Planning the Dream
David M. Ruddle, who was 31, had a big distinctive laugh and a plan. Every spare dollar that he earned as a union carpenter went into his savings, and he was going to use the money to build himself a house.
Not just any old house, his sisters said, but one that would be customized to meet all his desires, fanned by a childhood spent in apartments in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx.
There would be a hilly site, and the house would sit right at the crest. And there would be a swimming pool, indoors, as well as another one, outdoors, that would blend straight into the landscape. Maybe the house would be upstate, so he could ride snowmobiles nearby in the winter. Maybe it would be in Florida, with the ocean lapping along the property's edge. But in any case, it would exist, and it would belong to him.
He had been his mother's gift, born after his brother died of meningitis, said his sister Maureen Murphy. "He was like the king, in her eyes," she said. His mother helped him find a job in the carpenters' union, said their sister Trish Gallagher.
Before his death, he had lived downstairs from Ms. Murphy, who is four years older and idolized him. "He loved to hear and tell jokes," she said. "And even if they weren't funny, he'd laugh his head off. And you couldn't help laughing with him." He has a daughter, Amanda, 11, whom he took to amusement parks whenever he could. They loved each other, too.

I remember it had been a year or two since I last seen you one day. I went through the old neighborhood and we stopped by mago's grocery store and you were in a car parked infront of the store, and you jumped out and gave me the biggest 5 minute hug and told me you missed me and asked me to send your love to the family then we exchanged numbers.. and then 2 weeks later I get a call and was told you were in the wtc and at that moment that last hug you gave meant so much more to me. I miss you everyday, and think of you often, you are gone but never forgotten. Rest In Paradise David. I love you, and to your family I send all my love.

Another year has gone by and they say that it get's easier but for me it's just the opposite. I miss your laugh and your crazy/loving personality. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about you. I wish that I could see you one last time just to give you a big hug and kiss. I miss you so much and as it gets closer to Sept 11th I get more and more emotional and angry that those cruel people took you away from our family. You were one in a million Uncle David! David, was in Baily park on Fathers Day, its been 8 years since I moved out of the building so seeing a bunch of old friends was nice, but I also thought about you and spoke about you and shared a few stories with a few people. Hey David, we didn't know each other personally, but whenever I went to the bodega across the street on Ft. Independence Street, you would be there with your buds hanging out. I remember seeing you there a few days before 9/11 and after that terrible day when I saw the tribute to you on Ft. Independence, I couldn't believe it was you. I remember how cute you were. West 234th Street between Bailey and Broadway is now named after you. Your family did a heck of a job getting that done in your memory.
