William Stephens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2025.
William "Bill" Lewis Stephens passed into the presence of Jesus on June 27, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with Alzheimer's. From his diagnosis in November 2024 until the end, Bill embodied courage, hope, and unwavering focus-self-publishing two books amidst the diagnosis, "Through Valleys to Victory" and "Through the Eyes of Jesus", and living every day to glorify God.

If you spent more than a few moments with Bill, he would almost always ask one of two questions: "Where do you go to church?" or "Do you have a relationship with the Lord?" Whenever he saw an opportunity to love others, he stepped in wholeheartedly. He fed the homeless, ministered in prisons, traveled to places such as Iraq and Malaysia to support local believers in Christ, taught Sunday School, hosted home Bible studies, and served Tampa's Muslim and maritime communities. In every effort, he gave 100% through his preparation, consistency, service on boards of directors, planning of events, and giving financially-living out his faith with a deep love for people.

Bill was an extraordinary father, "Grandy," husband, teacher, and friend. As a dad, he intentionally invested time in building a strong bond with his only child, his daughter Cindy. He taught her about God, how to throw a football, the value of hard work, and-most importantly-that her ideas, thoughts and opinions mattered. They shared countless special moments: attending many Florida State University football games, screaming on roller coasters, and nightly trips to the Farm Store for ice cream. His love and guidance shaped Cindy's life in profound ways.

In 2012, Bill became "Grandy" with the birth of his grandson, Hector William. He quickly followed suit with Hector as he did with Cindy, by investing time and energy into building a special relationship. Even as Alzheimer's progressed, he made sure to watch Hector pitch in Little League Baseball, cheer him on in flag football, and, walker in tow, play catch together in the yard-moments he treasured and spoke of until the end.

As a husband, Bill cared for his first wife, Brenda Kinsey Stephens, with the same devotion during her battle with Alzheimer's as he had throughout their 47-year marriage-offering faithfulness, commitment, and love. After Brenda's passing, he found new joy with Carolyn Kennedy Liss. Together, they spent seven rich years traveling the world, serving God, and building a new chapter of life in North Palm Beach, Florida.

Bill devoted thirty-five years to teaching accounting at the University of South Florida, where he was a beloved professor and mentor to thousands of students. He served as faculty advisor for Beta Alpha Psi, leading USF's chapter to become the top chapter in the world-a distinction it still holds. He also co-authored several accounting textbooks, leaving a lasting mark on the profession.

In retirement, Bill embraced adventure: a solo cross-country trip; a cattle drive; skydiving; painting; introducing his love for FSU football to Carolyn; self-publishing three books; and staying active playing tennis, racquetball, and pickleball. He never lost his humor, always ready with a pun to share with family, friends, and strangers alike.

Bill's life leaves a legacy of faith, love and service. On the day he passed, his son-in-law Hector found a well-worn notecard in Bill's handwriting that he used to memorize scripture, summing up his life's focus perfectly:

Philippians 1:21 - "For what is life? To me, it is Christ. Death then, will bring more."

Bill is survived by his daughter, Cindy Stephens Cruz, wife, Carolyn Kennedy Liss, son-in-law Hector Luis Cruz, and grandson, Hector William Cruz.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at Bridgeway Church, 30660 Wells Rd, Wesley Chapel, FL 33545, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. In honor of Bill's love for color and celebration, the family requests that guests wear bright colors.

In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the Alzheimer's Association.

- Through the Eyes of Jesus: Coming to Appreciate Jesus More Fully

- Through Valleys to Victory: Defeating Depression, Overcoming Spiritual Oppression, and Finding God's Peace in Troubling Times

Dr Stephens was both an inspiration and driving force behind both mine and my wife Karen´s career choice to become accountants. He was her grad student instructor at FSU and my first accounting professor at USF.
Karen couldn´t believe I would call him Bill instead of Dr Stephens. But he had become not only a mentor but a very close friend. I believe I was the president of Beta Alpha Psi the first year we won the number one ranking.

I enjoyed our meetings at the FSU tailgates, especially when I could wear my Orange and Blue supporting UF.

I regret not being in contact with Bill in the last several years, but he will always be in our hearts and a big part of our favorite memories.

Cindy, so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was a dear friend from our Miami High School days where he kept me laughing in homeroom.
We both went to FSU and where he met his first love, Brenda.
He was always so proud of you and your following in his footsteps.
I will miss his friendship of so many years.

Sadden to learn of Bill's passing. He was a good friend of mine at FSU. I served as an officer with him (he was President, I was secretary) in FSU's Beta Alpha Psi 1967-68. After graduation, I would occassionally see him at FSU althletic functions in Tampa. How he loved his FSU sports teams! My deepest sympathies and condolencenses to you and your family.

Our family owes so much to Bill Stephens. He was a faithful friend, church member, supporter of Frontlines International, but dearest to our heart is that he invited a struggling student of his to come to our church at First Baptist of Lutz, where she met her future husband, our son. We will be forever grateful.
Bill, you fought the good fight, you finished the race, you will be missed, but we will see you again!

I was just a student and friend of Professor Stephens and wanted to let his family and friends know that he influenced and touched my life immensely. He was the reason I chose to pursue accounting- he held me accountable and raised the bar high but all the while, he had an unwavering belief that I could succeed if I put the work and time in. I am so grateful to have known him in some small way and will never forget how adept he was at teaching and bringing out the best in his students, including me.

Pro. Stephens made an impact on those around him. He was a bright light in a challenging course and wanted to see success for his students. His impact on me personally has not been forgotten. I smile even more knowing now why we were able to connect - an unknowingly shared faith! I´m so thankful for the hope we have knowing Christ and that this is not the end! Sending condolences and prayers to family and friends.

Cindy, I'm sorry for your loss. Dr Stephens (as I knew and respected) had a life changing impact on my life. Not only was he an amazing professor, my Beta Alpha Psi leader, my mentor and cheerleader, it was because of him and Dr. Keith that my relationship with Jesus was restored at the dinners and Bible studies they offered us. I hope we all leave a legacy as he has. I'm sure he heard "well done good and faithful servant" when he saw our Savor, Jesus. Thank you Dr. Stephens! Thank you Cindy for sharing your dad with us!

Cindy, I am so sorry for your loss. My dad passed away exactly a week before yours. Your dad was such a special person and made such a difference during my time at USF. From taking his principles of accounting class to later being a TA for his class and being in Beta Alpha Psi, he always a mentor to me. He will always be remembered.

Dear Cindy,
You were truly blessed with amazing parents. Your dad inspired me with how he cared for your mom. He and your mother were exceptional in many ways, but you are their greatest accomplishment! I hope you find peace and comfort in all your memories with them, but also in how much joy and pride you gave your father every day!
