Richard D. Potvin, 67, of Auburn, passed away at home on February 19, 2017. He was born in Manchester on July 7, 1949, the son of Paul and Francoise (Gingras) Potvin. He was a 1967 graduate of Manchester High School West and was a member of the honor society and an all-star athlete. He was an Eagle Scout. He played baseball for Post 79 and went on to play in two American Legion World Series. After high school, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins but chose instead to attend the University of Rhode Island where he continued his baseball career. He was a physical education teacher with the Manchester School System for 44 years until his retirement. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Intervale Country Club where he was once club champion. He also played on the senior golf tour. In his retirement, he enjoyed landscaping, building rock gardens, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was particularly proud of watching his granddaughter Ella on stage, and teaching his grandson Jack how to play basketball. He and his wife enjoyed exploring the back-roads of NH, always on the lookout for hidden treasures. Family members include his wife of 43 years, Nancy (Stonner) Potvin; his mother Francoise Potvin of Manchester; two daughters, Shana Potvin and her husband Bill Vorias of Bedford and Corinne Potvin-Oriol and her husband Andre of Auburn; two grandchildren, Jack Vorias and Ella Weintraub; two brothers, Andre Potvin and his wife Dawn of Manchester and Marc Potvin and his wife Glynis Jordan of NC; two sisters, Monique Fonner and her husband Michael of Weare, and Suzanne Roy and her husband Paul of Manchester; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. A gathering will take place at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Ave, Manchester on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Palace Theatre, 80 Hanover St., Manchester, NH 03101. Mr. P. was my gym teacher during the 70's at Gossler Park School. I loved going to gym class because he was a great guy, a great teacher and he always made it fun. He was the first guy that I ever saw dunk a basketball. Rest in peace Mr. P. The world needs more great guys and great teachers like you!

My deepest sympathies to the Potvin family. Richie was a great teammate on the basketball team. Fun to be around. I always admired him as such a nice person and excellent student. RIP Richie.

February 23, 2017

To all of Richie's family I Send my deepest condolences. I have such fond memories of growing up in a home that included my siblings and right next door my dear cousins. Richie always had time for his pesky little cousin. He taught me how to field a ground ball and shoot a fade away, but more importantly he had a way of making me feel good about myself. I will never forget him. Lay off the curve ball old friend.

During lunch I used to get his grilled english muffin with jelly at Ernestos for him. This was when we were at the Rimmon School in the early 70's. What a wonderful teacher, always kind and friendly. I never forgot him. May he rest in Peace, my prayers go out for him and the family. God Bless Mr. Potvin, and God Bless the Potvin family.

Condolences to the entire Potvin Family. A great one has passed on. I just heard. I'm shaking right now. I don't want to write this.
Richie was the best combination of great athlete and great human being I ever played with. And I played with some greats. He was the absolute finest second baseman for Post 79. We were co-captains in 1967. His power, his range, his arm, his bat, his leadership - all were spectacular. How many games did he personally win in two years - ten? Maybe more. Potvin, DeGrandmaison, Andrews, Pstragowski, and MacRenaris - all major league talents. No wonder we won two consecutive Region I American Legion baseball championships.
In basketball, as West's star center, he brought his "A game" every time. Always scoring, rebounding, passing, playing great defense - knocking me down in "his paint" and not looking too unhappy about it either! He was a "competitor's comptetitor."
I could go on. The memories are still fresh. That smile. The intensity during the game. That desire to win in an honest and clean fashion. The never give up attitude.
Richie would say enough now. Wrap this up. We have a game to play. What's done is done. Let's get on with it. OK. But I know he will be very much missed because I know he lived his life just like he played ball - great!
Best to all that knew and loved him.

To the Potvin Family,

I played ball with Ritchie and went to the world series with him in South Carolina and Tennessee. Great times had by all. He always had a smile on his face and had anything bad to say about anyone. Ritchie was always so gracious. I will never forget him.

February 23, 2017

Mr. P as he was known by the students was a special teacher liked by both staff & students. Richie & I spent many years together teaching at Wilson School where for many of them we were the only male teachers and for some years the only males in the building. We both spent all or most of our teaching career there and had a special love for the students at Henry Wilson. I could share many a story of our days there from doing lunch duty, which became fun when working with Richie to coaching basketball .My favorite story is when he & I collaborated on a gym show using our basketball players doing drills to the music of the Harlem Globetrotters theme. For those who knew him, he will surely be missed . Rest in peace my friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with Richie's family and friends. This sad loss leaves everyone who shared time with him with a heavy heart. Although our paths crossed years ago, the opportunities I have had to compete against Richie and play with him on the baseball diamond take on a special meaning today. Always a gentleman, always a pleasure to be around. I pray in time fond memories will bring peace and a measure of comfort in your loss.

Please accept our heartful sympathy on the passing of a "great, great friend". Ritchie had charisma, laughter, and the willing to help others at any time. There are many things the family (and friends) will miss about Ritchie, but most of all his smile, and his kind consideration of others. When someone you love and care about, becomes a memory, the memory becomes a "Treasure". Rest in Peace. Respectfully, Larraine & Mike Lencki, Larry Parsons, & Pam Dube

My very deepest sympathy to you all. Words cannot express my feelings. Richie was as near a brother to as one can get. We grew up together. I've always felt blessed to have two families. I'm sure our merciful Lord will treat him with love and kindness. He is at rest.
