A.G. Terry Shaffer Age 66, of Indianapolis, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2005.Kiwanis International Executive Director Emeritus A.G. Terry Shaffer was a member of the International Office staff for nearly 35 years, from 1969 to 2004.He was a native of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, a graduate of Sunbury High School and of Susquehanna University. Terry was former treasurer of the Sunbury High School Key Club. He joined Kiwanis in 1959 and maintained perfect attendance throughout his life.Before joining the Kiwanis staff, he taught English and American History at Danville, Pennsylvania, High School. Terry served as president of three Kiwanis clubs: Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania; Southeast Area, Chicago; and Northwest Indianapolis. He served as secretary of those three clubs and the Kiwanis Club of Tri-Village, Rich Township, Illinois. He also served as lieutenant governor of Division 12, Pennsylvania District, for two years, and as district chairman of three committees of the Pennsylvania District. One of those committees was Key Club (1962 - 65), and 44 new Key Clubs were built during that three year period. Terry also served as a member of the International Committee on Key Clubs during Kiwanis International's golden anniversary year of 1965. Terry held a wide variety of responsibilities on the Kiwanis International staff, including manager of club services, director of program development, Circle K International administrator, Assistant International Secretary for Program Services, and Assistant to the International Secretary. He was appointed International Secretary effective October 1, 1994, having served as Acting International Secretary for seven months prior to that date. The title of International Secretary was changed to Executive Director in 1998. As Executive Director, he was a non-voting member of the International Board and supervised the Kiwanis International Staff at the Indianapolis headquarters and elsewhere around the world. He was also the editor of Kiwanis Magazine. Terry served as Executive Director until his successor was named on January 8, 2004. He then served as the organization's ArchivistHistorian. Upon his retirement, the International Board of Trustees named him Executive Director Emeritus. Terry also served as Laws and Regulations Chairman for the Indiana District of Kiwanis, was a member of the Kiwanis Indiana Foundation Executive Committee, and served as secretary-treasurer of the Indiana District past lieutenant governor's association for eight years. He was elected lieutenant governor to the Indy Metro Division of Indiana Kiwanis from 2004-05. Terry was a life member of Kiwanis, member of the Kiwanis International Foundation's Heritage Society, Foundation Tablet of Honor recipient, and a diamond-level 13 member of the George F. Hixson Fellowship. He was a McCulloch Gold Award recipient and was named Kiwanian of the Year on three occasions by the clubs of which he had been a member. Terry was a member of the advisory Board of the Salvation Army from 1996 to 2005. He is survived by his wife, Nancy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 24, 2005 in the Salvation Army Community Center, 4400 N. High School Rd. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 in Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center, Washington Park North. Additional viewing is from 10 a.m. until time of service at the Community Center on Thursday. Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to: Kiwanis International Foundation; Kiwanis Indiana Foundation, Inc.; Salvation Army; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; Children Miracle Network; Indianapolis Humane Society; and the Indianapolis Zoo.
