Titus Davidson Obituary

Saying It With Food

Titus Davidson's love for his only daughter could be measured by the empty Tupperware in her cupboard. Whenever they met, he gave her a container filled with his latest creation, and his daughter, Tanya Dale, 25, often took a while to return the empties. Mr. Davidson never earned enough to buy her expensive gifts, so cooking was his way of doting. "He acted like he was the only one that ever had a child," said his sister Shirley White.

Mr. Davidson, 55, was the second of 16 children, growing up on a farm in rural Jamaica. Cooking was a chore, but when he moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn, in 1972, it helped him land a job in the kitchen of a Jamaican restaurant.

When Mr. Davidson visited his daughter at her mother's apartment in the 1980's, he took dolls and lollipops, but also homemade jerk chicken and curried goat.

He indulged her when she became a vegetarian, taking meatless dishes to their lunches together. They often ate in the plaza next to 2 World Trade Center, where Mr. Davidson had worked since 1991 as a security guard for Morgan Stanley.

Mr. Davidson encouraged his daughter to get the education he never had. She went to Columbia and then to Hunter College, where she earned a master's degree in social work. When she got scholarships, his only reservation was that "he felt bad because he wanted to help me out himself," she said.

I worked closely with Mr. Davidson as security guards for Morgan Stanley. I had left the job 3 years prior to 9/11. I was on my way to my new job when the incident happened. I called the the console (bcos I still had the number) and Mr. Davidson picked up. So we chatted a bit and he told me that everything was fine and he was safe and for me not to worry. The was the last time I spoke to him... May his gentle soul rest in peace

A Brother loss, not knowing You personally, yet sharing a name so close, I often feel we are one, and yet this much is True! On that date of departure it could have been I; for every 9/11, whenever I hear your name, I know my time will come to, to join that chorus amongst the stars! May the Creator Bless You and Yours & all created on earth.

Tanya, I am deeply sorry for the loss of your father. May warm memories of times shared with him lighten the sorrow in your heart. May Titus' enjoyment for cooking to share his love for you, his life and love continue living in all who love him and in all who have been touched by his life.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our heart's cry....

We cannot take away your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-

because we

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

the American people

face this difficult time together.

Tanya,

Just wanted you to know that I made a quilt block in your father's memory for the United In Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt. I'd love to show you a photograph of it or better still, meet you at one of our quilt shows. Take care of yourself.

Tanya,

I don't know you but I knew your father, Titus. Let me tell you, he was so proud of you. Last summer, when you were graduating, we spoke and his joy and pride shone in his eyes. He truly loved you and it came across in our conversations.

We often spoke about Jamaica and his fond memories of growing up. And most definitely the food. He often mused how he missed it. He was a truly decent and respectful human being.

Every time I think about his loss, I can't help but get emotional. A wonderful human being was taken away from us much too soon.

I saw him that morning and waved good morning. I never saw him again that chaotic morning. I still can't believe he died.

Be proud, Tanya, because your father was very proud of you and your accomplishments. Carry on my brave and strong sister. And if you ever need a shoulder to lean on, let me know.

To Tonya:

I am sorry for your loss. I do not know you or your father but his story touched me deeply.

Always remember the beautiful things that your father taught you and he will never truly be gone.
