Dear family and friends of James Leahy, It is truly a testament of love when one gives up his life to save others so that they may live. He's presence is certainly missed. Draw comfort knowing that he is peacefully resting. Waiting for the day when all will be reunited in a world of peace.

James – as another 9/11 goes by, I just want you and your family to know that even as time passes, good memories linger keeping us going and giving us hope and inspiration. From all the caring comments posted about you, I can see you were surrounded by good friends and the love of family. I’m certain you are now walking a beat on the streets of Heaven and watching over us all. Please save a seat in Roll Call for me.

I came to Washington DC May of '01 as a peer counselor for C.O.P.S. and had the extraordinary privilege to be the escort for James' wife and his children.
I came to know and deeply respect him thru them and still carry the dual pin (6th prcnt./badge 8943) with me.
I lost contact with his wife over the years but hope she and the children are finding peace and stability.
As a 35 year veteran of law enforcement, I honor his service and sacrifice, and that of all the fallen officers each Sept. 11th, as I am today. May he and the others all rest in peace.

My family and I recently visited New York and came across James P Leahy Street. Since we share the same last name we decided to look up the reason for the street name.
James's is a very moving story and our hearts go out to his family who've clearly lost a fantastic guy. God bless you all.

DEAR JAMES, GOD I MISS YOU SO MUCH. SIX YEARS AGO WE PUT YOU TO REST. AND FIVE YEARS AGO WE HAD A NEW ADDITION TO OUR FAMILY, MY DAUGHTER GIANNA. YOU ARE IN MY THOUGHTS EVERYDAY. I LOVE YOU.

To The Leahy Family,
My brother used to work with Jimmy at the 6th precinct and I met him briefly when he picked up my brother on his way to work. Six years following 9/11, I've discovered this site that honors the heros of that tragic day, and six years later, I still think of this nice person I met who served as a mentor to other police officers and was a great friend. The events of that day were told to me by my brother and I know that Jimmy was a true hero. Please know that there are people who are still thinking of all of you now. You will always be in our hearts and prayers Jimmy, and your family as well.

Jimmy;
I just became aware of this site recently, but I've always been aware of what a great guy you were. I was assigned to an election post on Madison Street, a couple hundred yards away from the WTC on that dreadful day, hoping that no one I knew was inside those towers. I was sickened to learn on Sept. 12th that you and Danny Richards, my friends and former co-workers, were still unaccounted for.
As much as we all needed you then, it seems on Sept.11,2001 that God decided he needed you guys more. Rest in peace, old friends; we all miss you....

I am also a wife of an NYPD police officer and remembered your name while watching television this afternoon. My heart breaks for you and your children. I don't know if I'd be strong enough to survive and you, however, are. You must be a very strong woman to get out and speak of your husband and smile. I'm sure you have many wonderful memories you'll cherish as we all should. God bless you all each and every day.

I was briefly engaged to Jimmy's brother, Arthur, and we lived upstairs from his family. My fondest memory of him was when I stopped by to drop off his mail and his door was open - he was hanging around with the boys in nothing but his undies. It was a classic "oops" moment and I felt so bad - he turned bright red! I will always remember him for the wonderful father he was and the caring individual he was to everyone. I'm not surprised he ran into a burning building. This was Jimmy's character. Dependable, responsible and considerate to friends and strangers alike. I hope that his reunion with his father is a peaceful one. Love and well wishes to his family - Marcella, Jimmy Jr.,Danny & John.
Arthur - I think of you every time I think of Jimmy. I cried not only for his loss but also because I couldn't be there for yours. You are always in my thoughts and memories.

My sympathy to the Leahy family. My son Vinny was in the 6th Pct before being transferred to the 33 Pct as a Sargeant. I was fortunate to meet Jimmy, and hear my son tell me what a great guy he was. There are no words to express the horror and senseless tragedy of the loss of a sweet and loving human being. Maybe someday when we all meet in that better place it will be revealed to us. Again my deepest sympathy to the Leahy family, and all who respected and loved him. God Bless. Barbara Scotto Manchester, N.J.

I am a senior attending a small, private, Christian school in Oregon. For one of the chapels, we had a police officer/fireman come and speak on Sept. 11 of this year. Instead of passing his hat around and asking us to put something in it, he asked if we would take a picture of one of the many victims of the attacks, and I randomly chose James Leahy's picture. I have been praying for his family, and those that loved him since I got it. I decided to see what kind of information I could find on him and his family. After reading some articles, I realized what kind of a difference he made to so many people. May the Lord greatly bless his family!!!

Hello. My name is Kathi Petti, and I got involved in the United in Memory Quilt Project, out of long beach California. I lost my brother in law, Chuck Costello, and my sister asked me to do Chuck’s block, and I was so glad to be involved. I went to California to
participate in the panel assembly of the 125 panels (25 squares per panel). While I was there, I looked through the names yet to have been made, and I chose your lost loved one, James. I hope to send the photo of the block on the next post, but if I am unable to post it, please feel free to contact me via e-mail and I will send you a photo of the block I
made for him. The web site for the project is easily found under keyword ‘United in Memory’. They will eventually have all the blocks in alphabetical order, but my blocks
are not in as yet. So, keep checking on that. Also, watch to website for when they show the quilt in NYC. They are working hard to get a place to show the quilts. God Bless.

Dear Mrs. Leahy,
I didn't really know your son, but he used to stop in to NYU Law School where I work, and everybody remembers him as being a really nice guy. After reading about his life, I'm truly in awe of all that he did - a hero among heroes. I saw you being interviewed on tv at the ceremony honoring the police officers at the memorial wall. He would be so proud of you - you show such dignity and beauty. God bless, and take care. Kris Dalman, NYU Law School Library.

We Remember Them
From the Gates of Repentance
New Union Prayer Book for the Days of Awe
Author Unknown
At the rising of the sun and at its going down,
We remember Them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of Winter,
We remember Them.
At the opening of buds and in the rebirth of Spring,
We remember Them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of Summer,
We remember Them.
At the rustling of leaves and the beauty of Autumn,
We remember Them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends,
We remember Them.
As long as we live, he too will live;
For they are a part of us, as we remember Them
When we are weary and in need of strength,
We remember Them.
When we are lost and sick at heart,
We remember Them.
When we have joys we yearn to share,
We remember Them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make,
We remember Them
When we have achievements that are based on his,
We remember Them.
As long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are a part of us, as we remember Them.
In Loving Memory of Police Office James P. Leahy,
God Bless His family
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I am James' sister Denise. I just wanted everyone to know that James is home with us now. He was recovered on Tuesday and my family is relieved to have him back. I would also like to thank everyone for their support. The Leahy family has suffered two tramatic losses in our lives. Two special men tragically died in the prime of their lives. My father Arthur and now my brother James. We are a close family trying to make sense of such a loss. Two men dedicated to their families and to helping people. Two men we never had a chance to say good-bye to.

I had the privelege to ride in the same patrol car with Jimbo for 6 years. He is like the older brother I never had. I call him the total package, he was caring, a fighter, strong and intelligent. We thank James for dedicating his life to helping and protecting others as a police officer. Such dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. We appreciate he sharing his heart with so many people through the years. May his kindness, courage, life and love continue living through those who love him and through those who were helped by him. We are deeply sorry for your loss of James. Our hearts cry with you.

We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
