Edward Straub Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2001.
Edward William Straub, 48, a resident of Morristownship, New Jersey, is missing and presumed dead on September 11, 2001, in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.

Born in Bennington, Vermont, on April 26, 1953, he was the son of Edward A. and Gloria (Dennett) Straub, former longtime Williamstown residents. He was a graduate of Williamstown High School with the Class of 1971 and is remembered for his percussion and drum abilities in the band. He achieved Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 70. He was a graduate of the former North Adams State College, then moving to Boston to attend Boston University Law School. He graduated with honors in 1979 and passed his bar exam in 1980.

At the time of the attack, he was president of Aon Compensation Consulting. He worked for Aon for several years developing a growing business worldwide.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, he had many interests, including golf, and he loved to do things with his family and take the boys camping in the Scouting tradition.

Besides his parents of Sebring, Florida, he leaves his wife the former Sandra Nadherney, whom he married on June 16, 1990; four sons, Aaron Straub, Sam Straub, Michael Straub, and Jonathon Straub; two grandsons, Joshua and Zachary; two brothers, Stan Straub and Matt Straub; his paternal grandparents, Adam and Beatrice Straub of Hoosac Falls, New York; aunts, an uncle, nephew, and cousin.

A private memorial service was conducted on September 22 in Morristownship.
Tribute submitted by Edward & Gloria Straub.

Hard at Work or at Relaxing

Edward W. Straub, who was 48 and lived in Morris Township, N.J., could multitask with the best of them. His oldest son, Aaron, remembers his father coming home from working and settling into his rocking chair to watch television and read the newspaper at the same time.

A lawyer and compensation specialist for Aon, Mr. Straub loved his work. At the same time, he also loved his family, which includes two sons in their 20's and two more, ages 7 and 5. He grew up in Williamstown, Mass., where he played in the band and became an Eagle Scout, said his father, Edward A. Straub. As an adult, all those scouting skills came in handy, particularly when he wanted to take his children camping. As they grew, he switched them to golf, playing rounds at his club in New Jersey and at St. Andrews in Scotland.

He was also good with a hammer, restoring houses that his son Aaron calls "derelict, almost" from top to bottom. Even with his hands full of vital house parts, he still managed to pull off pranks. Once he assigned Aaron, then 9 or 10, to stand next to him holding a big shovel while he balanced on a chair, splicing wires dangling from the ceiling. "If I start shaking, like I'm getting electrocuted, you have to hit me with the shovel to knock the electricity out of me," he told his son, leaving out the fact that he had shut the power off.

ED,

I HAVE GREAT MEMORIES OF US DURING THE MONTHS OF OUR SENIOR YEAR AND THE SUPER SUMMER OF FUN THEREAFTER. I'D PICK YOU UP FROM THE GETTY GAS IN MY DAD'S COVAIR, AND LISTENING TO YOUR "INCREDIBLE STORIES" WE WOULD HEAD OUTTA TOWN. I REMEMBER OUR RELIGIOUS ED CLASS AT ST. RAPHEALS CHURCH ON MONDAY EVENINGS, EACH CLASS BORING TO THE HILT UNTIL THE FRANCISCAN MONK NIGHT. HIS MESSAGE ON THE POWER OF HUMAN WILL AND HIS METHOD TO IMPROVE THE SAME, REMAINS WITH ME TO THIS DAY AND I'M SURE IT DID WITH YOU. I WILL ALWAYS REGRET NOT BEING ABLE TO BE BEST MAN AT YOUR WEDDING AS I HAD COMMITMENTS TO THE USAF AT THE TIME. YOU WERE AS MUCH AN EARLY BLOOMER AS I WAS LATE, YOUR WISDOM AND SINCERITY DID WHOLISTICLY IMPACT ON MY MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH AND I CONSIDER OUR FRIENDSHIP TO BE UNIQUE. YOU HAD KNOWN YOUR GOAL TO BE A LAWYER AND WITH PERSISTENCE AND FOCUS YOU ACHIEVED SUCCESS IN CAREER AND FAMILY. I KNEW YOU AS A MAN OF INTEGRITY AND PRINCIPLE, VIRTUES, I KNEW THEN ONLY AS VAGUE IDEAS.

HAVING SEEN THE SPECIAL 9/11 MOVIE ON HBO WE AGAIN RELIVE THE HORROR OF THE EVENTS, THAT CONTINUE TO KEEP FRESH IN OUR MINDS YOUR LOSS.

WE KNOW YOU ARE IN A BETTER PLACE AND IN THE HEART OF GOD, YOU ARE ALSO IN THE HEART AND MIND OF ALL OF US. WE MISS YOU.

We met because Ed bought something I was selling. He treated me like a friend. Once when we had lunch, he told me about a motorcycle he once had. He loved that bike. I had the same motorcycle. I loved mine too.

On 9-11 I was at work. When they told me the first plane had hit, my first thought was, "I don't belive it." My second thought was "Ed". I called and got his voice mail. It still bothers me.

God please bless Ed and take him straight to Heaven. God please help his family. I ask this in Jesus's name.

Straub family,

I remember waking up and reporting to work, a few days after the attacks. It was then that I first met Sandra, and your eldest son. We spoke for brief moments as she shared some of her memories.

I just want you to know that even though it was brief, I have not forgotten you or your family and I continue to pray for all of you.

Ed,

I was a friend of your brother and remember you driving us around Boston in your taxi back in college. Meeting you and your family when the boys were little. You and your family are in my prayers daily. You will live on in the hearts of friends and family forever.

Eddie,

We met in kindergarten, Mrs. Langer’s class, Grant School, Williamstown. I know this because I have the photo taken when we were just five on those steps.

I didn’t know you were lost in the Towers until May, 2003, when I visited Masie and Liz. I’ve thought of you over the years, often when the radio would play a song you sang with your band. How long ago that was!

I remember laughing with you in high school. I remember all those fun times when we were young and newly married in the apartments of North Adams; you were with Janice and I was with Tom – those days are long gone! I remember when your son, Aaron, was born. I remember spending a New Year’s Eve in New Bedford when we drove there in that little VW bug, all four of us. I remember spending time with you at our 15th high school reunion.

I live in the metro Washington DC area now, my son worked at the Pentagon after 9/11 as a ham radio operator. I thought the only people I knew at the Towers were people weren’t at work that morning. I’m sad that you were there.

Dear Ed,

On this eve of the second year after 9/11, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I will always remember your visits to Aunt Mary and Uncle Harry on the "Farm." I now live on that same farm. The memories of those dear to us surround our home here. Your memory will forever be cherished and remembered as well. May you find comfort in the precious souls with whom you now dwell and may your family find comfort in knowing that your spirit is giving them strength and courage.

We have never met, but I feel a closeness and bond that only God could have created. On Sunday Sept. 8th 2002 at Church, names of those lost at the WTC, were passed out to pray for during the week. You and your family have been on my heart all week. I longed to know about this man I had never met. Through this website I was able to learn a litte about Edward Straub and his family. I pray for peace and God's guidance for the family and friends, during this difficult time.I hope that it will be of some comfort knowing that there are many people out there, praying for you.May you begin to feel God's presence and comfort as your hearts begin to heal. God Bless You !

For Ed: I remember helping you refinish a hardwood floor in you apartment at college, discussing heady issues in history and political science classes, going out shooting together, your keen desire to become an international lawyer, having your Dad frame prints for me at his shop, Sandy, Sandy pregnant, Sandy and you with your first child, discovering your sucesses after many years of no contact by way of your loss. Recently talking with my brother, with whom you also went to college, about your passing. I know you are with the Lord. May God bless your family and our country.

Bruce & Lisa Wilson

September 6, 2002

Bruce and Ed were childhood friends in Williamstown Mass.

The last time we saw Ed & Sandra was at their home in Medfield Mass. We lived in Medway Mass and it was the first time in ages that Bruce and Ed had got together. It was a nice evening.

Bruce and I were talking about Ed the other night and Bruce told me a story of when they were kids. (It brought a smile and laughter to my husband's face) Ed and Bruce fashioned a raft out of wood and planned to ride it around the river behind my in-laws home. Ed got on the raft to try it out and ended up paddling it around the river as my mother-in-law screamed and had fits from the shore. Ed and Bruce thought it was great fun but not my mother-in-law.

Bruce remembers warmly that Ed was full of fun, courage and liked challenges. They shared their love for music and adventure.

We ask God continue to bless and protect you all as you continue this most painful journey.

To my Brother,

A day doesn't go by that you don't enter my thoughts.

I remember the clubhouse you built when I was 7 and the times you took me fishing and pizza afterwards. I remember you playing the drums in the H.S. marching band during parades.

And as I got older you were always there when I needed you with your knowledge, understanding and advice.

I had always looked forward to the holidays with you and your family, you always added something special.

You were my Best-man at my wedding. You were a confidant that I could always count on, I admired you greatly, trusted you and loved you.

Ed,

I never got to know you well. Everyone in the neighborhood was always so busy with everyday life. You were kind enough to have us at your home a few times for parties. I was with your young boys the weekend after the tragedy. We went for a hayride and pumpkin picking. They were so energized and full of life, as everyone says about you. Michael wore your Scouting cap and proudly told the wagon driver of your Scouting accomplishments. May God rest your soul and bring comfort to your family.

Dear Straub Family,

Although we are not related, I couldn't help but read about the loss of Edward Straub. I just read through the list of people lost at the WTC, and found a "Straub" listed amongst the missing.

I can only imagine your pain and sorrow at the loss of such a wonderful man. No doubt you were all blessed with his life and the presence of his life in yours.

I hope that you find peace in your life, and am sure you will be re-united with Edward.

May God bless you all.

Cousin Ed, I will miss you. I could not believe you actually found me that time in Germany. You were on a job trip & were in the area so you said & you just thought you could find me by going by Government housing. I just happened to be outside on the playground with Jacob when I saw this car it went by then stopped then backed up. I thought this person must be lost. Then you drove up to the playground stopped the car & got out. I was so surprised. You couldn't stay long but long enough to let me know I cared. I will NEVER, EVER forget that nor you. I asked you for legal advise & you were always there with an answer. I will miss you tremendously. May God be with you now in the heavens and with your family.

Uncle Eddie, although it's been years since I've called you that, that's how I remember you. As a child, you were the uncle who loved to clown around and make all of us kids laugh. Thank you for the laughs as a child and for my two very cool cousins.

Can't believe it.

I could NEVER sneak up on you

when we were little.

Your tree fort was

unapproachable

unless I wanted air-gun-blown

crabapples in my face!

Your whoop of victory said it all.

The ultimate warrior in our

games.

Moving to the bigger tower

must've felt just great.

Found your niche where

the action is. Wow.

You really did it.

I still see the airliner

sneaking up on you

and I just can not believe it.

I knew what it was in for!

Your jubilant whoop of victory wafts still through my trees

- the bad guys lost, too.

And that's what really mattered.

I'll try again when my days are

done - just to hear your whoop.

I've time to plan my approach.

But I already know you're silently

watching with a grin

from your new perch.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
