Joseph Giaccone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
He Knew No Stress

Not too long ago, Sondra Giaccone broke it to her husband: "Joe, you're starting to look weathered."

She meant it as a compliment. Joseph Giaccone, 43, a vice president at Cantor Fitzgerald's Espeed division, had acquired the look of a man completely at ease in his own skin.

As much as he traveled for business, work stress did not own his face. He found the time to coach baseball for his son, Max, and to attend Nutcracker performances with his daughter, Alex. When the Giaccones moved to Monroe Township, N.J., he made visiting his parents, Elizabeth and Vincent in Queens, a priority.

He had developed the unusual ability to stop on a dime and relax instantly. On autumn Sundays, he would bake fresh bread while sipping a serious wine, his special Bolognese sauce bubbling on the stove. Andrea Bocelli would be soaring through the speakers; the Jets would be on TV. Bread done, Jets won, guests arriving, bliss! For nothing made Mr. Giaccone happier than feeding people.

So comfortable was he that he could laugh at himself. When Mr. Giaccone saw a video of himself at a family reunion in California, learning to surf in a wet suit, he cracked up. "I look like a pregnant seal!" he shouted.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on January 20, 2002.

Joe Giaccone, 43, passion spiced his life

Joe Giaccone was a man of strong passions.

He didn't just like fine wine, he was a true connoisseur.

He didn't just like to cook, he loved to cook.

He didn't just put in time at his job as head of telecommunications for eSpeed, a division of Cantor Fitzgerald, he threw himself into creating and maintaining the firm's vital worldwide network.

"The word I would use about Joe was 'passionate.' He put his heart and soul into everything he did," said Jim Day, a family friend and former co-worker.

Take cooking: Mr. Giaccone, 43, loved to barbecue, but to him that meant so much more than tossing burgers on a gas grill. He insisted on charcoal, and was known to try homemade grilled pizza, lamb chops, tuna steaks -- the latter with a memorable puntanesca sauce.

"He loved to give people food," said James, one of his two younger brothers. "That's what he loved: a house jammed full of people, with him running from room to room serving everybody."

Mr. Giaccone, his wife, Sondra, and their two children, Alex and Max, moved into their "dream house" in Monroe Township just seven months ago -- a house whose stove he hand-picked. "He just got his big new Viking oven -- that he can't even use now," Day said.

Over the years, Day's workplace friendship with Mr. Giaccone expanded to include their wives and children. He counted Mr. Giaccone as his mentor. "He knew how to combine hard work with compassion," he said. "He looked to his employees' strengths, not to their shortcomings."

In an twist of fate, Mr. Giaccone was the catalyst behind the company's provisions for a "disaster recover site" in Rochelle Park, which has allowed the company to continue doing business after the destruction of their World Trade Center offices.

Sondra Giaccone said that on a clear day, you could see the World Trade Center from the front bedroom of their new house. "Joe would always joke that he would flash the lights when he was coming home," she said.

Prayers of peace to your family and friends. Heard your brother, Jim, today on The Moth. You are remembered. You are loved. You are.

To this day I remember Joe. I was a young sales rep at Cisco Systems selling network services to Cantor/Espeed. Joe looked past the business relationship and genuinely made an effort to connect with me. He was that kind of person. I remember we shared Italian sandwiches for lunch and talked about things other than work. He loved the view from his office and was so proud to show this Californian the amazing view. He was a genuine person that stays with me to this day. On this day I raise a glass of fine wine to Joe. We will always remember.

I still think of Joe often and never miss an opportunity to talk about him whenever someone mentions 9/11 or disaster recovery. He was a joy to work for and to be around, both during and after work. He built a great team at Kidder Peabody (Pre-Cantor) and instilled a sense of comradery and passion in all of us. We worked hard and played hard together. I will carry his memory forever.

I had the honour of meeting Jim in August 2018 and still feel incredibly honoured, humble and privileged to hear the story of his Brother Joseph. I kept my promise after our chat and found Josephs name at the memorial. Sitting here in Melbourne, Australia tonight I am thinking of Joseph. I didnt know Joseph, however, he will most certainly never be forgotten from my little corner of the world. Thank you for sharing your story Jim.

New York mai, 9th 2017.
I knew a visist to the 9/11 Memorial come with great emotion, but I never imagined it would be this overwhelming.
What used to be the twin towers is now an imense emptiness with the deep of four stories. A curtain of water streams through dark walls like infinite tears. And at the center, a void that drains the water as the victins were in this tragedy.
Surrounding this void, imense plaques in memorian of the 3000 victins. The grandiosity of the place portrays the relevance of this event and the eternal grief.
At the entrance, a sign: We invite the visitors to graze thier hands upon the names. Some names have fresh flowers, reminding you of the importance of that person to a special other. Contemplating that enormous emptiness, the names, the sound of water, and the memory of tha horrible day, I was interruptedby a dry and abrupt voice: Excuse me. I stepped away without understanding the woman. She wets her hands, grazes it upon a name. The water drips upon the name, as tears of a never ending heartache.
The emotion came up in one strong blow. She's gonne and left me with the pain of an absence and the certanty that: We don't get used to the death of someone we love. With time we get used to living alone.

I heard your brother speak of you on The Moth today and thought the least I could do was Google your name. I'm glad I did. I'll try to find the good in people today the way they say you did.

I saw your brother's tribute to you today Sunday 9/11/2016. It was so touching and when I heard him say "15 years is like 15 seconds" and that it still hurts, I immediately started to cry ... that is so true. I feel the same about my brother and my mom and feel like it was just yesterday that I lost them.

I wish your family peace.

Picture of my dad and Jim after the tour. Thank you for sharing Joe's story and the story of thousands of others that day.

Thinking of you and your entire family as we learned your story and the events of that tragic day from your incredible brother Jim who was our tour guide this past February. I cant say enough of Jim's strength, character, and compassion as he spoke of you that day. It has made an everlasting impact on myself and my family. We will never forget.

Today, the 13th anniversary of 9/11, I again, as always think of Joe. He was our (all girls)softball coach many years ago. I also went to high school with his brother Jimmy. I have many happy funny memories of him, and how he put up with all us girls driving him nuts. He was a kind, funny, and encouraging person. We lost most games but he always made us feel like winners. He will never be forgotten. My heartfelt thoughts go to his family, today and everyday.

I was at tribute center yesterday July 20, 2014. Your brother Jim was our wonderful guide. He left such a heartfelt message about you in my heart. May you rest in peace !!! Not even knowing you personally, I feel he has engraved a piece of u in my heart. I will never forget my tour. It has left an everlasting impression.

I don't know if this book gets checked anymore but I figured if it did this might show people still care. I was contacted by the tribute center today and told that a Jim Giaconne requested me to support a tour on April 26th, Joe's birthday. I readily excepted and decided to do some research on this man Joe Giaconne. From what I have read it sounds like I would have liked Joe. I look forward to meeting Jim and hearing more about Joe. I can relate to you all because I lost my father Firefighter Robert Crawford in the south tower. It sounds like we all knew really great men.

hello,
I was watching the 10th anniversary memorial today and I heard the message of Joseph' sister asking for a sign from her brother. She was asking for a rainbow. I just wanted to let her know that I am a newyorker who was here 10 years ago and i saw it all happen. but i'm originally from belgium and my boyfriend was watching a soccer game at anderlecht stadium in brussels, belgium and sent me a picture of a giant rainbow over the stadium just after she made her statement. i can send her the picture but not via this website. hopefully she will get this message. i too look for rainbows as a sign of my cousin who i lost in february of 2001 at the age of 17 to leukemia. i just wanted to let joseph' sister know that joseph sent her a beautiful rainbow. if you would like me to send it to you please e-mail me at [email protected]
my heart goes out to you and your family and we will never forget.
yours truly,
chloe

I was cleaning my office today and came across a pin I wore on 9/11/2002. We performed in the "Rolling Requiem" that day and my pin had the name Joseph M. Giaccone on it. The pin also had the words "Never Forget". I haven't and I thought I would share this.

Sondra, Alex & Max,
So much time has past, yet the horror of that day will live on in me forever. I think of Joe often as there are so many things that remind me of him. Just the other day a friend was talking about Jagermeister and I can still hear Joe doing his pirate arrrrggg. (sp???) LoL

There have even been occasions at a quick glance I see him walking in crowd.

He was just such a great person, which I know you guys already know that.

He is forever missed, but will never be forgotten.

Warmest Regards,

I had the pleasure of getting to know about Joseph through my blogging hobby and I have grown to admire the way he lived his life and his humanity. Joseph was a fun loving man who was able to share this zest with those around him enriching their lives. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones and i pray that the pain for them becomes easier to bare as the years roll on. Sincerely, Listenstoplants.

Yesterday I conducted the Mozart "Requiem" with the Grays Harbor Symphony and Community Chorus. The memorial was presented at the First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen, Washington. About 85 people performed and about 500 people attended. The program was recorded and broadcast to our community by the local radio station. I had the honor of wearing the name Joseph M. Giaconne on my heart as I conducted. Know that the events of 9/11 have touched hearts far and wide.

If you are interested, I would love to send you a copy of our memorial concert. It is not professionally recorded or performed, but it truly from the heart. Please feel free to contact me it you would like a recording.

On the front of the program I placed a quote from Leonard Bernstein - "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before".

To Sondra, Alex, and Max

My thoughts, prayers, and Love are with you today as always.

The night sounds, in their droning echo show

brief promise that his spirit whispers still

throughout this world he left scant days ago

yet loved so fully in his time to fill.

A heart so full of love, so quick to fly,

As long as Earth shall live, can never die.

It is with great pain that I write these words about my old buddy, Joe. Although years have gone by since I last saw him, I will always be thankful for the many great times we shared, about growing up in Queens, about skiing and YES concerts, and, with Suzanne, introducing him to Sondra. I rest easier knowing that he's Home with God, and we will meet again someday.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I will always remember Joe and his knowledge of wine. My fiancee and I had a blast going to the Santana concert with he and his wife two summers ago. Joe's wife and I had our best friends and lovers taken away on 9/11, but no one can ever take away our wonderful memories.

To The Family of Joseph Giaconne;

I am writing to let you know that I selected Joseph's name on a wrist band that I'll be wearing every day. The name of the band is Mercy Band. I received it last evening at our church in Ft. Lauderdale (Calvary Chapel).

I will be praying every day for you, his family. I know this Christmas will be very difficult for you. Please know that God cares very deeply, also.

I left my E-mail address if you would like to contact me.

Thank you for giving me the priviledge of praying for you. May God in His loving kindness ease your burden.

Sincerely,

Nancy Macdonald
