Mauricio Gonzalez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
A Fan Named Moejiggy

Mauricio Gonzalez had such skill on the basketball court that he earned the name Moejiggy from other players, from Greenwich Village to Harlem to his native Washington Heights, said his wife, Evan van Dommelen-Gonzalez. "Basketball was his passion," Ms. van Dommelen-Gonzalez said. "He played on every city court and everybody knew him."

A New Yorker through and through, Mr. Gonzalez was a Knicks fan. "He was almost in tears when Patrick Ewing was traded. He was looking forward to this season to see what was going to happen with Michael Jordan's comeback. I watched opening night without him and cried," his wife said.

He was priming his 15-month-old daughter, Nina, to play for the Women's National Basketball Association, Ms. van Dommelen- Gonzalez said. "She has all the right moves."

Mr. Gonzalez was a carpenter. He was installing furniture at Aon, in 2 World Trade Center, on Sept. 11.

Dear Mauricio...So we arrive to the 21st anniversary of your departure from us. May Our Great Lord Jesus bless your soul. I remember like today many years back when you were 4-year old living at 586 W 178th St. Manhattan. Your lovely, full of life smile. Sweet personality. Friendly and outgoing. Yes, that's what we remember about you. Blessings! Luis y Melida Lucia Ortega...

My mother always spoke highly of you. She always talked about how you two were close friends. Every year I watch the 9/11 memorial remembrance for her, because she can´t even bear to hear your name. I may have not gotten the opportunity to meet you, but from the memories my mom tells me about, it´s just as if I´ve met you. May you rest in peace, and may your family always be blessed. Noemi Santiago will forever have you in her heart, and so will I.

Evan, remembering you, Nina and Mauricio today. Very painful to watch the TV coverage and am still so heartsick over your loss and thousands of others. Wishing you and Nina a happy life with warm memories you will carry of Mauricio. I never met him but I'm sure he was a very special person who died so young. I know he will remain in your hearts forever - until you all are reunited again.

Moe, I still can't believe you are gone, I still think you are around. Every time I go into the Villalegre and see your picture there that is when it hits me.. I can't even imagine how it would be if you would have been around, still bragging about your beautiful daughter, and how you were going to keep her away from Marc-Armani.. Till this day I could've never thought I actually knew someone who was made an angel on that god-awful day, I met a girl in 1997 who was best friends with Evan, through them I met Moe. He was very instrumental in providing me guidance to be very close to this extraordinary girl, he had a wonderful personality, charm, a great smile, he was honest and above all he had a good heart.

For the short time we known each other I knew Evan had someone special, my heart goes out to his family, friends and the beautiful baby you and Evan have. I know you will look down on them from time to time.

Mojiggy,

I remember when we met. It was several years ago when several people from the block went to the lakes. From that day forward I knew that you had to be one of the coolest people on earth. God bless you for the joy that you brought to so many. Myself, along with the entire 180 street, miss you beyond what words would never be able to describe. Mojiggy forever!

I was saddened by the tragedy of 9/11, but I was devastated when I found out that moe was a victim. I met moe in washington heights in '93. He was friends with my older brother. As such he treated me like a lil sis. In between the teasing me at times he never stop being protective, caring and loving. I regret having lost touch with him because I surely missed out on having a great friend; but I thank God for have given me the pleasure to at least have know a great young man, who grew up into a wonderful husband and father. miss u moe.

To Mauricio's Family and Friends:

I am a stranger, just searching my name on google during an idle moment. I just learned that someone with my name tragically passed on in the 9/11 tragedy. Mauricio's write-up struck me not only because of the common name but also because I too share a passion for basketball and have a daughter. I'm sure that in a better world, he and I are brothers.

My best wishes to his family and friends.

To The family of
Mauricio Gonzalez....

Having known and worked with Mauricio's father, Angel for many years, the news that Angel had lost his son on Sept., 11, 2001, impacted us deeply.

Although we did not know Mauricio personally, I do remember him helping his father with work around the office. He was quite young then, about 11 or 12 years old. But even at that age, he impressed us with his diligence and hard work.

There was so much sadness and heartbreak on that day, that mere words and expressions of condolences can only temporarily dull the pain. But know this, that WHEN THE HEART GRIEVES OVER WHAT IT HAS LOST, THE SPIRIT REJOICES OVER WHAT IT HAS LEFT....

In our collective thoughts and prayers, Mauricio will live on.

I met Moe in '93-'94 when he used to work at Urban Office Products, I was a Sales girl and he gave me my first account with his company and we became instant friends. We would talk about basketball and the Knicks all the time. He had such a good sense of humor and a really good head on his shoulders. He was a good friend and a special person and I am glad that I had the privelege to know him. I would like to send out my deepest sympathies and condolences to his wife and family. God bless you.

Maurice, I will truly miss you and pray that you rest in peace. Until we meet again, Goodnight and God bless you.

Love Always,

Laurie.

I send my deepest sympathy to Moe's wife, child and family. I met Moe through my cousins from 178th St. in Washington Heights. We hang in front of the building when we didn't have anything else to do. He was a very sweet person. When I saw his picture in the news I could not believe it, I ran in to him the weekend prior to the attacks. When I went to visit my cousins it was confirmed to be by the murual done by the guys of the block in his name. I was in shock, I'm still am. I can't believe his gone. I know that from up above he blesses his family and friend. My message to his wife; I know its hard at this time of sorrow but Moe is with you in spirit and soul, through your child you will realize that he never left you. His at peace and looking over you and Nina. Don't dispair he is at a better place. keep strong for you little one and always keep her daddy's memories alive for her. If you need anything you could always count on me. I owe to Moe, he was a very good friend to me. Take care and God Bless you and Nina.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Mauricio. May his love of basketball, his life and love live on in those who love him. Such a cute nickname Moejiggy! Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Mauricio.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I was looking at the guest book of a relative of mine that passed away and I came across this name, when I looked in it and read the profile I came to realize that I went to Junior High School with Mauricio in Washington Heights, I can't believe that yet another person I know was taken from us by this tragedy. I have not seen or spoken to Mauricio since we were kids but my Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. As the mother of a 2 year old myself I especially feel for his wife and baby girl, be strong. Rest in peace Mauricio.
