Robert Parro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2001.
On the Truck He Stood Tall

At the firehouse they called him Little Man," Robert Parro's brother John said. "Because he was kind of the smallest guy there, but when he got on the fire truck, they said he grew like six inches." He was born to be a firefighter, his mother, Virginia Parro, recalled. A firefighter, and a helper. On his days off, he worked as a handyman, and his friends and neighbors benefited from his expertise.

"He'd be the first person there to help you," said John Daly of Levittown, N.Y., who grew up there with Mr. Parro. "Anything to do in the house, sheetrocking a room, something with plumbing, all you had to do was call and he was there."

Mr. Parro, 35, and Mr. Daly were part of a group of about ten couples in Levittown who would travel together. It started with the guys camping or hunting together, then later everyone went to Acapulco or the Bahamas. The group even joined Mr. Daly on his honeymoon.

Once children arrived — Mr. Parro leaves a wife, Karen, and a son, John, 4 — the gang began going up to Lake George.

"It's going to be tough this year," Mr. Daly said. "We want to go. We want to still do that."

We grew up well, didn't we Robbie.
Playing on Hyacinth Road, where the future didn't matter.
A time of stingrays, acorns and frisbees.
That's how I will always remember you.

Sending our heartfelt sympathy to your family. May God continue to give the needed strength. Robert touched many others and will always be fondly remembered. May the time finally come when these acts of violence are ended and no longer break up families.

I never met you Robert, but from everything I have been told by Your Mom Virginia, and your brother Keith, I know we would have been Friends. I hurt for your Family, as do many others. I know you're watching over them, and they are safe. Everyone from that fateful day, who scarificed ALL, will live on in our hearts.

I am not sure if we are related, but regardless we are brothers in the Fire Service. I am a Capt. I was on duty the day of 9/11. I had volunteered to be apart of one the USAR teams that went back from California to assist with the rescue/recovery operation. Today my youngest daughter is there at the memorial. It is an emotional time for her at 18 years old to see the memorial and to realize the vastness of how many were lost this day. It make me reflect that what we do and that there is no greater love then to lay down ones life for another (John 15:13). My prayers go out to your family, (Karen and John), and to your department family. Many gave some that day, Robert you gave your all. God Bless

Robert Parro at 9-11 Memorial, 23rd Feb 2014

Robert Parrett

February 26, 2014

I did not know Mr Parro or his family, but can only express my condolences, however belated, even all these years on.

I stumbled across his name (mine bears a close resemblance to his) whilst visiting the 9-11 memorial during a vacation from England last weekend, and for obvious reasons Robert Parro's name both stood out and moved me.

Mr Parro's name has stayed with me these last few days and from a brief amount of research I have seen Mr Parro to have been a good family man and a key part of his community; a fine figure to look up to, and one evidently missed.

However trivial this might sound, please know that when the anniversary comes around this September, there will be a man in London thinking of Robert Parro, wishing his family and his friends well, and thanking him for the sacrifice he made trying to help others.

All the best,
Robert Parrett

Here I am again... now 12 years later. I have this bracelet that I would love to give your son. It has your name on it... I have had it since 2001. It has gone to Iraq with me as well as other places... I would love to pass it on but I am finding it hard to part with. I have no idea who you were, but you have been a part of my life now for 12 years....

Time has come and gone, but the memories of 9/11 are still in our minds. We as Firefighter's think of what you men went through on that awful. I once again will be carrying your name and picture as I ascend up the stairs for Kansas City 9/11 memorial stair climb. I carried your picture and name last year and I will continue this tradition. Our prayers of support are with your young son and wife.

My daughter and I visited the 911 memorial yesterday 4-09-2013... Looking at the site and reading all the names was overwhelming, I kept thinking about how these people were so much more than names engraved on a memorial and wished a knew more about them... As I walked around reading the names and holding my tears I stopped and read the name... Robert Parro... It seemed to stand out and I couldn't walk away... With a little reading I found he was a firefighter, husband, father, son, brother and friend to many, a true hero and loved by many, I had never heard the name until yesterday but I will never forget it now as long as I live... It is etched in my heart and mind as it is on the memorial, this family will forever be in my prayers.

Sept. 11 2012 myself and numerous other firefighters were involved in a stair climbing event to pay tribute to those that sacrificed their lives during 9-11-01. We set forth a goal to climb a floor for each brother\sister firefighter that died during that time. We all climbed in gear and out of gear 343 floors= 13.5 times up our biggest highrise condo in my town. We each picked a firefighter to represent and Rob Parro was my brother and had my back to push me thru the pain to complete our goal. Thanks Rob and Family for being there to pay tribute to your sacrifice! God Bless and see you on the other side bro! Sarasota County Firefighter--Jason Parisi

I don't know if we could have been relative. I'am 67 years old, born in Cleveland, Ohio. I know my Dad and Mom started in the New York area. Dear Parro Family,

I did not know your son, husband and father, but I represented him today in Colorado in the memorial stair climb. 120 flights of stairs were hard to do as I have a nervous system disability, however, when I felt I wanted to quit, I looked at his photo on my heart and was inspired to push on. I will be forever grateful for his spirit and incredible lesson of inner strength to do something for someone I never knew. My husband is a firefighter and each day he lives for people he never knew. I have a new understanding and respect for that today and my love, blessings and peace will be with you always.

Remebering and Honoring you today Robert. Thinking back to when we were kids growing up together... you were always the dare-devil, never afraid to step up to the plate and just do it. I can't count the number of
times I've thought of you since that horrific day. In my thoughts you're still a little boy playing baseball and football, a little boy who when he had a bloody nose said, "my drasal is bleeding" instead of my nostril. A teenager who walked like he had a stiff neck after you took a shower because you didn't want your hair to get messed up. Rob, you are missed more than you could ever imagine.

In Sept of 2001, I sent a card to the Parro family , Karen and to his Son, although I never knew them I was just reaching out to somebody who lost someone on that terrible day, for I live in Iowa and just needed to do something, Later I recieved a beautiful thank-you card back from Karen, I just re-read the card, and I still remember Robert, and hope they are doing Okay, In the card I said , how much the sacrifice meant to me, and to John- that even this midwest lady thinks of him and his family, then and today. Thoughts and prayers again to you all on this day 9-11-2011. Becky Manship, Iowa.

I'm a Fireman in the Sacramento area.
In Sacramento 343 of us climbed 110 stories in honor of our brothers on 9/11. We each pinned a name of one of our fallen brothers over our name on our turnout jacket. I carried Robert E. Parro's name. At the top I placed his name with the other 342 Firemen on a display. There was a retired FDNY Fireman there who was at 9/11 and oversaw the event. Although I never knew him I wanted to say he will never be forgotten and his brothers love him. Thank you Robert and may God have a special place for you buddy, and God bless your family.

I was John's teacher at St Francis play day school...i knew Karen and met Robert a few times when he came to pick John up...John was the cutest and funniest little boy and myself and the other 2 teachers just got such a kick out of him. We were shocked and very sad when we heard about Robert losing his life on that horrible day. I owned a local bar after leaving the school...and his funeral was at the church next door to the restaurant. i stood outside the day of the funeral, and watched the casket go by along with hundreds of fireman paying their respects...i welcomed some of them into my restaurant and it was a very emotional day for me...my son lost his dad when he was 11..not in such a tragic way..but none the less grew up without a dad...he is now a volunteer fireman in Levittown and wishes to join the NYC fire dept ..i have very mixed feeling on this..but as Roberts mom said he was born to be a fireman...i feel my son was too...I pray for Karen and her family....and they are in my thoughts quite often....God Bless them.....Miss Joanne

I didn't know Rob, but I am a native of Levittown currently living in South Carolina. I attended Division Avenue High School and would have graduated in 1978 had I not moved. My family lived right behind Rob's in Levittown when we were kids. I knew Rob from the time he was born until we moved to Tennessee. I really regret that our families lost touch over the years. I still have such great memories of him and his family. Summers were the best: all of us swimming in our pool then jumping the fence and swimming in their pool; all the family cookouts in our backyards; and the all-night monopoly games.

To Karen, John, Mr. Daly, other of Robert's friends, Michelle and members of the family:

My deep, deep condolences. I sat this afternoon at home and read Robert's biography in The New York Times. What a fabulous man he must have been! What joy of life with his friends and his family! And a hero himself, giving his life to save others - a profound Christian trait in a young man. I pray for him, knowing that he is with his Creator, Whose comfort I cherish over each of you who experience the loss. God bless each and all of you. Be sure and tell young John what a hero his dad was and to live in the eternal presence of his memory. All of you, my respect.

I don't really know what to say. I miss you so much. My life isn't the same without you. I know that you are a hero. You are my angel watching over me. I love you. You are my big brother and I will never forget that. Hey I might just have my first date in the backyard. You showed alot of courage and I am very proud of you. Rob I miss you more and more each day. I wish you could come home. My heart is with you. I love you. <33

Dear Robert,

What words can express your loss? Sadness, sorrow, sympathy, hero and Angel come to my mind. I never met you Thomas, but I do know it takes a special person to become a firefighter and it takes a hero to sacrifice his life for people he never knew. It takes an Angel to live with God and I know that is where you now reside. God Bless you, our loved ones and fellow comrades who you left behind and the other Angels who entered Heaven with you on September 11, 2001.

Rest In Peace and please watch over your friends and family.

I remember Robert growing up, as Jimmys Little brother. God Bless you Robert and all of your family. John, Jimmy, Keith!, parents, wife and children.

You truly are a hero.

I remember Robbie from him growing up around the corner from me, he was a friend to my son and daughters. May God bless him and keep him at peace.

We are extremely sorry for your loss of Robert. We appreciate him dedicating his life to helping others. Such a dedication comes with a warm and caring heart. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
