Patrice Braut Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 12, 2001.
Joyously Tenacious
At a company Christmas party four years go, Patrice Braut danced with a girl named Lupe. She fled into the night before he could learn her last name. The next day, Lupe Mendez found a note on her desk in Midtown, saying, "You left without saying goodbye." She felt like Cinderella.

Mr. Braut, 31, loved to travel, to play soccer and to take pictures, especially of the twin towers. He took Lupe to Brussels, Belgium, his hometown, to meet his parents. He excelled in his M.B.A. courses at Pace University. The first week of September, Lupe and Patrice, who lived in Riverdale, in the Bronx, went house-hunting in the suburbs. Mr. Braut was an only child, born after three failed pregnancies. "He was the little god of the family, adored by everybody," said his mother, Paola. "We lost everything through him."

His colleagues in technology at Marsh & McLennan have endowed a scholarship in his name at the Lycee Theodore Bracops, his childhood school. It is not for the best student, but for the most tenacious.

I was born in a small town in Wisconsin named Belgium, a place filled with immigrants from what was once part of Luxembourg. My thoughts and prayers this day are with Patrice (Rest in peace!) and his parents and all whose lives were touched by the events of 9/11/01. Too many gone too soon!

Patrice,
You and I attended Pace University together and I think about you once a day. As a survivor of that day, I feel terrible that I made it home that day and you didn't. When I received my MBA in 2002, I imagined you at my side collecting yours as well. I pray for you and know you are looking down over the people you have touched during your short life. I pray for your family that they can find the strength to live and continue your legacy. May you rest in peace friend and have eternal love and comfort. I miss you.

I read the recent NY Times article describing Patrice's parents trip from Brussels to New York to participate in the 3rd anniversary of 9/11 and to be close to their son. It's a heartbreaking story of love and loss.

I work in the downdown area of New York and will think of those parents and Patrice's friend, Lupe.

I wish them peace and healing.

Dearest Patrice,

I have thought about you often as we near the one year mark of the horrible tragedy that took you away from us.

I have fond memories of a funny, tenacious man who convinced me to do a story about a horrible TWA flight from the Dominican Republic back to New York. You were a true leader and helped get justice for those passengers. I remember how funny it was sitting in our freezing studio with you, Lupe and the other passengers listening to your ordeal. I loved your spirit and I know how much Lupe and your friends and family miss you very much. It was an honor to know you. Always know how loved you are and how you will never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace.

Hello Lupe. I don't know if you remember me, but I am the Police Officer who helped you complete the Missing Person report immediately after 9/11. Yours was the very first report, one of many (too many) that I had taken. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about or see Patrice's face or those of the many families I tried to help. In an odd way, I've always felt like I knew so many of those we lost, because of my interaction with the families, the personal details of the interviews and the photos submitted. I was recently at Ground Zero and was telling my Dad, how I had taken the Missing Person report for you. I showed him Patrice's picture on the wall and we shared a moment of silence. I'll never forget what you said to me, when you showed me your half-heart pendant and told me, "he has the other half of my heart!" My heart broke with yours. I never had the pleasure of meeting Patrice, but through your eyes I could see that he was loved very much and undoubtedly loved you very much too! Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, not only today, but always! I'm proud to be a New York City Police Officer, a New Yorker and an American! God Bless! Nick

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Patrice. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
