Debbie Mannetta Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 29, 2001.
Knowing What Is Important
Debbie and Kenny Mannetta had what they wanted. Their only aspiration was to keep it. "We had both lost parents," said Mr. Mannetta, a police sergeant on the Upper West Side. "We wanted to see our children grow up."

Their home was a brown Cape in Islip, on Long Island, where they strolled after dinner with 1-year-old Ashley and 3-year-old Jessica. Since Mrs. Mannetta was working part time at Carr Futures, they arranged their schedules so one or the other was home with the girls. Every summer, they vacationed at a lakeside family camp in New Hampshire. "People asked: 'Why go to New Hampshire every year?' 'Why go to the same restaurant?' " he said. "Because we knew what we liked and did it."

Both were unabashedly sentimental, becoming weepy at the sight of Jessica at nursery school or their hundredth viewing of "On Golden Pond." "We're here today, together.' " Mr. Mannetta said. "We knew what was important. Until Sept. 11th turned my home into a house."

Another year of being deprived of Debbies presence as she walked around the neighborhood with her girls. Always smiling and waving and stopping to pet or hug my dog Curly who loved her back. The girls are grown now, Kenny did a fine job and I no longer have my Curly, but life goes on. But not the same and not the way we would have chosen it. We have no choice but to accept what has happened and go on. Dear DebbIe and Kenny, Jessica and Ashley, we are so sorry you did not get to live the life that you were supposed to live. But I know that with your Father you are living a beautiful, full and loving life and your Mother is watching over you. Your Parents are both holding you close to them.

We remember Debbie very well. She was very friendly. Her picture is out as it is every September 11. We occasionally see Kenny and the girls, who are now young women, walking in our neighborhood. I don't have words to express my sorrow and grief over her murder. I wish happiness and peace to all the families and friends who lost loved ones on September 11. We will never forget them.

You were my cousin. We never met but I saw things you had written to my mother and loved you for them. You made her less lonely and gave her a sense of family. Your mother was my big cousin, whom I adored. Like her, you were beautiful and gentle, I think. All I have are a couple of emails from you and the hope, now gone, that we would meet someday. I love you and will never forget you. Somehow the light that you were still shines.

I wrote this for you Debbie, 10 years ago.

We will always remember your smiling face,
Your sense of humor, your warm embrace,
Your love for life your spirit strong,
We ask ourselves, how will we go on?
You will always shine bright in what you have left behind,
In your litle girls eyes, we will find....
Calmness, Strength, a part of you.
This will give us the faith in what we shall do.
I'll miss the talks, the times, the laughter you gave.
We all have something special from you in our hearts to save.
So the gifts you have left in our souls will remain, and at times they may ease some of the pain.
The memories we have are here to stay, No one can take them away.
So dance with the angels in heaven above,
A paradise you have found,
A much greater love.

In our hearts forever,

Cousin Sherry

Like a flood I remembered meeting her when Jessica & Andrew were in the same class, talking and hanging out during the school functions....mostly her smile filled my memories!

All my love to you! I will ALWAYS remember Debbie!!!

Dear Kenny,
Just wanted you know that your doing a fabulous job with the girls. You put many women to shame with your intuition, and commitment to your family. Debbie is very proud as well, as I'm sure she's found ways to let you know along the way. You have made it so, that no matter what turns life takes for the girls, they will always have deeply embedded within them, fond, loving memories of their mother. And that is largely because of you. Always remember, Life is for the living, go, live...... remember. I'm always here for you and the girls, Love you all.

For she's an angel up above.
Who brought us laughter and made us feel loved.
She made us smile, but then brought us to tears, but we'll see her again in the coming years.
So God give us strength, help us to be strong, give us the courage so that we may carry on.
And until the next time when we meet again, tell her we love her, Debbie, our friend.

I hope this finds you, Jessica & Ashley well. I think of you and Debbie often. Not long before 9/11 we made contact with each other and I saw beautiful pictures of your angels. She told me she had started working part time. I still cannot believe 5+ years later that she is gone.
