Joseph DiPilato Obituary

Blooms to Fill the Yard
This year the chrysanthemums have not been planted in front of Joseph L. Di Pilato's home. Each morning, Phyllis Buono looks out her window in Staten Island at Mr. Di Pilato's house across the street. She notices that the impatiens, their blooms past, are still there, and she remembers that Joe Di Palato, her friend, is gone.

Mr. Di Pilato, 57, was an electrician who for the past 22 years had done work for Morgan Stanley in the World Trade Center. By avocation, though, he was a gardener. Each season he would put in new plants as if he were striving for year-round blooms.

"He set that yard up like it was a resort," Mrs. Buono said. "In the spring the flower pots would explode with blossoms."

Mr. Di Pilato's wife, Maria, met him when they were growing up in Little Italy but did not discover he was a gardener until they moved to Staten Island with their sons, Leo, now 32, and Joseph, now 31. "He didn't like the flowers I bought, so he started planting," she said. "He loved going out in the yard. His backyard had to be impeccable."

I am Tiziana, the daughter of Liliana Bruni, cousin of Joe, daughter of his father's sister Maria. After 10 years I have discovered the he passed away in that tragic 9/11. I have been told by the other cousins living in Virginia. Looking at his face, I can recognise Nonna Maria. My warmest hugs in this sad day, from Europe.

Joe And Leo, many times after this tragedy I wished I would have run into one of you to tell you how sorry I was for your loss. Whenever I saw one of you with your dad, it looked like you were with your best friend.

Dearest Dad,
It has been almost 7 years since you have been with us. We miss you tremendously. Something wonderful happened yesterday that I wanted to share. Your granddaughter Olivia typed in what she thought was her brothers name & brought up this website. As soon as she saw your picture she screamed with such excitement and said, "Mommy hurry come see Grandpa on the computer". It stopped me in my tracks & touched my heart more than you could ever know. All I could think about was how much you could not wait to be a grandfather. And little did we know on the last night that I was with you, I was already pregnant with your first grandchild. Leo & I would have given anything to be able to tell you in person you were going to finally be a Grandpa.
Olivia talks about her "Grandpa in heaven" all the time. She wishes she could have known you. You would be so blown away by Olivia. She has such a huge heart just as you did.
As Olivia & Joseph grow up they will know everything there is to know about their very special "Grandpa in heaven". We all miss you terribly!
All our Love to you in Heaven, Leo, Andrea, Olivia & Joseph

I remember Brillo as a kid, a year older than me. He was the best basketball player in Columbus Park on Mulberry Street. He gave me great pointers on getting the ball through the hoop. Everyone in the neighborhood loved Brillo. He was a great role model in a tough neighborhood. A natural athlete, terrific sense of humor and a decent human being. A guy like him is surely missed by many.

Dear Joseph's family,

I also dont know you and you dont know me. I am a 9th grader at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On September 11 I was involved in a chorus concert for remebering 911 victims called the "Rolling Requiem." I received a pin with Joseph's name on it. I am so very sorry about what happened. I want you to know that my prayers are for you and your family and that I bet Joseph is walking around in Heaven with Jesus and is feeling no pain. I know that Joseph will still bloom and grow in your hearts like his flowers, I know I will never forget him.

Love always and God Bless,

Dear Family of Joe,

We don't know know each other, but you are in my heart today and I just want to share that with you.

Yesterday, at a meeting, I met a woman who had a name tag on with the name Joe DiPilato on it, with a heart. She explained that she had just come from a 9/11 memorial at the Mission and they asked people to wear a name tag in honor of those we lost.

I was deeply touched that Joe was honored in this way! She remarked that it made her want to know more about him. I suggested she check online, but she didn't have a computer. I wanted to help her, so I found this site. I've printed out the wonderful picture of Joe with his bio, and the touching tribute letters to him.

I just wanted to let you know that we care, and share a piece, however small, of your sorrow. Your loss is deep...

Love,

June DeSena

Joe and Steve. Steve and Joe. They were always together, always smiling and always willing to do whatever it took to get our equipment up and running. For the longest time I never knew their real last names -- I thought it was "Petrocelli". They were great guys and, I'm sure, very much missed by their families and friends.

Joe, God bless you and your family.

To the DiPilato Family:

I worked in 2WTC for 13 years, I would see Joe all the time with Steve. They would come to the 62nd Floor, and work on whatever order was placed, we never knew eachother's names but always smiled and said hello to one another. When I found out about Joe & Steve I was devastated, the list of people I knew was endless. I wanted to express my sympathy to you in any way I knew how, I am so sorry this happened, and I pray for them everyday.

Brillo and I were good friends growing up on Mulberry Street. We played a lot of sports and although he could'nt run fast or jump high, he could play any sport and he was the best athlete of us all. We grew apart as we got older and I have'nt seen him in many years. About a year or so ago I thought of giving him a call but to my deep regret, never got around to it.

Well my friend, I'm so sorry for what happened to you and your family, rest in peace, I'll always remember you.And to you Maria, stay strong and God bless you and your family. Beany

We are very sorry for your loss of Joseph. May his green thumb, his life and love live on in you. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times shared with Joseph. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
