I am telling a story that you Wayne shared with me. On a trip from NY harbor, specifically Pier 17 to Newport Rhode Island. You had spotted a sea turtle in the warm waters in the Atlantic in August of of the point of Long Island. This must have been in the Gulf Stream, that moved warm waters up toward Nantucket. All of a sudden a giant Tiger shark, which is not usually seen in the waters off of Montauk, attacked the sea turtle and you took an oar and beat at the shark to leave the sea turtle alone. That was the kind of man you were, kind and a great person, with a mix of some joking thrown in. Maybe, the turtle got away, but you cared. Take care old buddy.

On the 22nd anniversary of that tragic day, this tribute is long overdue. I knew Wayne through his life-long, dear friend, Mike Ward, who has been a Catholic priest and pastor since 1999. In '91 and '92 Mike and I were roommates in "Hippety Hop Hoboken", where I lived in my 20s and early 30s, while working on Wall Street. Wayne was Mike's best friend, so we frequented many bars together - the three of us were pool sharks and golfers, as well. I can attest that Wayne was the most fun-loving guy I've ever known - I'm 60, so that's saying a lot.
Yes, he had a foul mouth, lol, but he did it with such grace and levity that one could not help but like and love the guy. And yes, he had strikingly handsome good looks, so he was a great wing man at the bars: women were drawn to Wayne like bees to honey because he had a phenomenal sense of humor and stories galore, as well. He was very loyal to his friends - and "a Guy's guy" you'd want in your corner.
I moved to Manhattan in '95, so there wasn't much contact until '99, when Wayne and I attended Mike's deacon ceremony. I moved to DC just before 911, so I lost contact with Mike. When we talked by phone on 2003 and I asked "How is Wayne?" it was only then that I learned of his death. He was a good man: writing this makes me sad, but I needed to pay tribute.
Wayne Hobson was one of a kind, in spades.

We never knew Robert Wayne Hobson, but we've come to know about him, because of a flag. Several weeks after the 9/11 tragedy, my wife Jeanne and I strolled through a local park with hundreds of large American flags, waving in the breeze from poles placed throughout the park. A donation to a fund raiser for victim's families was rewarded with one of the flags. We took one home and later discovered Robert's name, tagged to the pole just below the flag. Each year since then, we've taken that flag out and flown it on Sept. 11, as we are today. But, today was different. Today, we searched for the name Robert Wayne Hobson and found so much about the man. And so, today, 9/11/22, the flag includes a picture of Robert, and our family reads about him, his job at Cantor, his pub and quotes from wife Cindy. We didn't know Robert W. Hobson directly, but we feel we know him indirectly, and perhaps that's what's important....remembering. Now, each year that we place the flag in our yard, it will include his picture, not just his name, and we'll remember just one of many people who deserve to be remembered. I am so very sorry to have just heard this news. I attended Franklin Pierce College with Wayne for a short time in 1983 but remembered him fondly through all of these years. Just this weekend five of us from Pierce met up after 35 years and was told if Wayne's passing in the World Trade Center attacks. He was extremely well-liked on the hall and none were not surprised to hear how well he had done after leaving FPC. Wishing you and yours all the best.

Just heard Wayne's name read at the memorial. It is hard to believe it has been 16 years. I am a stranger, but my grandfather was Bailey Hobson so the Hobson name stood out to me. My Hobson family roots came from Indiana into Kansas and then Oklahoma. 9-11 was such a horrendous day for America. My heart aches for you and for all who lost loved ones. From your "distant Oklahoma cousin".

Your memorial still puts a chill down my spine and the thought of cheering you in celebration of your life and not giving any credit to the cowards who took your life, will stay with me to the end. Hi Wayne,
By chance I happened to find your sister Lisa on Facebook today. We were talking about the politics that led to that awful day. I had no idea you were her brother, even though I had read your memorial tribute before.
As a Muslim I want you and your family to know that what was done to you was wrong. As it always will be, no matter how much time passes. You deserved to live a long and happy life. Your family deserved to see you again and to have you by their side.
For what was done to you and your friends in our name I am truly so very, very sorry.
Whenever I think of September 11, 2001 I will think of Robert Wayne Hobson and his sister Lisa who honors him to this day.
God Bless you Robert. May we all find a way to make this world a better place.
Your Brother In Spirit,
FA

Wayne,
I know you can hear me. And I think of you often.
In 1993, when I began working at Bierbaum-Martin as a board boy, you treated me like an equal, even though you were so much more skilled and experienced than I would ever be. When a few of the old-timers routinely screamed at me to update prices on the board, you would walk past, flash your inimitable grin, and tell me to forget about it, to keep my composure - which, you said, was the best way, in the end, to win.
I will always be grateful to you for your friendship, camaraderie, inspiration and support. And I know that, on 9/11, when so many people around you were screaming, you kept your composure.
Keep the faith, Wayne. And I will always keep you in my thoughts and prayers. See you on the other side....
