Florence Gregory Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2001.
The Stylings of Disco Flo
Seated in what she thought was too formal a restaurant last winter at Christmas, Florence M. Gregory announced to companions that she was going outside to ask the Salvation Army band on the corner if they knew a certain song. Moments later, the band arrived at the restaurant, took the table next to hers, and played songs for everyone.

"That was my sister," Maureen Petronis said. "She could break the ice anywhere."

Miss Gregory, who was known as "Disco Flo" because of her taste in music, loved people. "She was always smiling and laughing and joking," Mrs. Petronis said. "People were drawn to her."

When she was not working at Aon, where she was a specialist in marine insurance, Miss Gregory, 38, could be found golfing, fishing, cooking, traveling and spending time with her two nieces and three nephews. A longtime resident of Breezy Point in Queens, she was one of three children of Florence and John Gregory.

She was an excellent cook and took particular pleasure in preparing meals for family and friends. Her favorite holiday was St. Patrick's Day, when she would pull out all the stops with corned beef and cabbage.

"She was a fabulous aunt," Mrs. Petronis said.

10 years ago today, I lost a true and life long friend. A women who always had a smile on her face that was so contagious. Florence loved Life and was always ready for a party and had more friends than one could count. Florence, Maureen, Patricia and I were friends from as far back as my memories goes. We were children growing up in and spending our summers in Breezy, and always had fun running the beaches together. We always had laughs and have so many great memories of growing up together. All good memories. We all miss our dear friend and we all know she is with us today and every day. I know Florence would want us all to treasure the great memories that we ALL have of her and cherish every one of them. We were so fortunate to have had such a wonderful, pasionate, Life loving True friend that always made us feel loved..... Until we meet again.

Bless you, Flo - your smile lives on forever.

Miss you Florence. I remember Florence as one of the kindest souls that I have ever met, not a harsh word for anyone. I went to Stella Maris with her and hung out with her in Bklyn and Breezy. As I sit today wearing a pin from six years ago, with Florences picture. I can only think of her as she was...smiling and full of joy.

Five years later and I only now found this site. I hung out with Florence often in our 20's in Breezy and always had a great time with her. Her warmth, energy and compassion were only part of her beautiful attributes. I didn't see Flo as much in our 30's, but interestingly enough we ran into each other for the last time on Mardi Gras only 10 days before 911. We were at the Dugout in Breezy eating ice cream, when she met my one year old daughter for the first time and was so genuinely happy to see us. It was meant to be that I saw her then and said hello...and goodbye. You were an inspiration to many and I think of you often with thoughts that you lived your life fully and with love. Can you ask for anything more?? God bless you and your family.

When I saw Florence's photo in the Portraits book I felt as if I was looking in a mirror. I had found my "twin" only it was too late to actually meet her. From what I have read she was a lot like me...loved the beach and hanging out and her family was extremely important. I visited Manhattan often and wished I would have run into her. I worked at the Trade Center Site in Oct. 01 as a grief counselor....I am now 38, just like her. The only thing that isn't the same in the photo is her teeth are brighter then mine, she is bright spirit and I wish I would have been able to know her...

On the evening of September 11, 2002, I sat on a blanket in the sunken gardens of the Santa Barbara Court House with my friends and family listening to Mozart's Requiem, sung by 140 angelic voices and accompanied by the Santa Barbara Symphony. I wore a red, remembrance heart emblazoned with Florence's name. I am deeply honored to know her in this small, but intimate way.

Dear Gregory Family ~ I can't tell you how broken hearted I am to have to write this note. No one should have to feel such pain. I consider myself Florence's "cousin" even though I was only a cousin by marriage. Unfortunately, my marriage ended in divorce and I lost touch. However, I never will forget the wonderful, vivacious spirit that Florence had. Always a smile on her face, Always the life of the party. What incredible spirit! I remember visiting Breezy Point many years back for Mardi Gras. We couldn't walk down the street without someone stopping to talk to Florence. She was like the "mayor" of this beach community. My heart goes out to your entire family. You were a wonderful cousin and friend. Watch over us now as you sit among the angels.

I miss Florence so much. I met Florence when we were 8 years old in Breezy Point. We grew up together. Everyday I want to call her,"yo Flo". She is the Godmother to my Daughter Shannon and is known as Aunt Florence to my other Children (Catherine, Danny) I had my fourth child, Lauren, three weeks before 911 and Florence was to come out and see her the Sunday before, but I knew it was a beach day and I told her to go to the beach and I will see you next weekend. We had so many good times together. I still can't believe she is gone. I thought we would be together in our 60's playing darts in the Sugar Bowl. Florence is part of all my good memories. We used to say to each other that we are blessed to have stayed such good friends. I can't share those funny memories anymore because nobody else was there for them. We could tell the same stories over and over and still laugh the same. My life is not the same without her. I will never laugh like I laughed with Florence. I miss you buddy. I love ya alot.

Florence and I took a psychology course at night and were in the same class. She was friendly, smart, pretty, and had a tremendous heart. I remember when I got my first car and I showed her the keys and she was one of the few who didn't look at me like I was nuts for being so happy about it.

After I moved to Long Island we kept in touch primarily via e-mail and IM's. Florence was a good friend who loved life and helping other people.

May the Lord take care of you in heaven where I know you are. You have taught me more than you know.

I miss you and I'm sorry.

I met Florence many years ago on jury duty. We hit it off real well as I had a bungalow in Rockaway and had a lot in common. I had her business card for years(still do) and had just found it right before 9/11 and thought about giving her a call.I never had that chance. I just read today that her remains have been identified and I feel like I had to write something. May she watch over all of us and keep us under her angel's wings. She would remember me as "Ippy the Clown". When I told her of my 2nd job she loved it and even asked me to perform at her sister's child's biirhtday party but was was booked at the time. May God give you strength and bless all of you.

I don't know for sure if this is the same Florence that we made a quilt for her mother and sister. I'm with the Freedom Quilt and that quilt that was given at Pier 94 was a gift of love and hopefully comforted. I know I can't reach out and hug you in person so I'm hoping that the quilt is giving you some warmth and comforted. It was made with alot of love and if you ever need a friend to talk to The Freedom Quilters would be more then happy to talk or just listen. I could never imagine the pain you are all going through losing someone so very special to you but I do know that when you make a quilt you put a little of yourself into the quilt I hope you can see that and I really hope you can see the love that we put into it. May the Lord guide you and give you strength to continue and honor Florence by always remembering her and letting others know how very special she was. God bless and take care.

What a beautiful smile and her eyes drew me into the warmth of her heart in the picture of Florence you have shared with us. With such warmth and friendliness radiating from her I wish I would have known her. May Florence's smile, warmth, life and love live on in those who love her. Our hearts are deeply sorry for your loss of Florence and our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Although Florence worked for a competitor, I always looked forward to seeing her at insurance cocktail parties. She always had a smile and was someone I liked to hang out with. I was overjoyed when she accepted my offer to come work at Aon. As I expected, Florence fit right in. She took care of every difficult account we threw at her without a problem. Florence seemed to always be in a good mood. We would talk about our weekends on Monday morning and I would yell at her to wear sun screen. She obviously loved the beach. The last thing I remembered about Florence before 9/11 is that she had a big dart tournament. I later learned that Flo's team did not win the tournament; however, I am sure she still had a great time at the tournament. I will miss Florence and wished I had been able to work with her longer.
