I think of you often, Alfred, my friend from 2nd grade all the way through PMHS graduation. Had a great time in intramurals with you. I especially thought of you every time I returned to Afghanistan to fight against those who helped take you away. May God bless your family.

I remember playing the board game Clue as kids. The Malers are some of the best people on this earth. Alfred is with his Mom and Dad now and that gives us peace.

Prayers for all those that perished, their families and loved ones plus those who helped bring others to safety and all the families living or deceased. Prayers and love for comfort and peace.

Just want you to know that I think of you, Laura, Alfred and Jack often. I was there that awful day and my first thought after escaping the building and looking up was of you, my neighbor and friend. Rest in peace.

I think of you often Alfred and pray for your soul. You were such a wonderful husband and father. Although we didn't get together often, when you were in a room, your light shined on everyone. You were a larger than life kind of guy. I light a candle for you every year, and you will never be forgotten. Laura and the boys are always in my thoughts and prayers also.

Our families got together occasionally as our dads were close. I remember as kids playing the board game Clue with the Maler family. although I did not know Alfred as well as the girl cousins, I did share the pain of the tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers And love go out especially to the Maler cousins and to all who made the ultimate sacrifice

Al Maler was my second cousin. We come from a very large family and although I didn't know him well, I was closer with his parents, Beverly and Mike Maler and his siblings. We all felt tremendous pain when he died and he will never be forgotten. We felt so sad for his wife and small sons, especially. May Al rest in peace. He is together with his Dad now.
We recently went to visit the 9-11 memorial and found his name. One of the people who works there gave me a crayon to do a rubbing of his name. It was a very moving experience to go there and see this beautiful memorial to all who died that day. I am so glad that he is being honored on this website. It is so nice to read all the memorials to him and I am sure it brings his family comfort to know so many care..even people who never met him.

Mr. Maler, I don't think we ever had the chance to meet in person, but I knew your wife well, as I was your son Alfred's preschool teacher at Rainbow Montessori School. I helped calm the chaos that morning, by reading stories and singing songs to the children in an attempt to keep things as "normal" as possible to alleviate their fear. Back to school night was especially difficult because all I could see in my classroom was your empty seat. I prayed for you, your wife Laura, and your children. I encouraged Alfred to keep drawing pictures to help him through his grief... I've been lighting a candle and saying a prayer for you every year since then. Although I now live in Arizona, you and your family will always hold a very special place in my heart. God Bless you always...

Hi Al, we were at a mass today at St. Francis in your name. I sat right behind your family. Although I did not know you, my heart felt connected to you and your two sons. I saw the tears in their eyes and felt the pain that they must endure daily without you. God bless you and your family.

Al,
You are a fine mentor and example of compassion and kindness. You made all our primary and secondary school years better through the light cast by your soul. We all became better people through your friendship. I will be speaking of you to South Carolinians on this tenth anniversary, so that others might know of your gift in our lives. You are many things, but most of all to me, you are not a "was". You are an "is" to me, every day, because I use your lessons of peace and triumph throughout my life. Thank you for that timeless gift, which you freely gave to us all. May God be with your family, and your many, many friends.

I live in Indianola Iowa. I did not know Alfred but Des Moines has a "Healing Field" of 3000 flags, each with a yellow ribbon on it with the name of a person who died in 911 in New York. I was taking a picture of my husband ,Don, looking at one of the ribbons and it was "Alfred R. Maler, age 39". I would like his family to see this picture as the field of flags was breathtakingly beautiful. They have music and taps played twice a day. It will be open for viewing for a week.I will attach the photo. Nancy Wood

Alfred was a cousin of mine, though we never met. Our family is very big, but our parents knew each other very well. Even though it's been five years, the wounds are still fresh and very much alive. Our thoughts and prayers are with Al's family and friends as this anniversary approaches.

Al and I attended Cortland State together. Never close friends but always nice acquaintances. After college we continually crossed paths - out in the Hamptons and on the subways in NYC. It was always so nice to see him - always a smile, always so friendly. A tragic loss. I hope is family is well. I thought of him today.

You did not know me. We never met. Even though, I’ve cried many tears countless times for the loss your wife and sons endure. Our wives worked closely together at PW and then PWC, and since we spend most of our waking hours at work, it’s often true that our co-workers know more about the details our lives than friends and family. I often heard stories of Laura and Al, of vacations you took, of moving from the city, of projects around the house. Many conversations between Cathy and Laura found their way into my home at the days end. We separately shared the joy of welcoming our first sons into the world just weeks apart; the sadness of miscarriage and the joy of our second sons being born - again, just weeks apart.

I learned about the kind of person you were while attending your memorial service and realized you’ve touched many lives and if given the chance would have continued to make this world a better place to live.

You and your family will always be in my thoughts, and I am reminded of their pain each time I hear these words sung:

And So Begins The Task,

I have dreaded the coming of for so long.

I wait for the sun,

To remind my body it needs resting.

And I must learn to live without you now,

I must learn to give only part, somehow.

Al affected so many lives at his college (Cortland).

He not only was an energetic, fun, compassionate friend, but he had a no-lose attitude towards sports, and life in general. He was NEVER a quitter and I will always remember that about him, whether it was racquetball, softball, football or pool.

I am sure that these qualities have been passed down to his children and they will someday know this about their father.

I knew Al and his family from working on the Ferries on Long Island. He was so positive, upbeat, and energetic. It never felt like work when Al was around. He made it feel like you were just spending the day hanging out on the water. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

We lived just down the block from Alfred and his family on Jayne Avenue in Patchogue. His sister was the first redhead I had ever seen. Being a kid in suburbia was great. There were so many kids on the block and there was always something to do. Summers were especially wonderful: baseball games, dirt clod fights in the woods, swimming at the Pape's and summer carnivals in the Maler's back yard.

We take so much for granted in this life. I have stopped doing that and appreciate my life and family in a much richer way. You gave us much in life, Al, and you leave us a gift in your death. To your parents and brothers and sisters, I wish you strength. And to your wife and children, although I knew Al so long ago, I wish you all the grace you need to go through these difficult times.

My deepest sympathy to Al's family and friends. The last time I saw Al was many years ago but he is a man easily remembered as he was always smiling and spreading his kindness around. Al was like a big brother to many. God bless Al, his wife and children. Al is looking over you and around you always.

Al was the most good-natured guy I knew in college. Always smiling and having fun. We played on the men's volleyball team at Cortland. He was, by far, the coolest guy on the team. I now think of him often. I hope his wife and children are well.

My pleasure was to know Alfred as he grew up in Patchogue, New York. I didn't have the fortune of knowing him as a father and husband, but I have heard the same attributes he had early on carried forward into his adult life: a caring and compassion for others without a selfish thought; and a calmness when everyone around him was flustered, an easy manner of dealing with everything and everyone around him.

Alfred was part of a great family, and leaves behind many friends. I had the pleaure of watching him grow up in a time where home was always a safe place, and doors were wide open for friends and neighbors. To his parents Mike and Bev, I hope you feel the strength and love of your family and friends. To his sisters and brothers, I say that words cannot express my feelings since that day in September, my thoughts are with you, and although I'm a distance away and years have passed since my younger days in Patchogue, please let my feelings of compassion bring you strength. Al's memory lives on and the impressions he leaves behind will stand the test of time.

To all those that love...they are never forgotten, for all those that grieve, it is never the same, I pray for the memories of what was, to carry on through all that had the blessing of having been touched by Al. His legacy are his children, and his wife. His life will be forever remembered by all those he touched. I will always remember him and my prayers will always remain with his children and wife. We must cherish the time we were fortunate enough to have him and thank God he left behind the kind of love that will never be let go or forgotten. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers for his entire family. God Bless you all

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
