Philip Clinton Obituary

Published by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services - New Haven on Aug. 30, 2012.
After a life well lived, Philip Nathan Clinton, Sr. of Bethany, CT transitioned peacefully from this life on August 31, 2012 at the Hilltop Health Center in Ansonia, CT. He was 87. Philip, known affectionately as Phil - was born on October 16, 1924 in West Springfield, MA to the late Clarence and Rosalie Clinton, the fourth of 9 children. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1943. After graduation, he entered the military and served his country from 1943 to 1946 in the US Navy during WW II. After his tour of duty was complete, he moved to New Haven to study photography. In 1957 he married Barbara Nelson of New Haven, and they made their home there until moving to Bethany to raise their family of three sons. While in the Navy, Phil was trained in drafting and tool-making, which paved the way for one of his lifelong careers as a draftsman-engineer. He worked as an independent consultant for a number of companies in the northeast from New York City to Burlington, VT - including Sikorsky, Pratt & Whitney, Electric Boat, and United Technologies. A lifelong lover of the arts, Phil also enjoyed a career as a freelance photographer. He founded his own photography company, which provided the photo documentation of many weddings, special events and crime scenes in greater New Haven. His work also adorned the halls of Yale University. In addition, Phil loved music - especially classical, choral and jazz - and was blessed with a beautiful baritone singing voice. Phil could commonly be found singing along with and conducting songs on the radio! While in the Navy he sang in the Glee Club, and more recently, he enjoyed singing with the Heritage Chorale of New Haven. Phil was a faithful member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in New Haven for more than 50 years. Throughout the years, he served in several capacities at St. Luke's, including teaching Sunday School, and lending his rich baritone voice to the choirs. Phil was predeceased by his wife Barbara Nelson Clinton, brothers Clarence, Harold, Robert, and his sister Orreeda Jones. He is survived by brothers Wilbur (Dean) of Springfield, MA and William of TX, and sisters Rosalie Valentine of Queens, New York and Winifred Wright of Springfield. He also leaves to cherish his memory three sons - Philip Jr. (Annie) of Mattapan, MA, Eric (Lisa) of Stockbridge, GA, and Marc (Paulette) of Bethany, CT; nine grandchildren, several great grand-children, nieces and nephews and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Marc...thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you now adjust to a world without your dad. I met you a few times in the elevator at Hilltop Health Care...my dad, too, was a patient there until his passing last October 16th (your dad's b.d.)...I know how hard it was to watch your dad decline, but know that with each passing day it gets a bit easier knowing that he is at peace now. He ate lunch at table with my dad several times while I was visiting and I enjoyed talking with him...I told him that I grew up in Bethany and he remembered that he lived in Bethany...he was a very nice man and I've thought of him often in the past 11 months.
