Frederick Ledbetter Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Oct. 30, 2017.
Frederick (Fritz/Rick) Ledbetter passed away unexpectedly on October 30, 2017 at his home in San Antonio, TX. He was 65 and enjoyed a full, active life. He was a loving father and friend. Rick was born on February 28, 1952 in Anchorage in the Territory of Alaska to Mary Lou and Lionel Tietze. When he was 2 ½ his father died in an airplane accident and his mother remarried soon thereafter to Charles Ledbetter. Rick and his brother Norman were adopted by Charlie, taking his name and calling him Dad. Soon baby sister Priscilla arrived to complete the family, with Rick as the oldest of three. Rick spent his childhood in Anchorage, graduating from West High in 1970. He then attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where he made many lifelong friends. At Dartmouth he was a brother in Theta Delta Chi fraternity and was tapped to join the Sphinx Senior Society. After Dartmouth he earned a law degree at the University of New Mexico. Upon graduating Rick returned to Anchorage to practice law. There he met and married Rebecca Smith. They had two lovely children together- Andrew and Brooke. In 1990 the family moved to San Antonio. In San Antonio, Rick left the practice of law and worked in real estate management. Rick had many hobbies and interests. He loved music, live as well as recorded, and playing guitar on one of his many guitars. He enjoyed participating in and watching all types of sports, especially football and basketball. He was constantly reading and learning all that he could. He also greatly enjoyed his work at the Bexar County Assessor's office. Recent years and months have been among the happiest for Rick. Six weeks before his death he saw the birth of granddaughter Georgia to his daughter Brooke and her husband Luke Hugman. Just two days before his death he saw the marriage of his son Andrew to Julie Sotelo. For 2 ½ years before his death he had a strong, loving relationship with Belinda Charles with plans to marry. At the time of his death, life was very good for Rick. Rick is survived by his son Andrew (Julie Sotelo) of Austin; daughter Brooke (Luke) Hugman, granddaughter Georgia; mother Mary Lou Ledbetter of Mercer Island, WA; brother Norman (Catherine) of Seattle; sister Priscilla Padgett (Charles) of Mercer Island. He will be missed by many friends in Anchorage and San Antonio. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Friday, November 10, 2017 at Porter Loring Mortuary North. FUNERAL SERVICE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2017 12:00 P.M. PORTER LORING NORTH CHAPEL Father Leo Perez will officiate. Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park North. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

There wasn't a person who showed such care. He was Rick Ledbetter, my panel chair.

I was in Mrs Emerson's American Government class at West High in 1968. Fritz sat behind me. I recall that he was a very polite and respectful young man, very ambitious, and that his ambition was to attend an Ivy League School, which he did. I am a little surprised(and shocked), that he didn't stay in Anchorage & become a pillar of the community, and live well into his 90's. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I'm very sad to get the news on Fritz. We grew up in the same neighborhood in Anchorage. I got to know Fritz much better after high school and did some traveling with him. Always a guy who would make a BORING party much more fun!!

Fritz was a good friend, neighbor and fellow classmate at West Anchorage High School. I still live down the street from your old house in Turnagain. We had fun times back then, and I was looking forward to our next class reunion to catch up again. Your life has been an amazing journey. I remember Fritz from high school as genuine, personable and as a good friend. Though we lost touch with each other as we moved on, he clearly never lost touch with those admirable qualities. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

I met Rick at the Bexar County Appraisal Review Board five years ago but got to serve on his panel only once. He knew I was a writer and was interested in projects I was working on. He was very supportive, too, and a couple of times gave me books as a present, saying "I was thinking about you." We had been talking about the research I was doing on the Apache leader Geronimo, and he got me books with a Western theme. He was a good listener, too, plus a very kind and generous man. I remember one time I told him I was a little nervous at being a panel chair for the first time, and he was very encouraging, telling me that I had nothing to worry about because he believed I had what it took to be a good chairman. This was to be his last year on the board as it is mine. My condolences to his loved ones.

It is most sweet to know that Fritz lived his adult life as he did as a kid. I will always remember how humble and kind he was in school. West Anchorage High was a better place because of him. He was as genuine as they come. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and loved ones. A light went out with his passing. God speed Fritz.❤

I already knew I would miss Rick. He was my panel chair all summer and this was to be his last year.
Rick brought a legal eye to the proceedings. He was level headed and always fair. I loved his sense of humor.
I always thought I would see him at a concert or something, since our taste in music was similar. But summer is over now. I will miss him.

Rick was a remarkable man with a wonderful family. My condolences to Mary Lou, Norman & Catherine; Priscilla & Charles; Andrew & Julie; Brooke & Luke and Georgia. 'Fritz' was an equally remarkable friend from our school years - we enjoyed playing music, singing, and our time together as members of our debate team. His humor and good nature were among his many gifts to the rest of us. There are people in each of our lives who, at different turns, leave an indelible mark. He was one of the very best. Though we'd not seen each other for a long time, I considered him a life-long friend; and, I will not be surprised when we meet along up the trail.
