Capturing the Scene

From the windows of her office on the 93rd floor of 2 World Trade Center, Suzanne M. Youmans would photograph the city and watch ships making their way up the river.

"She liked to work in tall buildings," said her brother Bill, adding that one of her first jobs was in Brooklyn's tallest building. "It was a big deal to her."

She was 60 years old and a technical assistant in the global-services division at Aon Insurance who helped the brokers write up certificates and take care of other client needs. At the end of the day she would take her camera into the conference room and capture the sunset, said one colleague, Juanita Daley.

She had the gift of humor and often used it to poke fun at herself. When some of her friends held a dinner in her memory not long ago, they were pretty sure what her opinion would have been. "She'd say, `I always wanted fifteen minutes of fame, but this is ridiculous,' " said a colleague, Doris Durando.

At home in Brooklyn, she collected Beanie Babies, antiques and animal figurines, cared for three beloved cats and watched old movies on television. "She loved `Doctor Zhivago,' " said her sister, Mary Kessler.

She also taught herself to paint with oils, and gave some of her paintings to her brother. They show mountains, trees and lakes; there is not one tall building.

I received Suzanne's name from my church. We all received names of victims of 9-11 to pray for in the weeks leading up to the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. I will be keeping Suzanne and her family in my prayers over the coming weeks.

Suzanne---We worked together many years ago at Chase Bank. You were my supervisor and we had many laughs together at lunch in the cafeteria. We lost touch over the years and I was unable to find you when you left the bank. I remember you as an animal lover with an incredible sense of humor. I miss you and wanted you to know I never forgot you. I pray you are safe with the angels.

Suzanne,

You were my mothers friend,Jean Tifford(NANA). My mother and brother sold the plants outside theWTC. You had adopted my kittens.

Not a day goes by my mother doesnt cry for you,you must have been a special person. She holds all the cat beanie babies you gave her every week, and asked for a doll for Christmas so she could name her after you,and she did,and she hugs her every day.I'm so sorry such a wonderful lady is gone,I'm sure your a beautiful angel!.I know my mom will never stop thinking of you,and speaking about you, just as she did when you were here.Till we all meet again,we hold the love in our hearts.

Love,Annamae and Jean

IF I KNEW

Hold your loved ones close today,

Whisper in their ear,

Tell them that you love them

And you'll always hold them dear,

For tomorrow is promised no one,

Young and old alike,

And today may be your last chance

to hold your loved ones tight.

Dear Suzanne,

I chose your name for our performance of the Mozart Requiem tomorrow morning, at the first anniversary of your passing. I think of you with love and offer my voice in memory of your life, joy and humor. Thank you for sharing this moment with me, and for your sacrifice. I hope to gain some of the perspective you must now have, as we sing tomorrow. Blessings to you.

In memory of Suzanne Youmans

We did not know Suzanne, but my husband is the brother of Cam Sutton who works for Aon. I came across this on the internet and wanted to express our deepest sympathy. I have thought of all the lives lost that day and especially of the ones from my brother-in-laws office and it still hurts deeply. Our deepest deepest sympathy to the family.

I wore my Mercy Band this week and my thoughts were with Suzanne's family this past July 4th holiday. Even though I never knew Suzanne personnaly there is a certain bond wearing the bracelet and at times during the day being made to reflect on the terrible thing she had to experience. I was so glad to be able to know a little about her and to know what she looked like. God Bless her family.

I have volunteered to make a quilt block in Suzanne's memory. I didn't know her but in doing research on her for the block I have found that she and I have/had many common interests. I would like to add her date of birth to the block but can't locate it. If anyone knows this info please email me, [email protected]. Suzanne may be gone but she's not forgotten.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
