Glen Scott "Scotty" Keeney

Glen Scott Keeney, "Scotty", (age 73), of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 in Port Charlotte, Florida surrounded by family and friends. Scott was born at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in Jackson County to Glen S. Keeney and Helen (Swope) Keeney on December 11, 1940. He grew up and went to school in Rich Hill, Missouri. He enlisted in the United States Navy soon after high school and did boot camp in San Diego, California. He served honorably and retired as an Aviation Electronics Chief Petty Officer. While serving, Scott was recognized for his 3 campaigns in Vietnam Veteran and was awarded several prestigious medals and ribbons for honorable military service. After retiring from the US Navy he later worked as a computer programmer for Iowa Electric Light & Power and EDS for over 20 years. While actively employed Scott also attended Kirkwood Community College and easily obtained an "Applied Sciences Degree" in May of 1981 graduating at the top of his class. He later was heavily involved in the Cedar Rapids Power Squadron from 1995-2003 where he served as a District 30 Executive Officer, and later as the Commanding Officer. He also obtained educational proficiencies in advanced naval piloting as well as national recognition as the "Charlie Noble Newsletter" Editor. He was an avid sailor (an "old salt") and chartered sailboats to the Florida Keys with close friends Barb and Paul Cartwright. He was a real Christian who was active in several homeless ministries including the homeless veterans. He gave endless hours of his time cooking, providing clothes, and programs like the shower ministries at New Day Christian Church. He supported numerous international missionaries. Scott always voluntarily provided generous support without any need or want of fanfare or recognition. He loved his children, adored his grand kids and was always involved in giving his time to developing youth programs like being a Boy Scout Master or teaching at Sailing Clubs. Scott was instrumental in impacting lives and creating a positive influence wherever he went. Glen Scott Keeney is survived by his children: Tammy McIntire Stefanovic, Terri Cosby, Mark DeRyke, Jeff Keeney and Brian Keeney along with his grandchildren, Matthew Scott Stefanovic, Hannah Marie Stefanovic, Brittany DeRyke, Olivia Annette Stefanovic, Nicholas R. Stefanovic and Alex Keeney. Memorial Services will be held at New Day Christian Church on Monday, January 6th at 11:00 a.m. with the Pastor Rusty Russell officiating. The church is located at 20212 Peachland Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33954. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up at New Day Christian Church. Envelopes can be submitted at the service. Online contributions can also be made online or mailed to New Day Christian Church (Attn: Glen Scott Keeney Memorial Fund) 20212 Peachland Blvd. Port Charlotte, FL 33954. Proceeds from the memorial fund will be distributed to "The Shower Ministry" at New Day Christian Church, the Homeless Ministries in Port Charlotte (like the Homeless Vets), and the "Meals on Wheels" in Charlotte County.
