Thomas Cullen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
True to His Calling
In the weeks before his death, as a member of Squad 41 in the Bronx, Thomas Cullen, 31, studied for the Fire Department's lieutenant's exam. But even without a test ahead of him, his wife, Susan, said, his idea of pleasure reading was an abstruse volume about confined rescue or some other technical aspect of firefighting. If he worked in a kind of building he was unfamiliar with, he would read up on its structural peculiarities.

The couple met in 1992 at Fordham University, where Tom Cullen took the fire- fighters test and the law boards as a senior. He came from a family of lawyers, but "fire was his true love," Mrs. Cullen said. He made perfect scores on the exam, she said, but then had to wait four years for an opening, "buying time" as a CPR instructor and a dean of discipline at a public school.

Firefighter Cullen's 2-year-old son, Tom, shares the passion and already can distinguish one kind of truck from another. Father and son also shared a love of electric trains. Many nights, after the toddler went to sleep, his father would add a new twist or turn to the tracks on the living room floor. Mrs. Cullen continues the tradition, but with less panache. "Lucky for me he's not picky," she said.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 24, 2001.

THOMAS PATRICK CULLEN III, 31, of New York, a firefighter for the New York Fire Department, would wait until his 2-year-old son and namesake would go to sleep, then rearrange the toy train track in the family living room. "He wanted Tom to be excited when he came downstairs every morning," said Cullen's wife, Susan. "He spent his day thinking about how he would design it. He would always say, 'I can't wait for Thomas to go to bed. I have a good idea for a new track.'"

My deepest sympathies go out to Thomas' family. I was fortunate enough to hike a local mountain the same height as the twin towers in his honor during a 9/11 ceremony over the weekend. We had a few hundred volunteers including the local police and fire fighting team involved. Each volunteer received a card with the picture and name of the fallen hero. I received Thomas. Even 3,000 miles away we still feel the grief from that day and do our best to honor those that save and protect.

I visited the memorial for the first time yesterday and took one photo. It had Thomas' name visible, so I felt I should read about his life and put the story to the name. My heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.

I was in a Stair climb for the firefighters that did not make it home on 9/11. We got to pick who we were doing the climb for and for some reason his picture and name kept sticking out to me. So I did the 110 flights in his honor. Do this climb for him made me grow a greater bond to firefighting and my honor and respect grew alot not only for this man but for the others that didnt make it home on Sept. 11 2001.

I never knew Thomas, but I attended his funeral as an honor guard from another FD. We attended 5 funerals that weekend, one of the hardest weekends of my life. I cried again on 9/11 this year.

At Thomas's funeral, you handed out laminated photos with a poem on the back. That card is still with me today. It sits on my desk as a constant reminder to always look at the big picture. He never came home that night. No matter how bad my day, I will get to go home tonight.

God Bless and always remembering.

Thank you so much for having this Guest Book. I was selected in 2001 to light a candle for Thomas each year on Sept. 11th. I have honored that commitment each year and I pray for him, his spirit and his family each time the candle is lit and throughout that day. His wife and son will always be in my heart. God Bless you all who were his family and friends.

On 09/08/13 I participated in a Memorial Stair Climb in San Diego. We were each given a 'badge' with a name, picture & information on one of the brave first responders who gave their lives to try to save others on September 11, 2001.
My hero was Thomas Patrick Cullen III and he will be in my prayers forever.
Thank you to his family for providing the world with such a brave man.

Hello
My name is Colleen Maus and today my sister received Thomas' name at school to wear all day long. She contacted me in my first year college because every year I look up the name I receive and search for their background. I just wanted to say thank you to Thomas for his duty and thank you to his family as well. Although I didn't know him, I know he was a treasure. Thank you again. Thomas and his family are in my prayers today and always.

From what I have read, Thomas sounds like an amazing and smart person and loved by all his family and friends. I'm very sympathetic to your loss and God bless you. I will think of Thomas and all the firefighters who gave up their lives to save others when I see a 9/11 memorial again. I pray for all his family and friends. To the family of this brave young man, my name is Thomas Patrick Cullen IV, I live in Hawaii and first heard of the tragedy of a firefight with my same name, a month after 9/11. For some reason it made me feel alittle more connected to this horrific event, from over 5,000 miles away. My stepson Micah is a firefighter here on Kauai, and his mother and I are so very pround of him. If any of the family of this wonderful young man, ever visit Kauai, it would be an honor to meet you and invite you to a family Luau here at our home. Tomorrow on the ten year anniversary, and our thoughts and prayers will be with your family, God bless you all. The Cullen Family, Kauai, Hawaii

I had the extreme honor of knowing Tom, if only for a short while. I am his hairstylist, & was shocked when I had heard Tom was among the victims of the WTC. I had only seen him about 2 weeks earlier...

Let me tell you - there are few men who love their families like Tom did. Susan is a wonderful woman... so strong ( I envy her strength) & his son is one of the most beautiful children. I have the pleasure of seeing them every few weeks... and it tears my heart every time I see them to think of how their lives have changed. I have Tom's photo on my mirror at work, along with a beautiful picture of the Towers. Every day I think of him, & all the precious lives that were lost. It makes me so appreciative of what I have... My husband & baby are the most important things in my life... now, more than ever.

Make sure you tell your loved ones that they are just that... LOVED.

Tom, you'll always be in my prayers... & I'll always be there for Susan & Thomas...

God Bless You All....

Words seem so inadequate to try to describe the feelings of loss, the emptiness, and the sorrow you must all be feeling, even a year after this great tragedy. As a fire chief and a father, I pray that I will never have to experience the loss of my son or the loss of one of my firefighters. But know that the dedication to duty those that perished at the WTC displayed has not been lost, it lives on in every firefighter, every police officer, and every medical tech.. I know this because I see it every day, those people going out and doing a job that takes a very special kind of person to do. And after reading about Tom and meeting his dad this week, I know that he was and always will be a very special person. Not just a firefighter, but a son, a brother, a husband, and a father. Please accept the condonlances of myself and the Lloyd Volunteer Fire Rescue, the citizens of Lloyd,Fl. and the citizens of a greatful nation. And thank you for allowing us the opportunity to share this very special time with you.

Sincerely,

Listening to the radio in my office on September 11 2002 I heard Thomas Patrick Cullen III's name read aloud at the Ground Zero Memorial service. My first reaction was that it couldn't possibly be the same Tommy Cullen who I remembered as a little boy. Then I grabbed that days NY Times special section and when I saw his photo I knew.

It has been many years since my days at Breezy and the many happy times I shared with the Cullen family; and the later times when visiting Breezy with my own children we often met up with young Tom, his parents and little sister Rita.

I am so deeply saddened by your family's enormous loss and the pain you have suffered .

My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with you.

a feature on the FDNY football team

this past week.

Tommy Cullen was a valuable member

of that squad

The film portrayed Tommy as the consummate friend, father and husband

I had the good fortune of knowing Tommy in his early years as a high school student as his coach and teacher.

It seems like yesterday that Tommy

and his best buddy Pags would drop by to see me in the athletic office.

The two of those guys were a guaranteed laugh.

Watching the show a year after 9/11

arose in me anger but also a feeling of respect for a young man who packed an awful lot of life in

to his way too few years with us on earth

God Bless Tommy and his family and friends.

It's with unbelievable sorrow that I write this. When I first heard about Tom. I thought no way, it can't be him. "He is a lawyer". Unfortunately I was wrong.

I was a good friend to both Tom (little Tom) Cullen and his sister Rita back in the summers at Breezy. I was very shocked when I found out that he died. Its true that I hadn't thought of that name for some time, but now he guarantees that an event that severely hurt this country will forever personally hurt me. He was always a lovely, exuberant young man, and now he always will be.

September 10, 2002

I made an entry last Nov. about the Mercy Band with the name Thomas P. Cullen, III on it that my sister gave to me as an early Christmas present, never knowing just how much that bracelet would come to meann to me.

On Dec. 23, my sister was on her way home to NC from GA with her family when a lady on I-85 lost control of her car, became air born and crashed first into the door of the car where my sister was. This split second in time caused a 6 car pile up, with many injuries. My sister was taken to the hospital as a "Jane Doe", her husband was transported to another hospital, and her son to a 3rd hospital. I called the hospitals to find my sister and had to ID her by the Mercy Bracelet she was wearing. What I felt waiting to hear if she was alive or dead.....I can only imagine how all those with loved ones involved in 9/11 must have felt. Pam's left side of her face was crushed and she was in a coma for 2 weeks and has lost the sight in her left eye. We are only 17 months apart and are like twins, I can't imagine life without her. We were lucky, because she is alive. The closeness and bond we share (especially now) cannot be described! I have worn my Mercy Bracelet every day since she gave it to me. It is my physical reminder of just how fragile our time on earth is. I pray for the Cullen family, and for all families everyday. Please, remember to tell those you love just what they mean to you EVERY day, never forget. God bless America and its heros. My best to you, Mrs. Cullen, thank you. With gratitude to all the heros of 9/11 Patricia Bondor

To the Cullen family: First, our blessings to you and thank you for raising such an outstanding young man. Second, I am e-mailing you to find out if Thomas was related to Assemblyman T.P. Cullen. My grandfather, Adolph Paul Brown, had a newspaper clipping of T.P. Cullen, who was an attorney in New York. Mr. T.P. Cullen was my Grandfather's nephew. My grandfather's sister, Katie Cullen was T.P.'s mother. We have a picture of T.P. Cullen and there is quite a resemblance to Thomas Cullen's picture. We are deeply sorry for our nation's loss of Thomas. We thank him for dedicating his life to help, rescue, and care for others as a firefighter. Such a dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May Thomas's enjoyment for trains, his courage, life and love live on in his son, Tom, and all who love him. May the warm memories of times shared with Thomas lighten the sorrow in your hearts. May you always feel the warmth of his love surround you. Our hearts cry deeply for America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I received a "mercy band" bracelet from my sister for an early Christmas present. What a gift! Do you know about these bands? It's a sterling silver band with your husband's name on it and that he was a fireman. By wearing the bracelet it will remind me to pray for his survivors (you and his son). I read his biography and was so touched by the story about his son and the train. I have two children, my youngest is a boy, and I am a single mother. I just wanted you to know that you and your son will be in my family's prayers daily. Thank you for the great sacrifice made by you and your family. God bless you. Patricia Bondor, Clayton, NC

To the Cullen family, especially Sue and Thomas,

It breaks my heart to know that someone as caring and special as Tom is gone. He was a wonderful friend to me in college, and I will always remember him as a true friend and hero. I hope that his wonderful sense of caring lives on in his young son. No words can express the sadness that I feel for all of you right now, but Tom is an angel now and he is looking over all of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
