Terence Hatton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2001.
Knowing the Drill
Terence S. Hatton did not like surprises. A captain in the Fire Department, he took his squad to tour buildings when there were no smoke or flames, or people to rescue.

"He was very knowledgeable about the history of Manhattan and its buildings," said Alfred Benjamin, a firefighter who was a member of the captain's squad at Rescue Company 1 in Times Square. Captain Hatton was a 20-year veteran of the department.

The firehouse is an elite force of about 25 firefighters, whose mission is to perform rescues. It is one of the busiest houses in the city, with 10 runs a day -- very few of them are false alarms.

Captain Hatton, 41, once took his rescue team on a drill to a small theater on 43rd Street, off Eighth Avenue, so that they would know what to expect.

"The theater looks small from the outside, but it's a tremendous building," Mr. Benjamin said. "It has sub-cellars, and the performers have dressing rooms in one of the basements. We wouldn't have known that if we hadn't done the drill."

I will be in NYC for the NC to NYC Tunnels to Towers, supporting our Son Christopher Young in Sept. 2016. Our son is a firefighter for the Cary CD. In the 15 years since 9-11, I have never forgotten the story of Terry. As part of the 343 firefighters who perished that day, there is a story for each one. Why Terry 's story stays with me, I have no idea. May God Bless all of Terry 's family, especially his daughter.

My high school girl friends met in NYC for a reunion and we visited the memorial. I took this picture and we prayed and cried for all those lost. It was very moving to know the white rose is for his birthday and is done for all those gave their lives that day. We all wanted to know more about the man in the picture I took with his name and found online his story. Our thoughts and prayers to all his family and especially his little girl that never was able to hug her daddy.
Forever grateful,

Terry and I played football and hockey together. We were fraternity brothers in Alpha Omega Theta. Our parents spent many a day watching and driving us to hockey games in Farmingdale,, NY. Terry was a great guy. He was hardworking, determined, honest, and kind. I remember Terry when we went down to Florida to see Disney World with some other friends. We had a great time together and I still look at those pictures at times to remember those days ! God Bless Terry Hatton, The Hatton Family, and Those Who Serve Our Country...

I've known Terry since I was in 3rd grade. His brother Kenny was in my class. We lived two blocks apart and used to play Man Hunt in the neighborhood in the summer. Later in high school we became friends again. I was so sad to hear of his death and felt so bad for Grace and Mr. and Mrs. Hatton. I'll think of them often and certainly will be tomorrow.

Never Forgotten.
I have been given the extreme honor of the daily reminder of your legacy.
Last year, as a Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy, I was sent to training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas. I was paired up with my new partner; an explosive detection canine named after you.
Hatton is a vivacious, energetic, extremely hard working, often stubborn, water loving black lab.
I share her namesake's story with everyone I can. I am soo very proud to be blessed with this gift and hope to carry on your heroism in my job and life.
Thank you for your courage and inspiration!
God Bless your family and your memory.

The foe is beaten to his knees,
And triumph crowns the fight!
It sweeps the world from shore to shore,
By wave and wind 'tis flung,
It grows into a mighty roar
Of siren, bell and tongue.
Where our people knelt in fear,
They stand in joy today;
The hour of their redemption here,
Their feet on Freedom's way.

Being a fireman I come across a special show and couldn't help but stop and watch. It was an indepth story of Rescue 1. Cpt. Hatton and the brave men of the rescue company pulling people from a burning house. It stuck in my mind especially the fact everyone called him Cpt. Manhatton because he touch so many in the area he worked. Two weeks later was 9/11/01. the men of Rescue 1 are forever with me. I pray still to this day for the families of the 343.

I am a firefighter with Washington DC Fire Dept. At the time I was with another department but four of us wanted to do something. The only thing we could really do was attend three memorial services and one funeral. The funeral we attended was Captain Hattons. It was probably the most moving thing I have ever done in my life. I know this doesn't sound like a big deal but since his funeral I have become a firefighter in DC. I am a bagpiper with the DCFD pipes and Drums, And I am now assigned to Rescue 1 in DC. Captain Hatton is a legend in my book, and a big inspiration. I keep the program from his funeral on my wall in my basement at home. He is a man I never knew but will never forget.

To Captain Hatton's Family and Friends, I learned your story on 48 Hours in December 2001. I've wanted to sign this Guest Book for quite some time, but couldn't think of the right words until now. Recently, while browsing the Barnes & Noble website, I found the DVD In Memoriam: New York City 9/11/01. I borrowed the DVD from the library of the university where I work, and watched it several days ago. Beth, I appreciate your talking on camera about your loss. I have the greatest love and respect for firefighters and police officers because they not only risk their lives every day to protect people and property, they are also Samaritans when off duty. They are always looking to help someone in need--by raising money to pay medical bills, running a holiday toy drive, collecting food for soup kitchens and food pantries, donating their vacation time to work at a camp for children who have suffered burns, to name just a few of their charitable endeavors. My heartfelt thanks for sharing your grief--and for giving me this opportunity to say, "I care."

Every day I see Cpt. Hatton's name on my wrist. Many people ask about the small braclet that I wear daily, a small braclet but a big sacrifice, Terence will never see his wife Beth ever again, he will never see his daughter graduate from high school or college, see her get married or have children. All gave some but Terence Hatton gave all. The ultimate sacrifice, laying one's life down for another. It's what we do. So, people ask me about my small, silver colored braclet on my wrist, I tell them he is a hero. Never forget.

Dear Mrs. Hatton - We've never met, but I think about Terry quite often and I am so sorry for your loss. I was on the 63rd floor of WTC1 on 9/11 when the first plane struck.

While escaping the building via the stairwell, we met a group of firefighters from Rescue1 at approximately 9:12 on 20th floor as they made their way up the stairs to save as many people as possible. Terry was in the lead with his men - including Bill Henry, David Weiss and Joseph Angelini Sr - closely behind. Our brief encounter with these brave men was a tremendous comfort to all of us in the stairwell. They assured us that the path was clear below and to just be patient as we slowly worked our way out of harms way. Before they moved on, we were able to describe what we encountered on the floors above us and wished all of them good luck and Gods speed.

In the face of an exhausting climb and a situation that they new would not turn out well, their bravery was what stood out the most. This was a clear reflection of Terry's leadership. His youthful face shined with experience and leadership. He is a true Hero and I will always be thankful to him and the 342 fellow firefighters that gave their lives that day so that so many of us could get home to our families and loved ones.

While I know that nothing can fill the void left by Terry's passing, I am hopeful that you can find some comfort in knowing that his selfless bravery was saving lives right to the very end and will never be forgotten.

And on this 5th anniversary when I can hug my wife and now 6 and 8 year old children, I will always be grateful to the Heroes from Rescue 1.

All my best,

Steve Peck
