Richard Stewart: Looking for Meaning

Hockey brought him records and rings, but Richard Stewart did not think of those times as his glory days, because he had set his eyes on a new goal after moving to New York. Mr. Stewart, 35, involved himself in St. James Episcopal Church on the Upper East Side, where he lived. He served meals to the homeless on Friday nights and was active in the church's young adult group.

"It was fairly clear to us that Rich was looking for more meaning in his life," said the Rev. Craig Townsend, associate rector of St. James. "Most people here didn't know anything about his being a hockey star."

Mr. Stewart started skating at 4, and by the time he was 16 had set the season record for goals scored at the Upland Country Day School in Kennett Square, Pa., a record that lasted 13 years. He went on to become a part of the St. Lawrence University hockey team that made it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association finals in 1988, and is in the university's hall of fame.

Mr. Stewart remained a hockey fan when he started working as a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald six years ago. He put away his skates, but not the helping hand. "Richie was always helping people, no matter who they were," said his mother, Jean. "He lived a spiritual life and always tried to find the bright side of a situation."

Sweet Stewie,
With every strum of the Eagles guitar I think of you. So here we are..all of these years later unable to forget your sheepish smile as you walked on the floor (always a wee bit late) your respectful sensitive and gentleman like manner in culture of crazy, your special and admirable relationship with our beloved John Kren, your unbridled enthusiasm for life and unflappable mission to make the most of every after hour. Most of all your unparalleled abd admirable devotion to and love of your mom, your sister her famioy and all of your family.
We know youre are already gone
but still feeling strong
i hear you singing your victory song
So wherever you are..take it to the limit, take it easy and I wish you Peace.

Peaceful easy feelings my friend,

Richie,

Even though we did not get to know each other well during our years at Lawrenceville, probably because we were always in different dorms, played different sports and never had any classes together that I recall, I find myself often thinking of you and Karen Hagerty, another victim, when I reflect on the 9/11 events from 10 years ago. You both will never be forgotten.

I go to Wrightsville Beach, NC often, and the next time I am there I will drive down to Southport to pay my respects.

May you and Karen rest in peace.

Richie,
I only learned today of your passing. We only met once, and it was at the Philadelphia Spectrum when we competed against one another in the Pepsi Shoot Out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSIxgO6eaJU

I still remember that day like it was yesterday and I know we both had a lot of fun playing in the house the Broad Street Bullies built. That clip has brought a smile to my face as I've watched it numerous times over the years. I'll never look at it quite the same way again, but I will certainly appreciate the fun day we shared even more.

God Bless and you will be missed!

Richie... Thinking of you on this day, as usual. It's rare to meet someone with the openess of heart you always had. I work across the street still, and every day I am reminded of my friend...if there is a bank in heaven, it is there to hold the prayers of the living for those that have moved on. Your account is bigger than a private equity bankers...before this August!!! You really missed a fun month my friend! All the best to your family... he was a very very special man. Amen.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear, dear Richie,

I'm on my knees as this most difficult week approaches ... not for you, for we know you are with Him, but for your loving, all-embracing family. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I know the wonderful man you were on earth because I know your wonderful family. First I pray for your sweet sister Susie and her dear husband Martin, then their (growing !!) family. Then I pray for your gracious mother and loving father, who are both still so very, very proud of you. Then for the extended family I had the pleasure of meeting at your namesake's baptism. And each time I held little Richie (the first time when he was only 1 day new :-) I thought of you, and how I wish I'd known you. Whenever we get to the NEW Wilmington we'll hug them all for you, especially Ben who misses Uncle so much, and little Hannah and Richie. God bless your family, and we'll continue to pray for all of them.

Meet you up there,

Michele

It's Hard to believe that it's almost "Independence Day" again...it seems like just a minute ago that we were walking down Third Ave sharing a brief minute of freedom and joy and even harder to believe that so much time has passed...This holiday couldn't mean even so much more to me this year as I think about just how important the spirit of Joy and Your Free Spirit mean to me (and all of us who love and miss you much)...So, I set out the Red, White and Blue Hershey's Kisses on the desk as part of my many special little symbolic tributes and hope that the sweetness will brighten even just one person's day like you did for me and every one you met...I imagine and I wonder what fireworks might look like from your place in heaven? Richie,

Despite long absences (mostly due to my galavanting around the country), we didn't see one another too often after L'ville, except, of course, at those reunions.

Upon returning to the city you gracefully invited me right in to the people, going-ons, and hockey league. For this I thank you, but more importantly I thank you for being a stand up guy all the time since our days at 10th graders at Lawrenceville.

Miss you all the time (all of us do) and suspect that it'll be that way until we are all reunited once again.

Keep the faith and be sure to take a few front teeth out with powerfully placed slap shots of those who have done this to you and us.

Peace,

Sam

Hey,

All I am going to say to you right now Big Guy is THANK YOU. Between you and me and for anyone who reads this entry: "The rainbow that I saw when I walked outside in Lincroft today at around 5:20pm or so and last Saturday's Belmont Stakes much desired and prayed for results": I know, I am beginning to understand (ok, just a little, I have more to learn), and I definitely believe. Perhaps you can give Our Lord a Bear Hug for moi?I'm sending one your way..Thanks for the save...In other words, I hear ya Darlin', I hear Ya!!!

And You Are In My Heart too,

Always,

Hey There Old Friend,

It rained down on me yesterday while the sun was still shining on one half of the street and as I stood there staring up at the sky searching for the rainbow it reminded me of one day in December that sent you running for a camera to catch the light show as you walked along the Upper East...I remember laughing with you about it later that day and I was wondering,...well now that you're up in Heaven, can you send one my way? Memorial Day weekend barbeques just aren't the same anymore....Missing you and hoping that you are resting peacefully,

Richie,

Even though we saw only each other on ocassion after Lawrenceville, I never felt distance from you or the laughs all of us shared. Your friendship is a comfort, and it always felt like I had seen you just yesterday even when we hadn't talked in months. After 9/11, I saw firsthand how many others feel the same way about you. I know that you are in a better place now, and for that, at least, I am thankful. My heart goes out to the many who are bonded by both their love and mourning of you. You are greatly missed, my friend.

Fatty,

It has been some time since we last spoke that morning on 9/11. I remember your last words to me like it was yesterday. There has not been a day gone by that I have not thought of you, your friendship, and what you meant to me and to my family. The girls ask if you are an angel, and ask if you are ok. The barney chair sits in Phoebe's room, I read her a book last night with my head rested upon it. I found a picture of you this weekend, and it brought tears to my eyes. You are missed, you are cherished...and I will never forget. Thank you for being there for me all those years, I never knew how much it meant to me - until now.

Peace,

We met only once but e-mailed each other often as rivals in the NPL. You and G-Man made a formidable squad with FUKU. Your trash talk was even better than your play. I rue not going to Vegas for the draft to see you again in person but will remember you through the many tales of the Duffy Brothers and others whom were close to you. Your spirit will endure, thus you will always be with us. Save us a rinkside seat up there and keep an eye on us. You will be missed but never forgotten.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Rich,

Thank you for showing me the meaning of the word "family". I can never say thank you enough for all you did for me to establish Amy and myself in New York. You were, are, and will always be the big brother I never had. Thank you for always looking out for me. The city is so much larger and colder without you here. We miss you dearly, but know we will be reunited one day.
