family, which is what makes this so difficult. Since Joe and I lost touch for a while, I only recently found out about this loss, and this American tragedy has taken on a new meaning for us. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Joe and Maryann, may God give you and your family the faith and strength you need. I so want to reach out, but haven't thought of the right words to say. We think of you often and miss you both.

I worked with Patrick and Linda at the same store in Jersey City where they met. Patrick is in all my high school prom pictures as he escorted a friend who did not have a date. He was a quiet, sweet guy and my heart breaks for Linda and their children. They are all in my thoughts and prayers.
