Sharon M. Keegan

Sharon Margaret (Smichenko) Keegan, 59, beloved wife of Kevin Charles Keegan, passed away peacefully at home in Manchester, CT on Thursday, June 7, 2018. Sharon was born in Hartford to Ruth (O’Connell) Smichenko of Vernon and the late Peter Smichenko on September 17, 1958. Sharon graduated from East Catholic High School and Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, CT. She went on to receive a Masters of Science at Central Connecticut University, and an Advanced Study/Administrator Certification from Sacred Heart University. Sharon also participated in and completed the PIMMS fellowship, a highly-selective program offered through Wesleyan University that was designed to improve the teaching of math and science. Sharon’s passion was making a difference in education spanning innovative special education programs, math programs and the establishment of curriculums. In her 38 years of education, she was a Special Education teacher in East Hartford, a special education and math teacher in Manchester, a Secondary Math Curriculum Specialist and Director of Mathematics at CREC Magnet Schools in Hartford and most recently served as the K through 12 Math Curriculum Specialist for the Town of South Windsor. She was also an Adjunct Professor for the MAT Graduate Program at Quinnipiac University. Besides her husband Kevin, and her mother Ruth, Sharon is survived by her son Timothy James Collins III, his wife Ayumi Collins and their daughter Emma Elizabeth Collins of Palmetto, Florida. She is also survived by her sisters, Susan Smith and her husband David of South Windsor, CT, Sandi Booma and her husband David of Ellington, CT, her brother Peter Smichenko and his wife Susan of Belmont, MA; her step daughter Kimberly Keegan of Newington, CT, her step son Matthew Keegan of Cromwell, CT and several nieces and nephews. Her family will receive friends for calling hours on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 4pm to 7pm at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Sharon on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Luke Church, 141 Maple Street, Ellington, CT. Burial will following Ellington Center Cemetery.
