Rev. Vernon L. Macy age 91 of Hastings passed into the loving arms of God on August 3, 2017. Left with memories of Vern are his granddaughter Celeste, nephew John Lawrence Macy with family Bethany Macy, Jenny Valcore and Annabeth Macy. The John Forrest Macy family and niece Joann Elizabeth Macy, the Evaline Koutz Macy family, Hastings Baptist Church and Bibleville friends, Missionary friends near and far and dear friend Kendrew Mueller. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Woodlawn Meadows, Pennock Hospital and to Dr. Wildren and staff. Vern's life began with his mom 'Bess' praying that Vern would be a minister. His dad 'Lawrence' was a hardworking man but due to the depression, Vern was raised by his aunt and uncle, whom he called Dr. Dad and Dr. Mom. Vern attended church and accepted Jesus as his Savior at youth camp. Vern remembered his mom Bess' desire to be a priest, and gave his life to the Lord, not knowing what it all meant. Vern went on to attend Taylor University, became a minister and pastored churches in Honduras, Grand Rapids, Maple Hill, West Windsor, Charlotte and Housel Michigan. Vern mastered the Spanish language and was always excited to inform people that he was fluent in Spanish....even the Barry County Transit bus drivers! Vern met his first wife Veryl Pallas at Taylor and were married in 1948. Vern and Veryl adopted two children, Pamela Ann and Mark Lawrence. Vern had been attending the Baptist Seminary in Grand Rapids and began teaching at Woodbury, and Sunfield MI. Vern then graduated from Michigan State U with a degree in elementary education with emphasis in Science and Math., while at the same time filling the pulpit in many local churches. Vern's first wife Veryl passed away of cancer in 1985. Vern's sorrow continued in 1986 when his son Mark met a tragic death. Vern's daughter Pam had adopted a daughter Celeste and Vern doted on Celeste. Another tragic death saddened Vern's heart with the death of his daughter Pam. Vern retired after 38 years of pulpit ministry. He worked with members of the First Baptist Church of Hastings to rebuild camps in Alaska. Vern was gifted in music and sang with the 'Brothers of Joy'. Vern was lonely and the Lord led him to Evaline Koutz who was also lonely after the passing of her husband Rev. Leonard Koutz. Vern arrived like a barnstorm into her life. They were married in 1986. Vern and 'Evie' ministered in Honduras, Bibleville in Texas and enjoyed summers at Gull Lake. Evie passed away in 2015, and Vern was faithful to visit her in the care facility. God provided that Vern was able to also live at Woodlawn Meadows for the last several years, enjoying lunch dates with Evie before she passed away. Vern is rejoicing with the Lord now and would say to you as he always did instead of saying goodbye, 'God Bless'. 'Rejoice in the Lord evermore" 1 Thessalonians 4:16 Friends may call 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Hastings Baptist Church, 309 E. Woodlawn Ave., Hastings, MI 49058. Another visitation and luncheon will be held 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Funeral services will be officiated by Dr. Matt Moser 12:30 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2017. Interment will follow at Fuller Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Guideons International or Hastings Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care Richland Chapel. Personal messages for the family may be placed here at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.

Vern touched many lives including my family. As I have moved far away, I have tried to stay in touch with a few. Upon reading of Vernon's passing I see that Evie past away a couple years ago. She was a sweetheart and I appreciated her very much. Praising God that they are reunited again along with all those that went before him.

August 15, 2017

On August 7th, we were having dinner with our family for our 46th anniversary, when we got to reminiscing, and Vern's name came up. Our son googled it only to learn of Vern's passing only a handful of days before. Oh, my! In an instant memories were flooding my mind of a person whose example, testimony, discipling, generosity, friendship, and more, blessed me. And wishing I had taken the time to look him up for one more opportunity to tell him, "Thanks."
I first met Vern when I began attending West Windsor UB Church. Harold Cherry was trying to pastor Lansing and West Windsor until such time as WW was able to hire a full time pastor - Vern Macy. A few tidbits: I'd be at the piano for our hymns, and Vern would pick up his baritone and begin to play along. Times I spent at the parsonage, a safe place he and Veryl sensed I needed, though I told no one of the reality of my childhood. Bible Quiz Team - I loved it! Vern praying with me at Sebewa, as I dedicated my life to Jesus. I had a blind friend, Tom, and I'd go to Lansing to get him to take him with me to church. Vern would tell him what the Scripture was for Sunday so Tom could bring the appropriate volume of his Braille Bible; and then let Tom read the Scripture during worship. The primrose he gave us from his garden, and the delight my kids had watching it open up in the evening. The VW he and Veryl sold us (for less than its value) when we desperately needed a car and couldn't afford much. Letting me help with transportation when Veryl needed it and Vern was teaching at Washington Elem. in Charlotte. The sadness/joy when Veryl went to heaven. The joy when he found a new helpmate in Evie. Stories of Honduras and his love for those people. Telling me of CEF, and helping me be a "Summer Missionary" after graduating from high school. Their encouragement and blessing when I felt the need to leave WW for a church with a youth group that could better meet my needs as a young woman. These plus many more memories in between.
I was the only Christian in my family, and my youth was not easy, though I was never able to tell anyone because I didn't understand it, either. It was a different time, and some things simply were not discussed. Yet, I believe Vern and Veryl knew things were amiss, and along with others, continued to nurture me as a young believer. I have been a Christian over 50 years, and I will be forever indebted to them.
Vern loved serving Jesus Christ, and never quit serving. Even when Veryl's health began to keep her home-bound, they'd tell me that there was no retirement in serving Jesus; and though she couldn't do much, she could still pray! He has left along the way, many more people just like myself. I was glad he got to see in me some of the fruit of his labor: Regardless of my childhood, but in direct part of their impact on my life, I have had a Christian marriage, and we raised two kids who received God's grace and mercy. Both continue to follow Jesus; one is married and has 4 kids of her own who are indirectly part of the legacy Vern Macy leaves behind.
Please accept my condolences as you mourn his absence now from your lives. But, though I am saddened, I can't help but REJOICE knowing he is where he longed to be: in the presence of his beloved Savior. The pain of losing both Veryl and Evie, Mark and Pam, his aging body, is no longer.
There is a song, and the chorus goes something like this: "But, think of stepping on shore, and finding it heaven, of touching a hand and finding it God's; of breathing air, and finding it celestial; of waking up in Glory, and finding it home." Well done Vern, for you have been a good and faithful servant. May God bless all of you.

Vern will always be remember as a,ham radio friend WB8UNB,and above all a good Christian friend and neighbor. When we decided upgrade our license we spend many hour on the radio upgrading our code to 13 word per minute. We checked our words by sending bible verse each day. We spend many drives to Detroit before we finally pass the exam.
After Vern remarried we moved with my job so we never got to know his new family well only meeting them at the wedding who our prayers are now with them.

It. Is with the deepest sadness that I found out the passing of a wonderful man today. Mr Vern Macy, was not only my dads close friend, and a really cool neighbor, he was also one of the coolest fourth grade teachers I had the pleasure to have. I find it strange that this year of all years, the torch has has been passed to me, and I am now the fourth grade teacher. Heaven has just gotten another amaizing angel. I'll miss you mister Vern Macy.
I and my husband live and teach English at Clifford International School in China.
