Phillip Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2001.
A Call Every Morning
Years ago, Phil Miller walked two hours from his home in Upper Manhattan across the 181st Street bridge to pick up his date in the Bronx because he could not afford the train and the cost of the date, too. He worked delivering newspapers so he would have enough money to take her to Greenwich Village, a big deal at the time.

After 33 years of marriage, Mr. Miller's devotion to his wife, Arlene, never wavered. Nor did his devotion to hard work, or long commutes. He was proud of being one of the youngest members of the Casualty Actuarial Society and of his position at Aon. In the summers, when the Millers left their home in Staten Island for their vacation home in the Poconos, Mr. Miller, 53, got up at 4 a.m. to take a bus to his office at the World Trade Center.

And each morning he would call his wife after he got to work, just to check in. On Sept. 11, he called from his office in the south tower. He told her he had seen the crash and was leaving; he got as far as the 78th floor.

Had he lived, the couple would have retired in four years to Orlando, Fla., near his daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters. Now Arlene Miller is moving south sooner than expected. "My windows face the World Trade Center; I can't stay here," she said. "He wouldn't have wanted it."

I would like to thank you all for the kind words and sentiments about my father. He was a very special man with a strong work ethic and a great sense of humor even during the toughest of times. It is those qualities that have guided me throughout my life. He loved being a grandfather and was robbed of that privilege too soon. I think of him when I am eating deli, watching a Yankee game or when golf plays on TV. If he were alive today, he would be spending the winter in his Florida home playing golf and cheering for the Jets - win or lose. Miss you dad. Keep cheering up above for our Yankees - maybe it will be their year!

I will never forget you or your funny sense of humor. You were a kind, loving and compassionate person. Thank you for allowing me to live in your house so that I could finish the school year. You always treated me like a daughter. You will forever be in my heart and in my thoughts and prayers. I see you still in the faces of your children and grandchildren. You were definitely taken way too soon. RIP

To the family of Phillip D. Miller,
I rode in a 911 motorcycle ride on August 18-21, 2011 I received a card with a name on it, that name was Phillip D. Miller. I rode from Shanksville to Washington then to Ground zero with that card attached to my windshield, it was an honor to ride in his memory and will ride every Sept. 11 forward with that card attached.
God bless,

Dear Arlene,

We moved into that row of houses on Fahy Avenue in Staten Island within weeks of each other. I can't tell you how sad it was to read in the Pocono Record that Phil had been killed in the World Trade Center attacks. I read it online and with tears in my eyes I told Louise what I had read. May GOD see you through for the rest of your life. Please accept our deepest sympathies.

To the family of Mr. Phil Miller,

I wear on my wrist what is called a Mercy B.A.N.D. with the name of your beloved and the letters "WTC" under his name.

I received this beautiful gift from Calvary Chapel in Albuguerque,NM. I listen to a Christian radio station and have sent donations from time to time because I enjoy the pastor, Skip Heitzig so much.

As a token of their appreciation for these humble monitary gifts I was sent the band.

I wrote the outreach and asked if there was a way to find out more about the gentleman whose name I proudly wear. I was refered to this site.

When I looked his name up and saw his picture, I wept.

It was comforting to read the wonderful things people had written about him in this guest book.

Know that I will pray for all of you friends and family of Mr. Phil Miller every day that I wear this Mercy B.A.N.D.

May GOD continue to comfort you and give you strength to go through another day without Phil to brighten your life. May the memories of him always put a smile on your face and warm your heart.

I attended & spoke at the launch ceremony of the United In Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt last week in California. It was an amazing night. The block I made for Phil appears on Panel 116. The quilt is now going to tour various US cities. I will be back myself for the Boston show. Some panels will be in New York on Oct 11th.

If anyone knows how to get in touch with Arlene please pass on this information & also say that I will be thinking of her, Toby & all of Phil's family & friends next Wednesday. If anyone wants to contact me I would love to hear from you, [email protected]

My sincere condolensces to Phil's family and friends. His name is very poignant for me as my father-in-law was (deceased) and my brother-in-law is also a Phillip Miller (who ironically lives in Kurrajong in outer Sydney - one of the area most recently affected by devastating bush fires).

My parents moved to the Pocono's a few years ago, and had made friends with Phil and Arlene. Since i live in Las Vegas, i only can visit so often. When i did visit, what a joy it was to see what wonderful friends my parents had made. Phil made a huge impact on my family with his humor and his love for life. I was deeply saddend on the news of his passing and even though i only met him a few times, i was devestated. No words can describe the loss, and he was very much a part of our family. My parents, MaryAnne and Larry, and my grandmother Emily miss him deeply, they lost a great friend. I take comfort in knowing that we will all meet again, and this time i'll win at Domino's. Thank You Phil for giving us laughter, and for having such great spirit. Just like you, Arlene is part of our family, and always will be. Love, Jenai

Phil was a Senior Vice President for several years at ISO, Inc. before his last job at AON. I reported to him for several years and learned so much from him - not only about the job but also on how to work with others. In addition to being extremely bright, he was exceptional at working with others to get things done. I rarely if ever saw him angry, and we could always count on him for his sense of humor at times where we needed it most.

He lives on in many of us that he led.

God bless.....

I don't believe I ever met a kinder, gentler man than my brother-in-law, Phil. My heart hurts knowing I'll not see him again. I will cherish the memories of few times we all were together. God be with you & know you are all in our prayers. Love, Helen

We are very sorry for your loss of Phil. May his life and love live on through those who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I worked for the same company (ISO)as Phil did before his current position. I worked in the WTC for a brief period in the 80's. Although I never met Phil personally, I know he was a good man, and a thoughtful, loving husband and father, My prayers are with you and all of the survivors. God Bless each of you and all of us.
