Shevonne Mentis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 6, 2001.
The Youngest Grocer

At an age when most girls are focused on boys and lip gloss, 17-year-old Shevonne Mentis had not only decided that she wanted to go into business for herself, she had also opened her own grocery.

It was called Shevonne's Super Center. And from opening day, it was the talk of the little seaside town of Vryheid's Lust, Guyana. "Everybody in the neighborhood thought it was strange, a girl running a store," said her longtime boyfriend, Gary Garroway. "All the other shop owners were 45, 50 years old. But people kept pouring in."

She also ran a fleet of taxis. Mr. Garroway said she succeeded in business through a combination of toughness and sweets. "She was very strict, very formal about getting things done," he said. "But she had a very good relationship with children. She kept a wide range of confectionery, and the children would always come in after school."

In 1999, after six years at the helm of the Super Center, Ms. Mentis left her boyfriend in charge, joined her family in Bedford- Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and enrolled in a business management program at Borough of Manhattan Community College. She worked days as a clerk for a division of Marsh & McLennan to pay her tuition. Last Thursday, she would have been 26. Mr. Garroway closed Shevonne's Super Center to come to New York and attend her memorial, but promised that it would reopen soon. "We want that name to live on," he said.

Hi sis it's another year and the pain is no lesser than the year before. Our hearts aches for your smile, your laughter, your silly jokes and our family time. You taught us many things but you never taught us how to live without you for the rest of our lives. You were ripped from our lives too soon. Forever missing you. Until we meet again.

I don't know why you were taken from our family, but I wish everyday that goes by that I could of gotten one more kiss, one more hug, another church day with you. For years I thought I'd grown up on a lie, that any moment you would ring the door bell and say " Open up Sketel ". I love you with all my heart, and I promise that I will NEVER FORGET 9/11. Although, I did not know her personally, I ran 2 miles with her name pinned to my shirt. While I ran I wondered what she looked like, what kind of person she was, if she had any family. I went home and looked her up becasue I wanted to know more. I am inspired by the things she accomplished and the things she was in the middle of accomplishing. The world will miss out on such a special person and I'm honored to have her name pinned to my shirt.

I did not personally know Shevonne but today I paid my respects to her. I attend East Carolina University in North Carolina and in tribute to the 9/11 victims, an on campus organization made an individual bracelet for each of the victims of the 9/11 attacks. On my bracelet was Shevonne Mentis. When I returned home, I wanted to know about her so I Googled her name and have read wonderful things about her and how she was an inspiring individual. I am very sorry for the grief that her family has endured but I feel blessed to have been able to show, in a small way, that she will never be forgotten.

Shevonne and I shared some fond memories. She was indeed that friend who would put a smile on your face when you are sad. We share the same birth month (November), same class and school (St. Joseph's High), and did so many good and naughty things together in the short space of time that I've spent with her. No doubt that would still be the same had she survived. Shevonne is indeed missed, not only by myself, but by all her other friends and peers (Nancy, Tyefia, Derry, Melissa, and Rochelle, just to name a few). My condolences to her family and close relatives. May her soul rest in everlasting peace.

Heavenly Father, the death of our Dear Shevonne has filled our eyes with tears and our hearts with sorrow. As your children we want so much to say, "Not our will, but Thine be done," but at times we find it difficult to do. Forgive us and help us, we pray you, by your Holy Spirit, to accept Your ways as always best.Teach us not to mourn as those who have no hope. Wipe away the tears from our eyes that we may be able to see through the mist, beyond death and grave, to the resurrection and life assured by the glorious victory of our savior Jesus Christ over death and grave.

Shevonne Olicia Mentis was born to Myrtle Bazil and Aubrey Mentis on November 1st, 1975 in Guyana, South America. She was raised solely by her mother. She graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Georgetown, Guyana. She also attended Carnegie Cooking School. After graduation she became an entrepreneur managing a variety store. She then bought two cars and started to manage them as taxis. In July of 1999, Shevonne migrated to the United States to join her family. She resided at 365 Marion Street in Brooklyn with her sister Sharon Bazil until September 11th, 2001. She attended a GED program at LaGuardia Community College, took courses in computer and started working as a receptionist at Marsh & McLennan Companies, on the 93rd floor, in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Shevonne also enrolled herself at the Borough of Manhattan Community College and was starting her third semester in fulfilling her dream of a degree in Business Management. She worked very hard to maintain a high average while working full time. Shevonne had no children, but she loved to take care of her nieces and nephews. She loved to go to church on Sundays, was an excellent cook and had a very outgoing personality. She was very goal oriented and would have succeeded at whatever her ultimate dreams were. Shevonne was very fond of her little sister Bonita, and at one time acted as parent to her in the absence of her mother. Shevonne is dearly missed by her parents Myrtle Bazil and Aubrey Mentis. Her sisters Debbie Newton, Carlotta Phillips, Sharmine Mentis, Cheryl Bazil, Sharon Bazil, Michelle Mentis, Bonita Williams and Renatta Mentis. Her brothers Wesley Bazil, Aubrey Mentis Jr., and Gordon Bazil. Her best friends Abiola Hazel and Nancy. Her nieces Tacarra, Ayanna, Tagreia, Keshia, Tiffany, Nadatta, Jasmine, Janay, Shikia, Jamela, Dwyonita, Alliyah and LaBrea. Nephews, Andre, Anthony, Jamal, Michael, Justin, Gordon Jr., Anthony (sonny), Allan, Ashton, Amsry and Alonzo. Uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Her visit on this earth was brief but she has touch the hearts of almost everyone who knew her and even those she didn't know.

Sharon Bazil (sister).

We are very sorry for your loss of Shevonne. May her life and love live on through all who love her. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
