Robert Wallace Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 25, 2001.
Humor Against Adversity
Nancy Wallace remembers Robert, her husband of 21 years, for his wacky sense of humor and the way he took every little car breakdown in stride. And there were many. "We put three engines in it, and two trannies," she said of the family's Jeep Wagoneer. "Half the time we didn't make it to where we were going."

She remembers him trudging through the snow to buy baby aspirin when the family was stuck in a snowstorm in the early 1980's. And she remembered how after those babies had turned into teenagers, the whole family — their four children and a nephew — slept in the broken-down Wagoneer on the highway because nearby hotels were full.

Lieutenant Wallace, 43, followed his father into firefighting, and was known for pointing at the sky above Engine 205 in Brooklyn Heights, just to get people to look up, too. "My family used to tease him," Mrs. Wallace recalled, "and he'd say, 'No, I'm going off to fight fires and save the people of New York.' "We'd say, 'Oh, get outta here,' and he'd say, 'I'm going to go fight fires and save the people of New York.' "

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 30, 2001.

My name is Jeremy Upchurch and I am a Firefighter/Paramedic from Bartlett, TN. I did the 9/11 stair climb today in Nashville, TN and I did the climb in honor of Lt. Wallace. Reading about this man motivated me more than anything could to complete the climb. I just wanted to thank him and his family for everything. We will never forget.

I want you to know that Lt. Wallace is not forgotten. I participated in the 9/11 Stair Climb in Denver today in his honor. 343 firefighters from around the country each climbed 110 flights in full gear. I was honored to walk in his memory.

I am going on a trip with my school this month to the memorial and we were all assigned a fire fighter that was lost on 9 11 to do a project on to keep their memories alive. I was picked to do a project on Robert Wallace. He seems like he was a great man and loving father, but I would love to get in touch with someone who really knew him, a son daughter mother father wife friend coworker anyone, that would be willing to give me any info or pictures about who he was as a as a person. Anything you want to share is fantastic and greatly appreciated. I believe these projects are going to be left at a memorial near ground 0 if anyone wants to go see it.
thank you and I am so sorry for your loss contact me at my email with any info [email protected]

We decided to choose a few names from the Memorial last month and honor them by learning more about their life. I am glad that Robert Wallace was one of them. He sounded like a wonderful man - husband and father. I am very sorry for your loss. May his spirit live on in your hearts and your memories.

We took a photo at the memorial last October - just before Hurricane Sandy hit. Your husband's name plaque was in the photo. I've only just googled Lt.Wallace. He sounded like a terrific chap. Best wishes.

Your dad is well and still with you. I went to the memorial site today and in line I was kept feeling like a man named Rob/Bob was with me. The first name I saw at the South tower memorial was your dads. I took a picture and googled him when I got home because I could not get it out of my mind. He looked just like the imagine in my head except his hair was gray and he was a little thinner. Sorry if this freaks you out but I know he wanted to tell you he is still with you and loves you. I swear I am a normal person. I wanted you to know this. He loves you and is watching over you.

On Sept 9, 2012 myself along with 342 other local Fire Fighters from around the Kansas City area completed a memorial stair climb in honor of the brothers and sisters we lost on 9/11. I am privileged to say that I was climbing in the name of Lt. Robert Wallace - Engine 205. Even though I didn't know Robert personally, I researched him and his family and can tell he was a great husband, father and co-worker. I am blessed to have climbed in his name and I wear a bracelet with Bob's name on it to remind me of the sacrifice he made that day 11 years ago. Thank you

SF 9/11/11 Transamerica Stair Climb

Noelle Nixon

September 16, 2011

Dear Wallace family, my name is Noelle Nixon and I am a first responder for the Squaw Valley Ski Patrol in Lake Tahoe. It was my honor to carry Robert's I.D. card in San Francisco on 9/11/11 up the Transamerica building for the honorary stair climb. It was a beautiful ceremony and I wanted you to know that he gave me the courage to climb up those stairs on that day. My friends were encouraging but also said on that particular day ‘most people are avoiding tall buildings and not climbing up them’; my response was that I knew men like Lt. Wallace didn’t differentiate between internal fears and that of doing the job set before them on that morning.

My words are not soothing as that of Ryan Glider's note from Kansas, but my experience was very similar. I rang the bell and said his name out loud, Lt. Robert Wallace- Thank you and all of the other FD/ PD that made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11/01. May you rest in peace.

-Noelle Nixon

September 13, 2011

On Sunday September 11, 2011, I along with 8 other members of the Lenexa Fire Department had the honor of completing the Kansas City Stair Climb in honor of the fallen 343 FDNY brothers and sisters as a result of the terrorist attacks of the 9/11/01. The event was amazing to witness. Everything from the opening ceremonies with the bag pipes playing Amazing Grace to the crowds cheering you on as you made your laps through the main lobby and to the eventual ringing of the bell to honor the lost. I always wondered what went through the minds of those guys as they were heading up those stairs. I got a shadowed glimpse into their path. I was climbing for Lt. Robert Wallace of Engine 205. I carried his picture with me as I vowed to finish his intended path with dignity and honor. Our team of five set out on the path and at the doorway to the stairwell was a piece of the World Trade Center in a box being held by a fellow firefighter. I touched the cold metal and felt the chill go down my spine as it does for many others. The first 34 floors were easy. Sure, you feel the burn and the desire to get to the top but as you can imagine, firefighters come in all shapes, sizes, and degrees of ability. We would pass teams and that were stopped on the stairwells trying to catch their breath or adjusting their equipment. Eventually, they would pass us as we did the same. Occasionally, you would see guys drop equipment and others pick it up and carry it for them as they continued up those stairs as a team. We encouraged them and they encouraged us. Some looked as though they were not going to make it at all. However, their brothers stayed with them until they could continue. As the laps progressed, I started to think about what I was witnessing and if it was similar to what those guys were seeing on that day. We were cheered as we passed the crowds on the lower level. Were they cheered on by the civilians going down those steps? We had water waiting on us at certain floors and a place to stop and rest to recover. Did they have that luxury? I am proud to say that we finished as a team. Our guys pushed themselves and drove on to complete the mission. Personally, as I entered the lobby to the sounds of cheers to ring the bell, say “Lt. Robert Wallace FDNY Engine 205” prior to completing those last steps to the top to complete 110 floors, I felt that there was something missing from that experience. Sure I made it to the top with my team but making it to the top of those steps wasn’t the mission that day. The path to the top was the drive to the call. The top of those steps was where the work began. I didn’t feel the sense of accomplishment as some may have because in the back of my mind I knew that we had it far better than those guys did that day. Many probably knew that they were never coming out of that building and the fact that they continued is what makes them heroes. I will never forget the 343. Especially, Lt. Robert Wallace FDNY Engine 205.

My thoughts will always be with your family and I will never forget.

My 165 floor climb honoring Lt. Robert Wallace.

September 11, 2011

My husband is a Firefighter and today I did a 9/11 Ten Year Anniversary stair climb to honor the fallen 343. The climb was 55 floors and each time you climbed up you were given a picture of a fallen Firefighter. When I got done doing 110 floors, there were 9 pictures left(all pictures had to be taken up for the climb to end). So I decided to climb the 55 floors one more time. The last picture I was assigned was Lt. Robert Wallace. I was very honored to carry your loved one's picture with me on this climb. My thoughts and prayers will forever be with your family.

My son attends Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, Maryland and every year since September 11, 2001 the school holds a Mass to honor and remember the victims of the tragedy that occured that day. This year a student at the school placed 2,998 American flags in front of the school, each with the name of someone who lost their life on 9/11. After the Mass, each boy was asked to bring home 2-3 flags and asked that the family keep these people in their special prayers. One of our flags had the name, Lt. Robert F. Wallace, NYFD. We just wanted you to know that we will never forget the heros that lost their lives that day -- even though we did not know them personally. We wanted you to know we are praying for Lt. Wallace and his family.

I had thought about you earlier in the day because I wondered whether you would get a kick out of me being in a marching band again. So - you gave me the answer when I looked in the mirror and saw you in the reflection.

Say hi to daddy and Danny for me.

When I think back to our High School days. I remember Bobby had a mental toughness that most of us did not possess.

It seems fitting he would choose to join the Bravest, and how brave he was, always moving forward.

I will remember Bob, forever young, our classmate, neighbor, friend.

I didn't know Bob well, but I want everyone to know he was funny, brave and confident as he led 226 into those towers. He knew what needed to be done that morning and we never doubted he would lead us in anything but an honorable direction.

Bob made me, a young, dumb fireman, think everything would be okay.

Watching Bob, Dave, Stan, and Brian walk off that morning was like watching a million cowboys walk off into a million sunsets...
I will never forget any of them.

Hey Bob,
I hope you and my Dad(Jerry) met up at the best bar in heaven. Tell him I love him and to never stop helping me drive(i drive like an idiot). You should be really proud of your family. Especially your daughter..She really became a great Mom thanks to watching you raise the boys. My sister Tricia still remembers the song you made up for her and Laureen. She smiles so big when she sings it! I've remembered you every 9/11 and always will. I always say a prayer for you and your family. Ill never forget how it hurt my Dad. Okay, now go make fun of him...God Bless and pinch Danny's cheeks for me..really hard!)

THIS IS THE FIRST I LOOKED ON THE WEB - GLAD THIS WAS HERE. I AM REMEMBERING BOBBY AND HIS SONS AT SHEA STADIUM ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE AND HOW INCREDIBLE TO BE IN THE SAME SEATING AREA IN SUCH A LARGE PLACE. I WISH I HAD TAKEN A PHOTO, BUT IT WAS A NICE GAME AND I WAS HAPPY TO SEE HIM IN HIS NATUAL STATE AS A FATHER TAKING HIS FAMILY ON AN OUTING. IT MUST HAVE BEEN A GREAT SUMMER TO HAVE HIM HOME. I MOVED FROM WOOHAVEN IN AUG 2001 - BEFORE THAT I PASSED HIM ON MY WAY TO THE J TRAIN AND HE WAS ALWAYS ON THE ROOF -WE CHATTED AND HE WAS CONCERNED FOR ME AS I HAD LOST MY SON IN SEPT OF 2000- HE WAS AT THE WAKE BACK THEN SO I WAS GLAD HE MET MY SON. I HAVE 3 DOLLS IN HONOR OF MY SON JOE, BOBBY AND THE MAN MY SON WAS CLOSEST TO. BOBBY HAS A FIREMAN OUTFIT AND A BASEBALL ONE. I HAVE PUPPETS TOO- A CONSTRUCTION WORKER, FIREMAN AND DOCTOR.
THIS COMFORTED ME. I HOPE GENE IS AND THE CHILDREN - HIS FOLKS AND NANCY ARE O.K. WE ALL MISS HIM IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD- HE WS A TRUE FRIEND OF ALL WITH LOVE AND GOOD MEMORIES AND THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THIS CITY AND YOUR SACRIFICE - YOUR FRIEND BARBARA

Dear Bob,
Today is September 11, 2007. It's hard to believe that so much time has gone by. Today the anniversary is different. My husband, Jerry Kettrick is not here missing you as he always did on this day because he is there with you. He talked about you and the good times you shared together so often. To us you are a hero. Jerry fought a courageous battle against cancer and passed away on July 19 and we miss him dearly. But I know in my heart that he's with you and our family who passed before him. Allie, Tricia and I remember you in our prayers.
God Bless you and your family.

In memory of Lt. Robert F. Wallace (FDNY)
Sept. 11th 2001
~Always remembered and never forgotten!"~

Greetings from
Firefighter poet Hartmut Reinsch
Toronto / CANADA

br>Tribute to Firefighters of FDNY!

In the battle against the beastly fire...
They stay together, ready to fight!
To help all the victims of every accident,
committed to rescue, by day and by night.

These are the courageous Firefighters,
In their cities and towns of every land.
They stand together as really true friends,
Routinely they're all working hand in hand.

Everyone of them looks after the other,
Their brotherhood knows no borders...!
They are ready to help in their unselfish way,
Without fear, they follow their orders!

Many of them gave their lives in New York,
On September the eleventh, two thousand and one...!
Firefighters everywhere will remember that day,
And their feelings of loss will never be gone.

Written by Hartmut Reinsch

May we always remember their sacrifice,
in their quest to help and save the lives of innocent victims,
on that tragic day of Sept. 11. 2001 in New York City, USA.

A word after..., from "ground zero!"

What we are left with,
surrounded by death and fear,
is our sense of loyalty and of duty...
which calls upon us
to place a shining beacon of hope in this world,
and to entrust the universal darkness
to the light of God.

Hey Bobbby,

Today marks the 6th year anniversary of when I saw you last.
I'm so glad you came to the party that day and will never forget that you were the last to leave.
That meant so much to me. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I still have the roses you gave me.

God, I miss you.

I'll be hanging out today with your grandchildren and will give them extra TLC for you. Rocco has your nose - he's so cute.

I love you so much and can still hear your voice and laughter.

Talk to you soon.

Love,

Liza
