Shirley Smith Obituary


Shirley Ann Cotton Smith, age 87, of Erie, died Monday, December 21, 2015, at her residence.

She was born in Meadville, Pa., on February 5, 1928, the daughter of the late John D. and Jessie King Cotton.

Shirley graduated from Conneaut Lake High School.

Prior to her retirement she had worked for Talon in Meadville, and the Erie School District.

She was a member and Deaconess of the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Merle Smith in 2002, two brothers, Fred Cotton and James Cotton, and a sister, Margaret "Peg" Hudy.

Survivors include her son, Richard F. Smith and his wife Lora, granddaughter, Brandy, grandsons, Steven (Jamie) and Richie Smith, and great-grandchildren, Steven, Jr., GraceAnn, Levi, and Madison, all of Erie.

At the request of Shirley, there will be no calling hours, and burial will be private at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Burton Funeral Home, 602 West 10th Street.

Memorials may be made to the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church, 1903 West 8th St., PMB #192, Erie, PA 16505.
