Andrew Jordan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2001.
Loving the Eye of the Storm
It was Hurricane Gloria in 1985 that led Andrew B. Jordan into the firefighting life. With the power out, a neighbor in West Islip, on Long Island, lighted a kerosene lamp that wound up igniting the house. Mr. Jordan thought to back the neighbor's car out of the garage, so there wouldn't be an even bigger catastrophe, then led a disabled woman to safety.

He became a New York City firefighter in 1994 and was assigned to Ladder Company 132 in Brooklyn, nicknamed "The Eye of the Storm." Every day was a joy, despite his two-and-a-half-hour commute. "He loved the firehouse and all the guys that worked there," said his mother, Ellen. He loved even the unromantic parts of the job, like fire inspections, said his father, Thomas, because he saw them as one more way to save lives.

A 36-year-old father of four, he was keenly aware of the risks he faced. When the ladder truck pulled up at a burning building, he was often the first one raised high into the air to battle the flames. "Andrew was going into the bucket at one fire, and this guy said to him, 'Thank God it's you and not me,'" his mother recalled. "Andrew said, 'Thank God it's me and not you.'"

To the Jordon family. Every year Andrew’s Guest Book comes up. Andrew & my son Kenneth went to school in West Islip & were friends. When visiting Ken in FL on 9/11, I watched the ceremonies with him & he would tell me the stories. Truthfully, some I didn’t remember. This year was a different day for me. I watched the ceremonies alone. Ken was called home 4-1/2 years ago. I’m sure they have connected by now. To all families who lost their loved ones & those suffering illness from 9/11, may God Bless you. No, we will “Never Forget”. When I look quickly at Andrew’s picture, you would think it was Kenneth.

Well uncle Andrew I never got to know you the way that would’ve been right but, that doesn’t mean I didn’t know you. The whole family loves you and talks about you as much as they can but even 19 years later it hurts. My mom will always tell me stories about you with a smile and if I have questions she doesn’t hesitate to tell me about you and your incredible self. I know you were there to greet ur parents and your brother and you’ll be there for everyone else. Godspeed Uncle Andrew until the day we meet again

Always remembering, never forgetting. He and my son Kenneth were friends. When visiting Ken in FL on 9/11, he watch the memorial service & I also watched with him as painful as it was. Then he reminisced about all they did together. He would say, Ma remember when ..... My prayers are with the Jorden family on the Anniversary of this day. ❤

To the family of Andrew. My name is Doug Edel. I went to high school with Andrew which we had a lot of fun times and graduated in 83. I didn't see him until 12 years later we both entered the same fdny academy class of 95. It was great to see a good friend there and we talked a lot about the past and our hopes for our new careers. He ended up in Brooklyn L132 and I in Queens E305. I was heartbroken when I saw Andrews name on the list and have thought about him many times over the years and how unfair and cruel fate can be. Cannot believe it's 15 years. Praying for you and your family and you will always be my FDNY brother. God Bless

To the Jordan Family, today, I'm here with my son Kenneth in FL. As we paused for a moment of silence, Ken said he couldn't watch any more, as he paused thinking about a dear friend of his. He does remind me of the wooden mantel they took for a bumper on the truck, like I remember. I just read Andrew's story. My prayers go out to all of you, in loving memory of Andrew.

Today 9-11-14 in San Antonio Texas, we honor the fallen victims of 9-11 by participating in a stair climb. Firefighters and Police and civilians throughout the surrounding area climb 120 floors in memory of all the victims and there families.
Today, I also climbed as a Firefighter myself it was my honor to carry your picture and name tag in your memory.
Until we meet again my brother Firefighter, rest in peace. May god bless you and your family.

I was pregnant and couldn't work on the pile with my brothers who were there. I wound up the house man for 5 days. When my husband said he knew I wanted to choose a name for our daughter from the FFs who made the supreme sacrifice that awful day I chose Andrew Jordan. I didn't know him or his family but something told me that was the name. Jordan is 11 1/2 now. She is a terrific kid and knows that she is named after a hero.

Hello, until September 11, 2012 I had never heard of the name Andrew B. Jordan from lad. 132 all I knew was that he was one of the 343 that gave their own life to save others. I am a current freshman at Eastern Kentucky University and I am here to study Fire Protection Administration and Emergency Medical Care and on the night of Sept 11, 2012 we held a memorial service for the fallen 343. I live in a 16 story dorm building and we held a memorial stair climb going up 16 flights 7 times me and my fellow firefighters at EKU walked side by side in our turnout gear to remember what those men did that day. When we registered we were handed a picture to carry with us up those steps and I was handed Andrew B. Jordan. Together we climbed those steps and when I got tired I looked at the picture and told myself Andrew never quit so I'm not going to quit. It was truly one of the most inspirational feelings I've ever had. Andrew Jordan and the other 342 are true hero's and men and women that I follow as an example of true bravery. Andrew thank you for your sacrifice that day and I know we were climbing those steps together. Never forget our hero's!

To the family of Andrew B. Jordan. I just want you do know that Andrew is not forgotten. I recently participated in an event on 9-11 in Denver in which firefighters from around the state of Colorado and even from surrounding states came together to rember those who have died that tragic day of 9-11-01. We climbed 110 flights of stairs rembering all of those firefighters that gave so much that day and all of the families that also gave so much. I climbed particularly in honor of Andrew. God bless Andrew and yourselves for all that has been sacrificed. Andrew will not be forgotten.

Dear Jordan Family,
this is my prayer for you...

Father in Heaven, we ask that you will grant this family the comfort and peace that only you can give. We know that while we will experience physcial pain and hurt, the spiritual and emotional pain that we feel will be shared by you. It is with rejoicing hearts that we lift this praise to you for your servant who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Lord we ask that you will bless this family as they continue to deal with the loss of a loved one and we ask that you will give them special guidance. Lord we know that you can heal the deepest wounds and have already bridged the gap between us and God. Father we ask that You heal this family as only you can and we would pray that you will be there for them. It is in your precious name that we pray,
Amen

I hope that these words will give you comfort and peace.

To the Jordan Family

I grew up around the corner from the Jordan Family. I have very fond memeroies of Andrew and his brother's and sisters. Though I spent time with his younger brother John trying to stay out of trouble, I remember the giving nature of Andrew and the rest of the family. He kept on eye on us and made everyone feel as part of the family. My thoughts go out to the Jordan families of then and now.

To the Jordans:

Was just home (to West Islip) on vacation and heard the news about Andrew from the Lundie's next door to my parent's old house (Bob and Henrietta). I can't even begin to tell you how Billy and I felt upon hearing about Andrew. May God bless you all. We often think about you and your wonderful family. May Andrew watch over all of us....

To the Jordan Family:

I am the daughter of Rick and Sheri McKee from Clanton, AL. They brought me into Clanton's support of your family upon Andrew's death. Your lost husband, father, and son has become my hero. I think of him almost daily as a reminder of sacrifice and heroism. Andrew has become such a part of our family. We call him "Our Firefighter". If anyone talks about Andrew or the Jordans, everyone knows who we mean because you are a part of each of our everyday lives. I think of Andrew to remind myself of the kind of people God wants us to be. I think of Andrew to remind myself that I am not the most important thing in my day. I think of Andrew and thank God that Andrew was there to be a hero for so many people. I pray that God has kept you well and healed your hearts. Know that even two years later, there are people praying for you daily. How wonderful it must have been to have such a brave man in your life!

I got the pleasure of working with Andy a few years back. That smile always made the day. And all the talks of Ireland filled my dreams. I was also able to tell him that he was the bravest person I knew and that he and all firefighters were my heros. When I found out that he was one of the many in the 9/11 tragedy, I of course was very upset to say the least, but I couldn't help but smile when I remembered the talks we had and how truly good he was. My thoughts are on him constantly and prayers for his family are forever going out. Andy was one of the most incredible people to ever come into my life and I will never forget him.

Dear Family and Friends of Andrew Jordan,

My name is Elfie Smith and I am a high school teacher in Chicago. Yesterday, we had a prayer service to remember those who lost their lives last year on September 11th. Upon entering the gym, each person was given a notecard with three names on it who fell victim to the attacks. Andrew was one of mine. I carried that notecard around with me the whole day and prayed for him and you in all of my classes, all of my free periods, when I got home from work, and before I went to bed. I cried for you and tried to ease your pain by my prayers and thoughts. I will carry his name with me in my wallet from now on so that way he will never be forgotten. He was a VERY brave man for doing what he did. Many thanks to all the firefighters who risk their lives daily to help those they don’t even know. My prayers will always be with you and your family!

Love,

Elfie Smith

But I do wish to give each and every family my love and I will keep them in my prayers. I wish the Jordon family the best!

Well buddy its been a year now, and I guess it was about this time you headed down to do what you do best, help people that you did not know and take care of those you did.

Well I am proud that I knew a guy that on earth was larger than life, and after is immortalized as a true hero. God only knows how many lives you saved and what a good person you were, and for that I am sure he has you standing tall next to him.

Even though we did not see each other as much after school, when we did it was always great to see that big smile, I am just proud to say that I knew you and my prayers are with your family.

To the Jordan Family,

I, too, like many in this guest book received a Mercy Band bearing Andrew's name from my sister as a Christmas gift. It truly wasn't until I received this band that the tragedy really hit home with me.

As a former police reporter in Dallas, I got to know firefighters on a daily basis and always appreciated their courage and strength.

I read Andrew's profile on the Legacy web site and am so glad to know more about him and his family. I wear my Mercy band with his name proudly every day and include him and his family in my daily prayers.

I'm proud to tell people who inquire about my band about a courageous, unselfish man who paid dearly to save those thrust in an international and tragic spotlight.

Men and women firefighters don't go to work everday thinking they will be memorialized this way and that's one of the many things that make them so great.

I'm pleased and proud to honor Andrew every day and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. I, like many others, will never forget the events on that September morning or the people who gave us all hope.

God's peace and blessings to the Jordan family. Know that there are literally hundreds of thousands of people thinking and praying for you every day. They just haven't signed this book yet.

May God keep you all - my thanks to you and Andrew for his sacrifices.

Looking East from my 135 Eastern, 13th floor window

You can see the top 2 floors of the Firehouse

From where the 6 brave souls of Ladder 132

Made their last run ...

Each night, all night, 6 red candles burn in that window

Not so the firefighters in the House can see them

But so the firefighters in Heaven can ...

Rest in peace, brave souls.

I would like to extend my sympathy to the entire Jordan family. It has been along time since I have spoken to Andrew, probably shortly after High School. I couldnt believe when I saw he was among them many missing brothers from the WTC tragedy. I too remember the fire that sparked his desire to become a firefighter as I was a West Islip firefighter and responded to that alarm. All we can do now is remember him and that he passed doing what he loved and while helping others. He will not be forgotten.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Andrew. We thank him for helping others as a firefighter. Such a dedication comes with a warm and caring heart. May his courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those he has helped. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
