Doniphan "Don" Penn Moore, Jr., a devoted family man, farmer, car dealer, with a heart for others, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. His mission in life was serving the needs of the less fortunate, concerned more about others than himself. Born in Owensboro, a son of the late Doniphan Penn Moore, Sr. and Opal Mae "Pat" Midkiff Moore, he attended the Kentucky Military Institute in 1952 and graduated from Owensboro High School in 1954. As an All State football player, Mr. Moore attended the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship, was a member of Delta Tau Delta, and graduated in 1958 from the College of Agriculture. Mr. Moore was a member of the 100th Division, U.S. Army Reserve, spending a year on active duty at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas. Mr. Moore began his career in the family owned Short Brothers Motor Company in 1959, working full-time in 1962. At the death of his father in 1969, he became the full time dealer and changed the name of the dealership to Don Moore Chevrolet. In 1983, he retired from the dealership and focused his time on his true love, farming. Mr. Moore cherished his farming friendships and was known in the farming community for his cattle's exceptional bloodlines. He produced two National Grand Champion bulls and developed an expertise in forage, particularly fescue, during his farming career. A life-long member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, he credited the opportunity to teach Sunday School to the fact he was the only one willing to climb three flights of stairs. Mr. Moore described his winters at Vero Beach, Florida with family and Kentucky friends as the "icing on the cake." He spent 19 years in Florida always anxious to return to Kentucky when the grass began growing. A health and fitness activist, Mr. Moore ran the first Owensboro 10 Miler and up until his final days could be seen riding his bike on the roads of Florida and Kentucky. Never to miss a day, if the weather didn't cooperate, the Air-Dyne was his equipment of choice. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Whitledge Moore; his children Cynthia Moore Autry and her husband Joey, of Louisville, Don Penn Moore, III and his wife Marla, David Moore and his wife Kelly and John Marshall Moore and his wife Julie, all of Owensboro; his grandchildren Don Penn Moore, IV, Ashley Moore Lowenfield and her husband Ronnie, Carol Anne Autry Jarboe and her husband Christian, Mary Margaret Autry, Kaitlyn Moore, Joseph Autry, III, Kendall Moore, Annabel Moore, Lily Carol Moore, Emma Louise Moore, Henry Marshall Moore, Betsy Ann Moore, and Jack Clayton Moore; his great grandchildren Paxton Lowenfield, Elias Lowenfield, Clay Lowenfield, and Knox Lowenfield; his sister Nell Moore Elliot; his sister-in-law Nancy Malone and her husband Phil all of Owensboro, and his brother-in-law Bill Whitledge of Madisonville, KY. The funeral service for Mr. Moore, officiated by the Rev. Darren Brandon, will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from1:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday and from 10:00 until 12:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Memorial Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church or The Goodfellows Club.

Carol--as you know, Don, along with Quizzie(Bobby Quisenberry) and I were inseparable in High School. Don spent countless nights at our house---our pillow fights were legendary---my mom didn't care--she loved Don as we all did. What is a "best" friend? Whatever it is/was---Don was it. I loved him like a brother.

Dear Carol and Family - I only knew Don and Carol for a few short years at Vero Beach. I"m honored to think that I was one of the "Kentucky friends" he made reference to in his comments about Vero Beach. I'm 82 years of age and have had the pleasure of many friends over those years. I can't think of anyone who was easier to meet or more pleasant to be with than Don and Carol. Don is the man you would think of when you try to define "gentleman" and a "genuine person" - the very best to all of you. Ray Buckberry - Bowling Green, KY

Dear Moore Family:

My husband, Ewing Rascoe and I both went to Sorgho Elementary School with members of the Moore Family. I was Jean Rafferty and in the same class as Don's brother, John Moore. My sister, Jo Ann Rafferty was in the same class as Don, Jr. and Ewing was a grade above. We have many Happy Memories of those days.

The first Cadillac that Don Penn Moore sold in Owensboro was to Ewing Rascoe and that is when Don Penn was first married and living on York Drive, the street where we have lived for many years.
May the Lord be with you during these difficult times. Ewing passed March 1, 2015 and I know some of the grief you will experience and pray that the Lord will be with you. Love, Elizabeth Jean Rafferty Rascoe
