Dean Shaffer Obituary

Published by Doyle B. Shaffer, Inc Funeral Directors on Jun. 12, 2017.
Dean was born in Brooklyn on December 6, 1938. He lived in Jamaica Estates for 5 years before moving to Great Neck. He went to Lakeville School and Great Neck South High School. After graduating, he enlisted into the Coast Guard Reserve and served for 20 years. He received his Funeral Director's License from American McAllister Institute and joined the family owned Shaffer Funeral Home in Little Neck, N.Y. Dean met Joan at Zion Episcopal Church and were married there on September 9, 1961. He served on the Vestry of Zion Church and maintained the church records for many years. Dean joined the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Company #4 and served for over 58 years. During his time of service, Dean held the positions of Treasurer, Sergeant of Arms, Vice President and President. He was the most devoted husband to Joan, and father to baby Karen(deceased), Alison and Janine. A loving granddad to Lauren Joan, Dean Thomas and Cole Harrison. He always enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law Josh and Tom. They had many laughs together. Dean truly lived every day of his life for his family. He was also well loved by his family, friends and community. Dean gave selflessly to everyone who needed him and will be dearly missed. We should celebrate Dean's life and remember the special times we had with him. Death Leaves A Heartache No One Can Heal Love Leaves A Memory No One Can Steal

Joan, I lived next door to the Shaffer funeral and even worked as a teenager at the Funeral home when the undertaker was off and I would answer the phones. I even had a crush at 16 on Dean and he was was 19. He was so handsome. I remember the day he was going to a prom And he came over to the funeral home to see his dad before he went to the prom in his turquoise and white Chevy bellaire car. And in it was the most beautiful blonde girl who I later found it was his girlfriend Joan. What a beautiful couple. Over the years I have often thought about him and how he was and how many children they had. I later learn that Dennis his brother passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I live in Canada married to a Canadian but down in NY this week visiting my son and I thought of Dean and google his name and his obituary came up. So sorry for your lost.

Dean was a good friend to the Kavanagh family and a dedicated public servant. I enjoyed serving as a firefighter with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shaffer family.
