Robert Linnane Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2001.
Friends Around the World
Robert Linnane was a horrible dresser. With the ridiculous bright red shorts that he jogged in while training to join the Fire Department and the mismatched get-ups that he called evening wear, he was a walking affront to the eyes.

"We would have to make him go inside and change," said Al Belfiore, a friend.

This shortcoming was tolerated by Firefighter Linnane's friends all over the world because of his cheerful, easygoing and tolerant personality.

An enthusiastic traveler, he had worked for Delta Air Lines for nearly a decade before becoming a firefighter. He took every opportunity to fly off and meet new people, and he often had a pass to bring one of his New York friends along.

"It was a life that people liked hearing stories about," said his brother Vincent.

It was a life that ended at 33 as a New York firefighter — he had passed the daunting physical tests and joined the department after his 30th birthday.

His body was identified by the Grateful Dead tattoo on his ankle. His favorite song, a Dead standard titled "Sugaree," says:

I'll meet you at the Jubilee

If that Jubilee don't come

Maybe I'll meet you on the run.

Here we are 20 years later, and I’m still wearing your “Mercy Band” bracelet every day, next to my Grateful Dead bracelets. I thought of you today while listening to them, and thinking of the sacrifice you made, you are not forgotten.
Sugaree to you.

I am a volunteer firefighter in Plymouth Meeting Pa. I had the opportunity to attend FDIC for the first time this year. My gracious fiends and family donated over $800 for the NFFF stairclimb. I had the honor of getting his name tag. I can't express my gratitude for the sacrifice he and the others made. We still have your six and will never be forgotten.

In the town I live in Middle Tn there is a craze going around where people paint and hide ricks. A group of people painted a rock for each victim of the 9/11 and placed them at our 9/11 memorial and Firefighter's Memorial. The idea is that you pick a rock and learn about the name on it. That you say a prayer for their family and help keep their memory alive in a sea of names. I took my boys to the firefighter's memorial today to each pick a rock. As soon as I saw your name I was drawn to it. Thank you for your sacrifice on that day. My thoughts and prayers are with your friends and family. I will think of you and pray every year.

Never met you but attended your funeral at St. Thomas 16 years ago. A grateful City and Nation salutes your heroism and that of your brother FDNY firefighters, police other First Responders and office worker heroes who also died that day. RIP

I was in Labasheeda , Ireland in September 2015 and was looking for information on my Gramdmother Delia Theresa Linnane. I met a man in Labasheeda who told me his wife had met a man from NY named Robert Thomas Linnane who was also looking for information on the Linnanes in Labasheeda. He was working for Delta Airlines at the time. The man let me know that his wife showed him an old homestead where the Linnanes worked the land and lived. I also saw it. And a graveyard where Linnanes were buried. At the end of our visit, I was told that Robert was killed on 9/11. It was heartbreaking to hear that news. I have many family members that were with the NYFD and NYPD who answered the call that awful day. I will think of Robert every year as I believe that we are related through our Irish heritage. RIP Robert.

I post every year on Sept. 11 but this year I couldn't. You know why. Along with my Grandmother you were in my thoughts and prayers and of course, you are always in my heart. I still think of you and all the times we spent together. You are special to me. I continue to love you with all my heart.

To Robert, like all other Americans, I owe a great debt. For the highest form of heroism for his nation and its people. I never met him but learned of his heroism today from his loving Delta co-worker, Patria Baradi Pacis. Your loss I will remember with extreme gratitude as long as I live. I will henceforth fight on to prevent hate, conflict, war, nuclear weapons, gun violence even stronger now in your honor. Let us all make better use of good means we have to make this a better world, including them United Nations for which I worked in NYC. Rest in peace, Robert the Hero.

This morning I had the honor and privilege of carrying Robert's name with me as I participated in the 2013 Firefighter Memorial Challenge in Lexington, KY. With Robert with me, I climbed 110 flights of steps in his honor & in honor of the other brave firefighters who so selflessly gave it all to save others on Sept. 11, 2001. Robert was truly courageous. He is remembered as a hero. He is continuing to touch the lives of others even 12 years after his passing. I know he has touched mine. Thank you, Robert for your service. May your family and friends continue to find peace knowing that your legacy lives on.

I didn't know Robert personally. I came to know about him on Sept 11, 2002 during a memorial service in Frankfort Kentucky. At the end of the memorial service we were asked to go to a display and remove a name and pray for the family. I was privileged to pray for Roberts family every day for two years. I still the card that has Roberts name on it. I pray that the Linnane family has found peace. I will never forget!!!

I visited the 9/11 memorial pools in July and took a picture of a red rose laying on the names. So I took a chance and found Robert's name here. As I stood looking at all the names on the memorial my heart was breaking but at the same time I was thinking about all the brave people that died trying to save a life. I had no idea that all the names surrounding that beautiful red rose were firefighters.

My dear old friend Bob!! We shared lots of miles and memories, crazy teenagers, chasing around the GD, laughing, dancing, happy with life at that moment. When I found out you had "grown up" & became a very admirable and upstanding member of the NYFD I knew you were again doing something that brought happiness and peace of mind into your life. Though we hadn't talked in years I can only speak from my heart of how proud I am to have been a part of your life. What a journey life takes us on...."if I knew the way, I would take you home..."

Somewhere down the Irish heritage line we're family.. I eerily came across your name today just scanning the memorial plaque. Out of all the names I briefly looked at yours popped out at me. Oddly enough I'm a huge Dead fan. From what I've read about you, you were a fantastic person and I wish I could have known you and even though I never will I'm proud to have the same last name. Rest in Peace.

Though I have never meet you, my son picked a mercy bracelet with your name on this the 10th anniversary. He is only 4 years old and loves super heroes. Even though he is too young to understand the events that took place, he understands what a hero is. I am thankful that he can look at his bracelet with your name and see what a true hero is. He believes Superman lives at the firestation and he is right you are all Super Men. Thank you.

Robert,
I never met you, but when I read about you in the NYT, I thought "there is a person I would have loved to have met". Maybe we bumped into at a Grateful Dead show somewhere around the country, or maybe it was the fact that my sister was a flight attendant for Delta until recently, but your story made me feel the loss deeply. I have worn a mercy band bracelet with your name on it for almost 10 years now, and have rarely, if ever, taken it off. You have traveled with me every day, have been with me for the birth of my daughter, and have been to a lot of great concerts. You will be with me in a few weeks when we go see Bobby and Phil and "Further" here in Oregon. Seeing your name daily reminds me that life can be short and we can all try to be and do better to be an everyday hero to someone. Today I am thinking of you, your heroism and our great country, and I'll raise a glass and some great tunes in your honor.

Bobby,

You are always in my thoughts and prayers. Your picture has hung on my living room wall since the day we said goodbye at St. Thomas Church. It is a constant reminder of my Hero. I remember you as a kid and all the years growing up with my nephews and sons. You always had that beautiful Irish Grin that just lit up a room. You were truly a beautiful person. To know you was to love you. I remember you running down Hempstead Gardens Drive and stopped to talk to me and you told me you were training to become a firefighter. You were so excited and proud. I know you and I knew you could do anything you put your mind to. I can see you running into the towers that day excited at being able to help someone. You never , for one second, hesitated at the danger. You were a Hero and always will be. You are the only person I know who continues to make friends ten years after you left this earth. People just can't help but love you. I am so proud of you Bobby and I know we will all see you again someday. See you in Heaven and "What A Long Strange Trip it's Been". I Love You Bobby. Hey Buddy, I always loved to run into you at Rhythm and Brews or at a local get together. I loved getting into a deep conversation. With me being a type A personality and you being a laid back listener, it worked out perfect. One thing that people must know about you, was that you were really a good person. Im not talking about that good guy tittle they give to some average guy when he dies too soon. Im talking about a true salt of the earth man. The last time we spoke I was struggling to break out as a stock broker and you were struggling with the idea of moving to N Carolina to become a fireman and still have hours at Delta. You were very encouraging to me as I shared my fears and always made me feel like I was a lock to succeed. It was not only with words, but that smirk and slight laugh, which said, cmon dude. Your out of your mind. Your gonna do just fine. Anyway, the night of 9/11 I made calls to find out if I should be aware of anyone that I know that could be missing or killed. When I found out you were missing I remember yelling WHAT!!!! WHO!!! HOW!!! I thought he was in N. Carolina??? Anyway Friend. I wish you could have seen the turn out for your farewell ceremony. The church was packed to the rafters. Every story about you was always the same message. Special guy, easy going, loved by EVERYONE , and never judgmental. Those are the characteristics of a special individual. I just wanted to let you know, that your Picture has been blocking my speedometer in my car for 10 years. Im sure your up in heaven, chilling out in an unmatching outfit just listening to the angels around you. Bye for now friend.

There were 343 New York City Firefighters killed that day in the Twin Towers and another 20 police officers but there were many heroes..people who let others get on the elevators...who stayed with the injured rather than try to escape themselves and all those poor souls who jumped to their deaths sometimes holding the hand of another so they could bravely face Eternity. I'll remember 911 not with parades or speeches but in my heart which has been indelibly inscribed with the events I witnessed that day near the Canyon of Heroes. I am glad I attended your funeral at St. Thomas!!

I'll never forget Bob,I worked with him at Delta, one day he checked a bag put on the belt behind us and the guy comes back just as the bag goes through the curtains to the bag room, the guy asks if he can get a book out of his bag Bob says once it goes thru the curtain I don't know where it goes so no you can't get until you claim it at your destination all with a smile and glint in his eye, I could hardly hold the laugher in.
A great person with a great sense of humor.
My God hold you in his grace.

July 15, 2010

What I remember most about Bob was the Irish grin he would wear when he was aggravated, nervous or just happy. Today I picture him on 9/11, standing ready with that same Irish Grin, waiting for permission to, rather then orders to, do the job he loved more then life itself, saving and protecting the people he swore to protect. You died a hero, you made me proud. Rest in Peace Brother.

I think about Bob often. I met him through friends who lived in Franklin Square. We played roller hockey at WHHS after school and we went to many, many Dead shows together. I remember the last two times I saw Bob. One was while he was running down Dogwood Ave. and I was running as well and he told me that he was training to become a firefighter.
The second was at a Ratdog show at William Patterson University in NJ. It was a horrible show, in a bad venue, but Bob, as always was there, I believe with Kevin Walsh (the younger one).
I remember Bob as a completely cool, laid back guy who was fun to party with and I remember him as a great Deadhead and he is very much missed.

To Bob's family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you all as we come up to the 4th anniversary of Bob's untimely demise. I went to Holy Trinity with Bob. I will always remember him with his Grateful Dead denim jacket, his super-easy going style, and his omnipresent smile. While I am saddened by his death, I can take solace in reading about all the different ways Bob touched many people's lives and his own "Long, strange trip". I hope you all can take solace in the words written by Bob's many friends and all the fond memories he provided.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bob growing up in West Hempstead. My wife Barbara and I also had the pleasure of spending many evenings with him at various taverns. It was funny to hear so many people at his memorial talk about how Bob would often just "pop up". He seemed to have a sense for knowing where the party was. It was also amazing to see just how many people knew him. Bob seemed to have connections with everybody from town. My wife and I had not seen Bob for a number of years but I was lucky enough to see him about two months before he died. I was driving along on Hempstead Avenue and saw him riding his bike on the opposite side of the street. Bob was the kind of guy that you would pull your car over for to say hello, because you knew that he would greet you with his trademark grin and would make you leave with a smile on your face. I pulled over and shouted out "hey Linnane" True to form he shot over to me on his bike, (smiling all the way). We had a brief conversation, talking about what we had been up to. He spoke about how much he loved being in the fire department. I left with a smile on my face as expected and was happy to know that he was doing so well. His death was truly tragic and touched many lives. I found comfort in reading many of the entries in this guest book. You can see that Bob still continues to touch peoples lives, even in death, and his circle of friends continues to grow. God Bless Bob, his family, and all of the fire fighters and their families that were affected 9/11.

Bob and I were high school friends. Lot's of good times. When I moved to upstate NY Bob would come up occasionally with a bunch of friends and camnp out. I remember 1 time he rode his bicycle from West Hempstead to Middleburgh. Bob always had a smile and if he didn't one was coming soon. Maybe Bob and I will meet again in heaven one day. My dearest Bob,

Everytime I hear the Grateful Dead, I think of the great times we had and it will always bring a smile to my face. I will never forget the first time I met you. You were so different and unconforming, your own person. I found in you such a peacefulness that you shared with me. You were my first true love and I regret that we never stayed in touch. I always wondered what wonderful things you were doing and now I know. "What a long strange trip it has been" You were and will always be thought of as a kind soul and a true hero. You will always be in my heart and my thoughts. My prayers go out to your family.

When I saw the ads for the memorial bracelets, I felt that I should wear one. I ordered one with no specific name in mind. The name sent to me was Firefighter Bob Linnane, FDNY Ladder 20. I wear this bracelet almost constantly, even at work. Over time, an urge kept eating at me to find out who this man was, and so I found myself here. After reading about him and the kind words that so many had for him, I realize now that the perfect name was sent to me. To his family I wish every good thing. As for Bob, I will see him for the first time sometime in the future, and we will trade war stories and I'm sure he will make yet one more friend. God Bless,

I met you ones in La Guardian airport. You helped me by the professional way you have. I didn´t get flight for same day so I have to stay over a night in NY.

Next day you called after me to ask how am I at Atlanta airport. It was planned to make calls during my holiday but I didn´t get your phone number correct.

But after my holiday I found your address from Internet and I wrote to you a letter. Since then we wrote email quite often. You were planned to come Finland one day and you remind me about that week before WTC. But we did not have time enough.

I will always remember you. Why can not we met ever again, my dear Delta Agent.

Your place is in my heart always.

To Roberts family,

I worked with BOB at the Dl ticket counter when I first started with the company. He was one of my first trainers that took me under his wing. That is why I will never forget him, nor will anyone from Delta. He was a wonderful person that always made me laugh no matter how bad things were. I will always remember Bob for what he did for me and everyone else.

To Robert's family,

You don't know me and I don't know you, but I was given a bracelet by a firefighter friend with Roberts name on it and I wear it almost everyday to keep his spirit alive. He was a very brave person to endure the kind of dedication to his country and family. I will continue to wear his bracelet amoung the missing? Until peace comes to this earth!!!!

G-d bless your family!

You may contact me with the above address. Thank you,

Debbie

I knew Bobby. We went to grade school together in West Hempstead. You always knew when Bobby was around from his sneezes ...the loudest recorded at the time. We maybe spoke once in the last twenty years but the connection will always be there. We lost another classmate,Tommy Hetzel, who was also an NYFD firefighter. While I wasn't directly affected by the tradegy, these two guys will always be in my memories. I pray for their families and loved ones every day.

Dear Bob,

All the good times at the ticket counter and the bumps we took on the slopes are memories that will last with me forever. I hope you look over all of your old collegues from both DL and FDNY and keep a smile for us!

We thank Robert for dedicating his life to helping others by being a firefighter. Such dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart full of love for his fellow man. In his picture Robert has a warm and caring smile which is another reflection of a heart that cares. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Robert. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Robert,

Your tribute was written on my birthday and even though I never met you, I realize what a wonderful man you must have been with such loving friends who thought so kindly of you.

You made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, and I hope your loved ones find comfort knowing you are in the prayers and thoughts of people all over the world.

A friend of mine told me what life is all about. Frankly I have had many doubts about its meaning, of late. He told me life is not about thinking about ME, it is about thinking about SOMEONE ELSE. That is what firefighters do and that is what made you so special and brave.

God Bless you, Robert and may you rest in peace with the other Angels who got their Angel Wings with you on September 11, 2001!

After reading the portrait of greif of Mr. Linnane I felt compelled to sign the guestbook. I did not know him, however he was a devoted Grateful Dead fan. So am I. I then saw that he was from West Hempstead L.I. Coincidently, I lived there from birth to 7 years old. My wifes family is still there. I wonder if I ever knew him as a childhood freind. Sugaree was his favorite GD song, mine too. God bless you and your family Robert Thomas Linnane."A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through".
