I was so sad to hear that John passed away. John and Kathy were our next door neighbors in Sandusky. They were the best neighbors you could ever hope to have and we really missed them when they moved to Cincinnati. John was also our ER doctor when my husband and I were injured in a motorcycle accident. He took such great care of us at the hospital and even continued to check on us once were home. John was a tremendously compassionate and dedicated doctor. He embodied all of the qualities that you want your doctor to have. My heart goes out to Kathy and all of his family who loved him so. May God cradle you in his arms and comfort you as you grieve.

Kathy and family, Not sure what to say or even where to begin but it seems as though I echo in what everyone thought of John. I believe everyone is either a blessing or a lesson, however as I have said very few people are both. Getting to know both you and John through working in the Providence and Firelands ERs in Sandusky, I can say both you and he are in the elite group of people who are both. You both are two of the most caring, passionate, respectful people ever. He helped everyone, answering squad phone, ER main phone, made beds, walked patients, in addition to "doing his job". I can still picture as though it is happening right now, his signature foot on a chair, or ER cart, patient chart propped on knee giving everyone the same attention, caring, and respect no matter who they were, or where they came from. I can still remember year after year, the Christmas gifts you both gave to everyone in the ER, from Registration to the nurses and everyone in between. You did all the wrapping and he hand wrote each tag. Truly very thoughtful. You both lived the golden rule. In thought and prayer, thinking of you all.

I remember working with John in the ER at Mercy Hospital. I was an RT but to him it was Young Lady. He was not only a great Dr. he was also a great teacher of all sorts. And he would learn from us also and was not afraid to ask questions. He was an awesome person to work with and I will never forget all the times I did work with him.

Kathy and family...how we love you all...Remember the good memories! One of our favorite was sitting around your kitchen table telling life stories...and drinking lot of coffee. John's life was full but now is complete! Kathy thanks for being such a great wife to John. It was because of you and your support that he became the great Dr. all knew him to be. Peace and Prayers Ken and Jeanette

Dear Kathy and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. From those days in the mid 70's hanging out at the Delhi Fire House with John and Fritz on duty, John turned a casual interest in emergency medicine into a lifelong passion and a 40 year career as a Paramedic. We went through the first Paramedic class for Delhi Fire Department together at UC, and sat up late many nights at the firehouse studying together. I am so glad we were able to touch base again last summer and spend some time together remembering the old days. I will always cherish those memories. May John rest in peace.

Thanks for everything over the years Doc. What you taught me and the amount you taught me will never be forgotten. I will remember our last conversations over the past few months and use those when needing to look at the big picture. Your impact was as large as your personality and you will be forever remembered. Go rest high friend. Keep an eye on us.

I am proud to have gotten to known Dr.Shill in the ER at Mercy West. I always called him my favorite and I will sure miss him. He absolutely loved to teach all of us in the ER. The last shift I worked with him he had me listen to a patients heart three times to tell him what I was hearing. Come to find out what I thought sounded like a murmur he wanted me to know it was the sound of a mechanical heart. I loved working with him as well as learning. The care and respect he gave every patient as he treated them was what I loved about him. I will truly miss him and know that Heaven has received one very well respected "young man". This is the term he would use on every person he saw. I will never forget his words...so tell me what's bothering you today young woman or man to everyone regardless of age. RIP dear friend.

Such a great man and a great friend. John taught ACLS for me at Firelands Hospital in Sandusky. I could always count on him to help me teach the difficult stations! Students loved to hear him lecture and always learned so much from him. Every 5 years I needed a doc to help me sort through the guideline changes. John always jumped in to help me and it was his expertise that made our program great. RIP my dear friend. I will miss you..but I look forward till we meet again.

Dear Kathy and family. I worked with John at Firelands Regional Medical Center in the ER. I so cherish the memories of working along side him and all the good times we had amidst the chaos. I remember the kindness and generosity that he and you shared and gave freely to the employees of the ER at the Christmas parties and throughout the years. We both shared the love of animals and I recall razzing for naming a female dog "Gus", lol. He was truly a remarkable physician and human being. I learned a great deal from him and will forever recall fond memories of the times we shared. It was a pleasure and an honor to have had the opportunity to work and know such a wonderful man. My prayers are with you and your family at the most devastating time. Your memories will ease your pain and fill the void in his absence. Sincerely, Lisa
