Terence McShane Obituary

The Friend Collector
The life of Terence McShane, so full and so brief, could be measured by his friendships. There were the buddies from Sts. Cyril and Methodius parish, St. Anthony's High School, lifeguarding, Siena College, rugby, his decade as a New York police officer, and the two years he spent as a city firefighter.

"Terence was still friendly with guys he went to nursery school with," said his older brother, Kieran. "He'd bump into someone and start talking, and I'd say, `Who was that?' "

"Some girl I went to third grade with," he would answer.

What drew people to him? Maybe it was the way he had mastered the art of drawing the best from small moments. Take one of his approaches to fatherhood: pushing a kids-packed stroller while in-line skating. Shirtless. Along Montauk Highway.

Mr. McShane, 37; his wife, Cathy; and their three children – the oldest of whom is 7 – had been living at a relative's house while their home in West Islip, on Long Island, underwent a wholesale renovation. And when he disappeared in the firestorm of Sept. 11, the Buddies of McShane banded together to finish the job.

Cathy McShane was back at the house a couple of weeks ago, preparing it for her family's first night there in months, when four men in uniform appeared at the door with the awful but welcome news: they had found her beloved Terence's remains. "I told everyone all along that I didn't want to come back to the house without him," she said. "And in a way, I didn't."

Hi Terrance, It's been over a decade when the two aircraft struck and over three thousand individuals who worked in the area of the towers past on along with a large number of firemen. God Bless you Terrance for you stood up for America and accomplished your tasks at hand. RIP Terrance. My great-great grandfather Hugh McShane of County Down, Ireland, his wife Mary Close and all of his children who arrived in the USA stand with me in expressing our love to an American who stood up to ward off defeat. Thank you very much Terrance.

Terrance was a true man who gave his all on this specific day and time does not reduce the impact of Terrance's untimely death brought about by explosions in the City of New York which destroyed two buildings and shook America's resolve to maintain itself despite this event. Rest In Peace Terrance McShane.

Years pass by as one reflects on the days of the past where the towers met their fate and
along with them, some very good men and women.

Your children are growing up and your entire family has adjusted to your loss, such a great loss ...........

Shall be joining you along the way and hope that every thing is as good as I was told in classes as a youth.

Hi Terence,

As the fall enters our lives each year, I personally think of you as you fell giving your all, to a life sustaining effort in your line of duty. You met the requirement on 9/11 years ago and to this, I among many others pay you tribute.

My heritage McShane's out of Kircubbin, County Down, Ireland pay their respect to you for your
VALOR, COURAGE, and WILL to aid those in jeopardy.

Will always have you in mind ..... if not Spirit......

Dear Terry,

Hello ! Once a year you shall find me on this website indicating to you, that you are of my namesake McShane, and one of my heros!

A decade and one half and I can still see the towers being struck and set ablaze from where I was teaching students in Newark, NJ. From the first hit, through the second hit, and then through the collapse of building 1 and then building 2 with not a defender in site......

But you and many others were there helping AMERICANS survive at your eventual peril of surrendering your most valuable soul in support of those who were in urgent need at that moment.

Looking forward to meeting you and shaking your hand for your ultimate donation of love for your fellow man, regardless of the tough cost ......

Hello all, I have just returned to London after a brief visit to NYC. I made the trip because I wanted to pay my respects at the 9/11 memorial for all those who sadly lost there lifes. As it is for all those that pay there respects it was a very moving and emotional experience. Our tour guide gave us all a piece of cloth and suggested we take a rubbing of the name of a person, the name was drawn to was Terence. The piece of cloth that bears his name and Battalion will remain with me for always and I will never forget all the brave men and women who gave there own lives to save others. R.I.P Terence.

I never knew Terence McShane, but from seeing his pictures and reading about him I'm sure he was a wonderful and fun-loving man. Shortly after September 11, 2001, a local restaurant started selling bracelets with the names of the New York firefighters who courageously gave their lives to save others on 9/11. I looked over many bracelets and held quite a few before I chose the one with the name Terence McShane. I've kept that bracelet on the dashboard of my car for the past 10 years. I look at it often and my heart still aches for him, his family, and all those who lost loved ones on that horrible day. God Bless the McShane family.

My name is Dan O'Donoghue. I was just on facebook and saw a fourth grade picture of my class at St. Cyril's and Methodius and it brought back memories. Through other avenues I then came to learn about Terence. Terence and I were in the same class most of the way up to 6th grade when I left to live in Ireland. I will always remember him because he was the only boy who offered me any competition in class. I was deeply saddened to hear of what happened. This note is just to let you know that people are thinking of Terence, not just in NY, and the USA but he has touched people who are now spread much further afield.

Dear Cathy, My name is Sue Mahoney McCann. I live in Jacksonville Fla, but grew up in Point Lookout Long Island. About four or five years ago while browsing through a local Good Will store, always on the hunt for a NY Yankee tee shirt for my son, I found a tee shirt in memory of your dear Terence. I wondered how such a treasure would wind up in Good Will, but realized it was meant to be mine. I wear it every memorial day and of course on 9/11. As I was at a consignment shop on Sat, the girl who runs the shop asked me if I was a relation to Terence...and I told her how I came to have the shirt and she googled him for me...and there he (and you and your beautiful family ) came up! I know God put the shirt in my path for a reason and I wanted to share this with you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers, and I pray God continues to give you courage and strength to carry on. Peace be with you, Sue

May God Bless All of You. I attended Siena College and graduated with Terence in 1986. I lived in Hennepin with many of the rugby players for two years. I last saw Terence in 1993 while home on leave from Vicenza, Italy. I was on the beach (Orchard?) in the Bronx with Luis Marquez (Siena Grad-my Hennepin roommate/after Ed Gentner), and there was Terence walking towards us in a policeman's uniform. I had no Idea that he had been a police officer at the time. we exchanged kind words, and kept walking along the beach in separate directions. The image of him walking towards me is with me forever. I have no recollection of him walking away. Love you Terence. I'm blessed and proud to have known you during our Siena years. CPT (P) Aanarian "Nate" Stevens, Siena '86

Dear Mr. McShane,
My definition of hero is someone who puts the needs of others before their own. I want to thank you for what you did on September 11, 2001. You helped get others to safety when the Twin Towers were attacked. Because of what you did you are a true hero.

With all that you did for our country I am sure that your kids, Aiden, Colin, and Sean are very proud of you and will miss you very much. I am very thankful for what you did on that day. I’m sure your wife Cathy will miss you very much on this day as well.

We will always remember what you did for our country and for Ladder 101. Though you had no way of knowing what would happen that day, you will never be forgotten. Every Patriot Day, we will remember you and the other heroes of September 11.

Sincerely,

I grew up with Terrance,I have known him since We played pee Wee Football together with St.Cyrils and Methodius and he also lived in my neighborhood.I later on invited him to my Wedding and we all had a good time, I saw Terrece 1 week before Sept 11,at the time I was a New York City police officer and Terrace was now a Fireman, he was working part time as a Limo Driver and I was guarding the Isreali Mission and All of a sudden I see this limo pull up and I notice it is Terrece so we start talking and I said to him "Terrece, You took a cut in pay from a sgt., to a fireman, and his reply was YES, I KNOW BUT I GET TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH MY WIFE AND KIDS BECAUSE OF THE BETTER WORK SCHEDULE. Them I never saw him again. So to this day I keep a picture of my friend Terrece on my book shelf at my home and when my kids first asked me who that is and I would rely to them."This kids is a Great Man" and my friend. Among the innocent lives lost on that day was Terence, a good and lovable man just doing his job.

May we never forget those who perished, and may their families find comfort in the knowledge that their memories are held dear, both by close friends and complete strangers alike. May God grant you comfort on this poignant anniversary.
