Pain fills our hearts when we think of that September day. So many loved ones lost in a senseless act of violence. We look forward to being reunited with our loved ones in a world where love and peace will reign.

Red rocks Park, outside of Denver, has a memorial climb every year to honor those firefighters that we lost. "We climb, because they climbed" is the theme and participants climb the steps equal to the stairs of the WTC. Money raised goes to the Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Many civilians walk along side firefighters from around the state and from out of state. About 2,500 marched/climbed this year. Each person carries a name and photo of one of the 343 fallen. I climbed for Thomas and was honored to do so.

Hello McCann Family,
I think of Tommy everyday. His picture is in my classroom as a tribute and memory of a dear friend lost on 9/11. He was our leader and captain of Ernie's in Woodside. I teach 5th grade in Deer Park. On 9/11, I tell the children of the sacrifice so many made that day, and my friend. Anne, you have a beautiful family. I know in my heart, Tommy loved you and his family so much. We will always keep his memory alive.
Love to all,
Dennis Maffei

Hi Anne.
Another anniversary. Of course you know that you are in our thoughts.
My anniversary’s of Ed, the times I remember him, are not connected to the day he died. I wonder if you are like that.
I remember a day he kissed me, or the day he thanked me for always being there, or the day we laughed so hard I thought I’d pee my pants.
I almost refuse to remember the day he died.
I remember Tommy just always laughing. I don’t really connect him with 911. I connect him with how to live your life to the fullest. I picture him with you, with the kids, with friends, with Ed.
We loved him so much, too. What an amazing guy he was.
I love you.

Dear Tommy: We have never met. But on 9/16/01 someone handed my husband a photo of you (sitting at a table eating b'fast)and asked him to search for you..my husband was a volunteer..all we had was your photo and last name. Now, I have a name to go with that photo which we kept. I've been praying since that day that you were safe and home with your family. I know your in God's hands now and I pray your wife and children find the strength to go on. Thank you and God bless.

I have never met you Thomas McCann, but I received a MercyBand bracelet with your name on it. After reading the heartfelt messages from your lifetime of family and friends, it is truly an honor to bear your name. Although I am now in Colorado, I am originally from New Hyde Park and passed through Woodside many times. Maybe we met, maybe we didn't, but now I have a little piece of you that I will show to the world with the honor you deserve.
Rest in Peace.

"Never have so few...Given so much..for so many...!!!" The author of this statement escapes us at the present, but we are sure that he would not object to our use of this quotation.
YES!!! One of the few for us is Thomas J.McCann...whether it was a family celebration, a quiet dinner, working on a home project or the call to duty...Tommy gave his all...always making everyone feel at ease with his easy charm and natural ability to make those around him ...truly feel a sense of welcome and friendship!!!
Although we have known Tommy for a little over a quarter of a century, we will always cherish the seemingly short period of time we spent with him and his family.
Our prayers and love continue , each day, with Anne, Courtney and Sean.
Each evening, as we gaze upon the waters of Long Beach & the Rockaways, we wait for the twinkling light of the moon...and YES...!!! it says "WELCOME..FRIEND.." That is how we will always remember THOMAS J. McCann!!!
Love You Tommy!!!

Anne, Courtney and Sean,
I never had the priviledge to meet Tom, but my husband worked with him at Local 829 and he told me what a wonderful person he was. I went to a benefit for him and I saw a video that outlined the happy events in his life. I wear a tee-shirt in his honor. My dad was a lieutenant in the NYFD and I was 13 when he died. I know how much Tom must of loved his wife and his children and I know that the love will be with you forever. His courage and selflessness is what makes him an angel of God. My prayers and thoughts will be with you everyday of my life. God Bless You.

Tom McCann - let me say his name once again - Tom McCann.
The name automatically brings a smile to your face. Tom McCann was my best friend. He loved his family and he loved the life that he had. He was one of the hardest working men I ever knew. Everything he did he did with his daughter Courtney, his son Sean and his wife Anne on his mind and in his heart. He touched the lives of many people, and was loved by all. There is not a minute that goes by when I don't think of him. He will be missed by everyone he came in contact with. We will all think of him and smile.

I was a very good friend of Tommy McCann about thirty years ago when we were both teenagers growing up in Queens. When we graduated from high school, we went our separate ways but I never forgot him and never considered him no longer my friend. I remember that Tommy was going to be a gym teacher. I don't know when he decided to become a firefighter but I can certainly understand why.
Tommy was the kind of guy who just loved being with his friends. He was a real decent guy, very loyal, fun to be with, and nice to everyone. Tommy was always in the middle of the action. And everyone loved him.
Tommy was so active that his mom had to buy him a new pair of Converse sneakers every two weeks. When he wasn't playing basketball in Fitz's backyard, he was playing touch football in the streets, hockey under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, or pool down in the "basement."
Tommy had very nice friends - Ray, Eddie, Kevin and Scott to name a few. We never did anything really bad but we were all a little bit mischievous back then. I remember a "gathering" (boys only) where Charlie's couch somehow caught on fire. I also remember running away from Jim (the Celtic Houses' security guard) on a very regular basis, although I cannot remember why.
Since September 11, I now remember that we never paid any attention to the Twin Towers that were being built downtown. The rooftops of the Celtic Houses had a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline but we never paid it any mind. We were teenagers after all. We had no reason to care about anything.
Well, we've all grown up a lot since then - and in a big way on September 11. I grieve for Tommy as well as other friends that my husband and I have lost. I can only imagine the pain that their families must be going through. Our friends that were lost were all very responsible, hard-working family men.
My heart goes out to all who lost a spouse, parent, child, or sibling on September 11. I hope they take some comfort in the sympathy and caring demonstrated by the rest of us ordinary Americans. I hope they know that their loved ones are in a very special peaceful place. I hope they know that their loved ones will never be forgotten.
Personally, I will never ever forget Tommy and the big person that he was. I will keep him in my heart forever.

Tom and Anne McCann took us into their home and adopted us when we were two young midwesterners transferred to the east coast. They made us a part of their family, and included us in all of their holidays. We began raising our children together. Tommy just gathered us up and took us in. He made us laugh. Oh, god, how we laughed. He made us comfortable. He showed us his world. He had the best stories...was the best host. He was the best friend. We loved him so.

I grew up with Tommy McCann in Woodside,NY. He was a great guy. He was loved by his family and so many, many friends. Everyone wanted to be his best friend, to be on the teams he was on, to be near him. The tragedy of September 11 took him away from us, but his spirit lives on because of the kind of guy he was. He will remain in our hearts forever. May he rest in peace.

Dear Thomas,
I never had the pleasure to meet you, but I wanted to express my heartfelt sympathy to you and your loved ones who you left behind on September 11.
God made plenty of room in Heaven on that fateful day. You are now living in Heaven with God, because that is where Angels live!
Rest In Peace, Thomas. God Bless you, your loved ones, and your fellow firefighters who perished and those who survived.

We thank Thomas for dedicating his life as a firefighter. To protect, save and care for others comes with a warm and caring heart full of love for his fellow man. May his life and love continue living on in his loved ones and all whose lives have been touched by him. We are extremely sorry for your loss of Thomas. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
