MARIA (MARY) VARGAS entered peacefully into rest August 8, 2002 surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born August 20, 1922 a native of Oakland, California. All who knew and met her loved her. She was an exceptional mother and known affectionately by the name ?Mama?. Proceeded in death by two sons Dennis and James Vargas. Survived by her soul mate and devoted husband of 58 years Candido (Alex) Vargas. Eldest daughter Mary Berkowitz, Kandace Frediani, Adina and Steven Vargas. Grandchildren Scott, Shane, Kevin, Tara, Pricilla, Monica, Angela and Keith. Great grand children, Andrea, Isaac, Sierra and Juliana. Devoted son?s in-law Rich Berkowitz, James Frediani, Eddie Verdin. Daughter?s in-law Michele Gonzalez-Vargas, Monica Verdin and Yolanda Lopez. The above named in-law children of Maria, loved and respected her deeply. Her sister Eleanor and Albino Perez, Lydia Mondragon and Rita Stuart also survive her, along with a host of nieces and nephews and a close family friend Kris. Mary loved to dance and often could be found at the Ali Baba, Sands, and the Sweets Bald rooms. A retired teamster Mary worked for over thirty years at Fairmont Foods in San Lorenzo. Mary had many hobbies and loved to entertain. An accomplished hostess, Who would go all out, for whatever holiday or occasion of celebration. Whether it be a party or even in death, Mary could draw a crowd, as the staff at Kaiser hospital found out. No matter what, you couldn?t keep people away from "Mama". She will be sorely missed. We love you ?Mama?. Friends are invited to call at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00Pm and attend funeral Services at Chapel of the Chimes on Thursday, August 15th at 1:00pm. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
