Katie Frances Maler (Smith), age 65, of Devol, Oklahoma, passed away on January 6, 2025, at Medical City Plano, Texas. She was born on November 2, 1959, in California.
Katie was the beloved wife of Steve Maler, USAF, for 38 years. Together they raised a loving family, including their children: Danielle (Michael) Vecchia of Burkburnett, TX, Steven Maler, who resides in Oklahoma City, OK, Amanda (Tanner) Winters of Muenster, TX, and John (Laura) Maler of Austin, TX. She was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren: Abigail, Lyndon, Nolan, Bowen, Finley, Kailey, Kamryn, Tripp, and the incoming Frankie.
She is also survived by her brothers: Jerry (Carmen) Molitor of Colorado Springs, CO, Michael (Terry) Molitor of Bellingham, WA, Eric Molitor of Moore, OK, and Steve Minnick of Mexico, MO; as well as her sister, Kyla (Kyle) Robbins of La Roy, IL. Katie was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald Smith of Florida and Carol (Michael) Yeargain of Oklahoma City, OK; along with her siblings, John Molitor of Moore, OK, and Danae Dodson of Oklahoma City, OK.
A woman of faith, Katie dedicated many years to leading Bible studies for peers and youth in each community where she lived while her military family moved across the country. Eventually, they settled in Devol, Oklahoma, where she continued to inspire many through her devotion.
Katie was a talented artist, inheriting her creativity from her mother. Her beautiful oil paintings adorned her home and those of many friends and family. Throughout her life, she embraced various roles, including being a school teacher and a hairdresser, but her true passion was nurturing her family in faith.
In addition to painting, Katie had a love for the domesticated life, which included raising chickens and gardening. She found joy in cultivating her garden and creating a nurturing environment for her family. Katie also cherished her annual mother-daughter trips, a tradition started by her mother, which allowed her to create lasting memories with her daughters.
Katie took great delight in watching her grandchildren sing in recitals and play sports, especially baseball and football. She was immensely proud of her children for their athletic achievements, their service to our country, and their successes in life. A true warrior, Katie was a cancer survivor, consistently beating the odds that life threw at her, demonstrating remarkable strength and resilience throughout her journey. She also studied scripture daily with her husband and enjoyed playing cards with her ladies in her later years, which brought her much joy and companionship.
The family will receive friends between 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home in Burkburnett. A celebration of Katie’s life will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Devol, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Randlett, Oklahoma.
