Patricia Hoy Conrad of Downingtown, PA, passed away on December 23, 2013 after a year long battle with sarcoma. Patricia was known throughout the Philadelphia, Southeastern Chester County, PA and Wilmington, DE area and far beyond as one of the finest vocalists and voice teachers of her generation, but she would rather be remembered as the devoted wife of Thomas Conrad, Jr. , adoring mother of daughter Lauren Conrad Giza, and loving family member, friend, and musical colleague. A graduate of Temple and West Chester Universities with Masters Degrees in Vocal Performance and Opera, Patricia made her debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra as the winner of the Young Artists Competition in (1968). Until recently she enjoyed a wide and varied concert career appearing nationally in recital and with various orchestras and choruses including the Delaware Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Delaware Chamber Society, Sinfonia Da Camera, Main Line Philamusica, Chorale Delaware, the Northern Delaware Oratorio Society, the North Penn Symphony, the Helena Symphony and the Duke Ellington Orchestra (on tour) in the Sacred Concert Series, among others. Patricia was an active soloist and chorister at Christ Church Christiana Hundred where she and her husband Tom were members of the professional choir since (1979). In addition to her performing schedule, Patricia maintained a private voice studio, and served as President of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Association of Teacher of Singing and member of the Board of Directors of Chorale Delaware. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and by all who were graced by the beauty she gave the world through her music and as the kind, loving, giving, and compassionate person that she was. In addition to her husband Tom, daughter Lauren Conrad Giza (Steven), Patricia is survived by her mother-in-law Elaine Conrad, sister-in-law and her husband Sue and Nick Manari, and a large extended family. Pat was my first vocal teacher from 1994-1996, when I was in 10th-12th grade. At that time, she awarded me a scholarship to study with her; however, given my maturity at that age, I couldn't fully appreciate the magnitude of her gift. Pat was a person who so patient and warm; she was the only adult in my life at that time who supported my efforts. She was a compassionate and wonderful human being. I am saddened to hear of her passing.

I can not believe that 6 years have passed since Pat was with us. She will always remain one of the most important, influential, and loved people of my life. Lauren, I saw the note you left about the concert on November to fund your mother's scholarship. I would definitely want to be there. I think of all of you often. I miss her so much.

This email popped up today to remind me of moms passing. I am not sure how I could ever forget losing my very best friend. I cannot believe it has been 6 years. If anyone else happens to read this post, we will have another benefit concert for her scholarship program next November. I hope you can join us. Love to everyone who loved my mom.

I have a very old and prized memory of performing the Three Songs of Innocence with Pat while at West Chester. I played the clarinet. God bless the family.

So sad to read of Pat's long illness and passing. First met Pat through Bill Lamb's Pottstown Band group but more recently during her visits to Dr. Mark's office. Always knew she was a very special lady but after reading all the many beautiful tributes to her it's been confirmed! My sympathy and prayers to you. You have so many wonderful memories--cherish them always. Love,
Barbara Piacine

Pat Conrad was a mentor of mass proportion to my three daughters. She cultivated their singing talents, loved them unconditionally, and protected them as fiercely as a mother lion would! In her eyes, there was never a school as good as theirs, a solo they shouldn't be awarded, or a part they didn't deserve. Jessica met her first, and even now she remembers how she challenged her to sing music that differed from her pop chart favorites. Alyssa quite literally owes her the career she recently started as a choir/ musical director for a High School! And our youngest, Kendyll, will never adequately be able to thank Mrs. Conrad for all that she did for her budding musical career, both at Pat's alma mater, Temple, and professionally. I know that she will always search every audience for her angel, Mrs. Conrad.
We will miss her very much, and send our love to Tom and Lauren.

To say that I am sad and shocked at this news is an understatement. To Tom and Lauren: my deepest sympathies are with you at this very difficult time. It's taken several days for me to be able to write something. I did not know that Pat was sick. What I do know is that she changed my life. From 1990 until 1993; I spent every Tuesday afternoon in the living room of the Conrad's home doing what I loved most: singing. I never called Pat "Mrs Conrad;" we had a closeness that started from the beginning. Those Tuesday afternoons rescued me from a very difficult time in my life. I felt at home. She called me "darlin'" (which I can still hear today.) Pat helped me win many vocal contests, get into a good school, and be recognized for the talent that I had. More importantly; she taught me how to be a giving and loving person by example. She taught me that a piece of music is not just something on a paper. She taught me that it was a paper full of emotion and beauty and that I had to find it in myself to bring those emotions to life. I continued to take lessons with Pat through the time I was at the music school that I picked (Pat was right; I should have went else where). Eventually we became colleagues singing together in a few professional groups (all of which she helped me to get into). Eventually; I left music (a decision I regret) and we lost touch for many years. After a life threatening illness; I returned to the area feeling worthless, devastated, and lost. God brought me back to Pat for lessons in 2009. She helped me find my voice again but most importantly helped me find myself through all the trauma I was going through. She showed me love and support as she always had. Without her in my life; I would likely not be here today. She saved me from pain that I couldn't handle. She taught me about life. Though we haven't seen each other in several years; Pat has been and will always be close to my heart. I loved her like a second mom. Heaven wanted that voice of hers up there. May she rest and peace and bring music to God with the gift he gave her. She was an angel on Earth and now has her wings. My sincere sympathies to all who loved her.

With much love,

Christopher Carozzo
