Noel Foster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 28, 2001.
Blue Eyes and Red Cars
Everything was going so great for Noel J. Foster. He and his wife, Nancy, were extremely in love. They had just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with a two-week trip out West. Both the children were in school, with the youngest, Nicole, 5, having just started kindergarten on Sept. 6. The family had bought a house in Bridgewater, N.J., and Mr. Foster, 40, had fixed up every room but one. His wife just bought a new car.

It was as life should have been for a young couple in America. Mr. Foster was a vice president with Aon Corporation on the 99th floor of 2 World Trade Center. "They were at a perfect time in their life," said Peggy Oblack, Mrs. Foster's sister. "Things were really good."

Mrs. Oblack admired her sister's husband. He had blue eyes. He loved music. He was full of fun. He loved red cars. He always had a project going. "He was a wonderful family man," said Mrs. Foster. "He loved spending time with his wife and kids on the weekends. The beach, the boardwalks, the arcades."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 26, 2001.

Noel J. Foster, 40, always had a smile

When the hijacked jetliners slammed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, Noel J. Foster lagged behind to help a colleague with a broken leg down the 99 flights.

Several witnesses told Mr. Foster's family they saw him on the 65th floor of the South Tower, still aiding the man.

Others told Mr. Foster's wife they saw him on the 40th floor.

Cell phone records show Mr. Foster tried to call home, but the calls never got though.

Mr. Foster, 40, of Bridgewater was a vice president and producing broker for Aon Re Inc. in Two World Trade Center.

Mr. Foster leaves behind his wife of 10 years, Nancy; and daughters Megan, 8, and Nicole, 5.

His mother, Marion Foster of Colts Neck, said her only child may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

"He always had a smile. He was always looking at both sides of the story. And he was always tolerant," she said.

Learning of her son's selfless act came as no surprise, she said. "That's just the way he was."

Mr. Foster enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, tennis and spending time with his family.

At age 4, Mr. Foster's father, James McDonough died. At 8, his mother remarried and her husband, John Foster, adopted Noel.

At age 11, Mr. Foster joined the New York Military Academy, where he learned to ride horses and once represented the school's mounted unit during an assembly at Madison Square Garden. He was an ROTC cadet and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1980.

After earning a bachelor's degree in journalism and political science from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., he entered the insurance industry, working for several firms before landing at Aon in 1997.

His mother recalled one very memorable "project" that was attempted in late July -- a sand castle that she and her son worked on as the family enjoyed a day on the beach in Long Branch.

While Foster's children and their cousins quickly lost interest in the castle, the day turned out to be one Marion Foster will always remember.

Everybody was happy and laughing, she said. The clan ended the day with a fine supper at a seafood restaurant Foster counted as one of his favorites.

"He was a very good son," she said.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Shrine of St. Joseph in Stirling.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Megan and Nicole Foster Education Fund, P.O. Box 181, Martinsville, N.J. 08836.

On the approaching anniversary of 9/11, I felt this post would be timely, especially honoring the passing of one who was so revered by the NYMA family.
"We are all here for a micro instant. We don“t fret about the eternity which preceded us, and we obsess about the eternity to follow. Yet, in the 4fh dimension of time, each moment is also an eternity. For us, mere mortals, the shame is when we waste those moments, as the sum total reverberates forever, happy or sad, as it emanated from the beginning. It is not how long we live which matters, but rather how we live."
On behalf of myself, and the Regiment of Graduates, his many friends, students, fellow alumni, instructors, and admirers, I would like to extend again our deepest condolences on your loss. Noel was revered by his peers, especially his instructors and fellow graduates of the class of 1978, at the Academy, he earned lifelong respect and admiration of all whom encountered him. His undying support, guidance, and friendship was akin to a lantern in the night. May you be comforted, as we will be, and have been, with fond memories of his friendship and love.

Dear Nancy, Megan and Nicole: On 9/10/2010 a student at my son's school: Mt. St. Joseph Xavarian HS in Baltimore, MD, placed over 1000 flags each with the name of a 9/11 victim at the entrance to the school. It was an awesome sight as we all dropped off our son's that morning. Each student was encouraged to pick a flag to bring home to pray for with their families. I was Blessed to have received the flag for Noel J. Foster... a man, from the eulogies I have read, I wish I could have known. Many prayers for you three ladies.

As I look at your pictures, sometimes I can't help but cry. As little as I was I always remember you. The way you had that loving smile. I'm eleven now and I can't help but miss you. I'm crying as I type this, but now I understand why. You never came home, and now I know why. I love you so much and I will never forget you. Mom and Meg are doing well so is Pop Pop and I. I have 2 cockatiels, Sweetie and Tweety. I found Tweety and I think he resembles you. I'll always miss you and love you. Espeically on 9-11.

I met Noel through our mutual friend, Roger Smith, when I visited Roger in New York in the late 1980s when I was a poor former student. He was the sort of person that one immediately warms to. We went on a booze cruise on the river (always a Bacardi Gold for Noel, as I recall), and ironically we also spent a great evening at the Windows on the World at the WTC. When I needed somewhere to stay for a few days he immediately volunteered to put me up and was a great host. Nothing was too much trouble. A few years later I was delighted when he came over to London. With Roger and some other pals we spent an afternoon watching the annual Oxford/Cambridge Boat race. That was the last time I saw that ever present smile. God bless.

May God bless your family. After reading the news shortly after the trajedy, I was brought to tears. I'll never forget Noel's quick wit, intelligence, and general kindness. Many moons ago, we were fraternity brothers at Moravian (79-81). Although most of us went our separate ways after college, I always felt someday we would cross paths again; perhaps in the afterlife.

Well it has been a year since this awful tragedy and not a day goes by that I don't think of my old friend. I am sorry we didn't stay close or that I have never met his lovely wife and daughters but there was no one like him. Noel J. was what a true friend was and an extraordinary person. He is loved and missed by many but is at peace and watching over Nancy and the girls. May His peacefulness help them in their years ahead. God Bless you Noel J. and your family too.

They passed out braceletts at school today, each contained a name of a victim of September 11th. I reached in a basket and grabbed mine and it read, " Noel J. Foster". I took my seat and wondered what kind of person he was, I went online and read that he was a loving father, a hard worker, and a devoted family member. It brought me to tears to think that this great guy was no longer with us anymore, and I just wanted to let Mrs. Foster, Megan and Nicole know that I am so sorry and that I have been praying for y'all today. I know God is with you and that Noel is watching over you everyday!

Since our days at LDG, we clicked in business and more importantly, friendship. Ironically, our paths crossed again at AON where we worked together and played some so-so golf together. I will always enjoy and remember those great times. And on this anniversary, I pray you are in a wonderful place only you deserve.

I didn't know Noel well
But the void his leaving
The insurmountable grieving
It's not hard for me to tell
He made a difference while he was here
Especially to those who held him dear
He knew what life was all about
He loved and laughed and cared
Of that I have no doubt
And when he meets up with those closest to his heart
It will be like they were never apart.

Noel John Foster beloved by his mother Marion and father John Foster. Noel attended St. Andrews Catholic School, New York Military Academy and graduated from Moravian College. He completed his ROTC program while in college. By chance his life led him into the Insurance Business and he rose to be a Vice President of AON Corporation(Health Division).

His parents were very proud of his accomplishments. His mother remembers him as a dovoted son in many ways and Noel had a deep respect for his natural father James. In his young school years Noel enjoyed American History and always won medals on the subject. He was a good horseman and rode with the NYMA at Madison Square Garden several times. He enjoyed Tennis, swimming and was a so-so golfer. He had a great love for animals which his daughter Nicole has seems to have inherited. He was very charitable toward all who knew him especially with his mother who when she was so very ill he was at her side every day until she recovered. Over 250 people attended his memorial service where many wonderful things were said about him. When the awful tragedy at the WTC occured he made sure that everyone in his division left before he did while he stayed to help a colleague down from the 99th floor of Bldg. 2 they reached the 65th floor and from there none of his associates saw either of them again. At 30 he married his beloved wife Nancy and they had two adorable daughters.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
