Valaria Murray Obituary

A Working Mother

Valaria Murray, a legal secretary, was a mother, a professional and a woman who knew how to enjoy herself. She gave hours and hours to the PTA at the school her five children attended in Flushing, Queens. She clicked off to work in Manhattan each morning, resplendent in high heels. She kept a book of crossword puzzles in her purse for those empty moments on the subway, where she sat busily filling in the answers with a pen. She was always up for a game of bingo, and loved Clint Eastwood movies like "In the Line of Fire."

She had always worked, first part time and then full time after her husband died. When she was 63, she polished her computer skills with a city-sponsored course for the elderly, and when she was 64, she landed a job with Ohrenstein & Brown on the 85th floor of 1 World Trade Center. Her children, all grown up, watched for her e-mail messages.

For her 65th birthday on Sept. 15, 2000, they secretly planned a brunch at a restaurant in Bayside, Queens. They and the grandchildren and many of Mrs. Murray's friends surprised her as she arrived. She burst into tears.

"Ma, we believe in you," Ken Murray declared at her memorial service. "We love you. We honor you. We miss you."

Hi to Mrs. Murray's family. Your Mother's name caught my attention in 2001, as I have twin daughters, one named Valerie and one named Victoria. Our last name is Murray, and today we found this site so wanted you to know ever since been praying for your family. We are sorry for your loss. God bless you as the years go by and knowing others are thinking of you.

September 11, 2013 I was very dear friends with Vals son Kenny Murray in Los Angeles. I remember the first time I met Val picking her up at the airport with Kenny, after a short ride home and dinner I realized she was one of those ladies everyone wanted as a mom. So many laughs during our visits. I will cherish them forever. It was sometime after that horrific morning that I found out that Val was one of the victims. For me it now made that day very personal. I still become emotional this day every year when I think of you. I send my best to the family and keep you in my prayers.

To the Murray family,
I cannot say enough how much I miss your mom. She was my mothers best friend (Dolores from Monroe NY) for the better part of 40 years. Val seemed to come to all the big moments in our lives. When Val and Valery came to my wedding in CA (1991)for the weekend or my brothers wedding it showed how much she loved us.
She always said to get a job with benefits and to enjoy life, and be happy. That is hard to do when the people you love are not around....
I have not seen most of your family since we came for a visit to Queens (your dad was still alive).
God bless all of you.
Your mom is always in my heart..
All my love,
Christopher Boylan

I had the pleasure of knowing Valerie and working with her at a firm in 1999. She was a wonderful person. Full of life and always had a smile on her face and that is how I remember her and always will. You and your family will always be in my prayers.

I worked with Val's son Ken and heard stories about her and the rest of the family. I was horrified to hear she was a 9/11 victim. As we come up on the tenth anniversary of this terrible tragedy, I will be thinking of Val and everyone who loved her; keeping them close in my heart. I have lost touch with Ken and would appreciate it if someone would contact me with information on him. I can be reached on Facebook.

Valerie and I started working at O&B on the same day. I worked in the Garden City office and had the pleasure of working with her a few days a week while she took a break from the NYC office. She was an absolute doll. She always had a smile on her face and used to "live it up a bit" when we ordered some baskin Robbins ice cream as a well deserved break. I try to watch the memorial every year and listen for her name. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.

I met Val in 1985 when I began my first real legal secretary job at Simon, Meyrowitz & Meyrowitz. I was a young and naive girl. Val helped me grow up. We worked together for over 10 years. Val brought salad for lunch every day. She hated carrots, but put them in there any way. She would come over to me in her pink, fuzzy slippers and tell me "I hate these things, but you can eat them". We had many great laughts at SMMS. I can still hear her laughter. Miss you Val and God Bless!

I met val in 1978 when I started my very first job with Simon, Meyrowitz & Jobrack. We have kept in touch ever since. I have since moved to Virginia. In Aprl of 2001 I went to New York to visit my family & friends. I called val & met with her for dinner. We had a short visit but for some reason I really felt a need to see her, not knowing that it would be the last time I would see her. I remember her telling me about her job at the World Trade Center and how it was scary to work on the 80th something floor. She said she was afraid of height and how after her old age she was working so high up in that building. She did say she was afraid. Today, September 15th would have been her 66th birthday. Happy Birthday Val! She was loved by everyone that met her. She will always be remembered by me! I wish her family the best. She always talked about her children. I believe she was a good mother as well as a good friend.

Sincerely, Anna

Although I did not know Valerie for a long period of time, I did have the pleasure of working with her at a firm three years ago. During that time she struck me as a woman with poise, a sharp mind and a kind heart. I hope it helps the Murray family to hear these words about Valerie.

For Valerie's family: I am very sorry for your pain and I only hope that the support of your friends provides you with some level of solace.

Sincerely,

Eric Sarver

You were our north and south, our east and west. Our working week and Sunday rest. Our noon, our midnight, our talk, our song. We thought that you would last forever. WE were wrong.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
